Homemade Sugar-Free Apple Pie Filling – Akram’s Ideas Ep. 2-26

Not in the slightest. In fact, youd never know that this was a vegan apple pie, nor a gluten free apple pie.

Ive actually been making this particular recipe since high school , and its one that I always come back to.

I promise that none of your guests, nor you, will know that this healthy apple pie is indeed vegan and gluten free .

Its all in the easy apple pie filling. Not to mention, the crust is so flaky, no one will know this apple pie is vegan.

Tips On How To Make And Serve Sugar Free Apple Pie

  • Keep your pie crust ingredients cold. Never allow your pie crust ingredients to heat up, that especially is true for the butter. Overmixing can add unwanted heat to the crust.
  • Make sure the filling is completely cool before filling the bottom crust. Not only is it better for the crust as discussed above, but allowing the sugar-free apple pie filling to cool will enable it to thicken entirely.
  • Add a sprinkling of cheese before baking. Cheddar cheese goes great with apple pie. Try it out by spreading a handful of shredded cheddar to the top of the crust for the last five minutes of baking.

What Type Of Crust To Use

I like to use an almond flour crust. I also dont prefer a double crust pie. I know, I may be alone in that! I love a crumble topping, similar to a Dutch apple pie. Its EASIER! The process is a lot simpler and theres less pressure to make the pie look perfect on the top.

Typically, a Dutch topping is streusel and made of butter, flour, and sugar baked on top. I use almond flour, rolled oats, cinnamon, sweetener, and butter.

How To Make A Lattice Crust

Now, for this easy apple pie recipe, you do not indeed need to make a lattice crust to go with it.

Of course, I find them to be fun, but I find all baking challenges to be fun! Sometimes, you just want a really straight forward apple pie, and trust me, that will still an amazing apple pie because its all in the filling.

In that case, just place the second rolled out pie dough crust over the apples in the pie dish, make a few slits , and youre good!

So you have your first pie dough in the pie dish, and you have your sliced apples coated in their spices sitting in the dish. Now its time for you to get your lattice crust ready!

Here are my basic steps for making a lattice crust:

  • Start by rolling the dough out to about 12 inches in diameter.
  • Next, slice 12 strips, each 1-inch thick. Youll then have 6 strips for each direction. I recommend using a ruler and a pizza slicer here.
  • Place the first 6 strips in one direction onto the pie, but do not seal anything off. Youll be lifting these strips up again and again until your lattice is made!
  • Now for the weaving. Fold back 3 strips, alternating which you fold back .
  • Place one of the unused pie dough strips over the non-folded pie dough strips.
  • Fold back the folded pie dough strips to go over this new strip.
  • Now fold back the opposite 3 pie dough strips, and place another strip over the unfolded strips. Repeat the same process that you did for the previous strips.

    This pie was super easy to put together, once the apples were peeled. Honestly, to peel an apple by hand is a test of true patience and raw talent! If you can walk away without blood oozing from scraped or cut fingersor worse, then you did great!

    Really, we need to get one of those handy dandy, apple peelers that look like some sort of torture device. But they look like they work. Add to our Christmas wish list!

    The pie crust is another hurdle depending on the route you take. You can make your own pie crust or buy store bought. Guess which one we did? Yep, we went the store bought route!

    Honest, yall, Life gets so busy sometimes and we run out of steam before we even got started. Now, Tanya admits she isnt the best at pie crust , but baking pies will give us both lots of practice.

    As you can see from the picture below, even with the store bought pie crust, we need practice. Tanya got the top crust a tad thin.

It appears that it is easier to make a low carb or Diabetic-friendly pie crust than it is to buy.     How Many Carbs In Sugar

    Are you ready for this? This sugar-free apple pie has just 8 grams of net carbs per slice!

    Yes, thats a little higher than some other low carb desserts, but to be able to enjoy apple pie on a keto diet, I think its well worth making room in your carb allowance.

    TIP: The nutrition info is if you cut the pie into 12 pieces, which are quite filling thanks to the almond flour crust. If you prefer to cut carbs more, you can cut it into 16 pieces instead.

    You may know by now that apples aren’t very keto friendly. They are relatively high in sugar without much fiber for 100 grams of apple, there are 11.41 grams of net carbohydrates. That means most keto dieters aren’t able to enjoy apples or any of the usual treats made with them.

    As mentioned above, you can use Splenda Stevia in baking BUT it is advisable to use some sugar in the mix otherwise your baked goods wont brown and the texture will be way off.

    Sugar Free Apple Pie Filling Canning Recipe. Add the apple slices and stir to. Add the lemon juice to the sugar mixture and bring to a boil for 1 minute.

    After youve peeled and cored your apples, put the slices into a large, stainless steel pot with an inch or two of water and simmer with the lid on for 10 minutes. Applesauce, jellies, and butters, oh my!

    I should point out that this recipe does contain coconut sugar. When I say sugar-free what I mean is refined sugar-free.

    We can probably all agree that refined white sugar is not a health food, and I do my best to avoid it as much as possible. It can be argued that coconut sugar is still sugar, but I prefer it over regular cane sugar for several reasons.
