How Long Does It Take To Make

Coconut Custard Pie

The foundation paste took me about 10 minutes to make, and then it rests in the fridge for about 15 minutes.

Once it rested, you roll it out , line the pie pan and make some sort of decorative edge.

In Ranhofers words, you raise up the edges, pinch all around, and leave stand in a cool place for twenty minutes in a cool place.

While the dough was standing in a cool place , I mixed up the custard, which literally took maybe 5 minutes.

I let it sit until the 20 minutes were up , spread a thick layer of desiccated coconut on the bottom, and then slowly strained the custard into it.

It baked about 45 minutes at 350F, and then it took awhile to cool. But I think serving it warmnot hotis an excellent plan.

So, from start to finish without breaks , plan on about 1 1/2-2 hours from no dough to pie out of the oven. Then add on cooling time.

Peace And Universal Health

Manhattan: With Thanksgiving and the holidays coming up, I hope that we can have peace in the world I hope that we can as a country and world. Learn to put our differences aside, and get along. I pray that we can all get along. I also hope that we can have health and that our rights will not be taken away. Finally I pray that one day, there will be universal health insurance for all. Thanksgiving: A Universal Holiday

Entenmann

Fresh Meadows: Of all major holidays, Thanksgiving Day has the least potential for being irksome, guilty of identity protectionism or driven by balkanized loyalties and passions. It’s the most inclusive of holidays. It’s not ideology-based and harbors no invidious implied comparisons with other nations, faiths or ways of life.

It has no agenda. It is universal in appeal and relevancy. It is, in the broadest and deepest way, a “one-size fits all” dignified celebration. A sense of gratitude has at least fleetingly passed though every person’s heart, and so the holiday has status and credibility with all spiritual traditions and for those independent of any.

Thanksgiving Day is unique. And it is for everyone.

New Years Day, Valentine’s Day, Mother’s and Father’s Day, Memorial Day, Veterans Day, Independence Day Labor Day are all worthy but not for all. Nor are the numerous religious holidays that are dear to adherents and convenient to motorists when alternate side of the street parking is suspended for their observance, but all theologies lend themselves to divisiveness. The same for holidays that innocently glorify different ethnicities and national origins.

The only holiday that ranks with Thanksgiving as an inspiration, were we had better be immersed in the lessons derived from it, is Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Choose A Sweetness Level

Traditional Coconut Custard Pie is very sweet. Most recipes call for a full cup of sugar. The pie from the cider mill was much less sweet, so my tastebuds expect less sugar.

I like my pie lightly-sweetened with 1/2 cup of sugar . Its just enough for me. If you like a sweeter pie, 3/4 cups of sugar is a nice step up, without being cloyingly sweet. If you love a very sweet pie, go for it with the full cup!

    Coconut Custard Pie

DOES COCONUT CUSTARD PIE HAVE TO BE REFRIGERATED. Coconut Custard pie is best when you keep it in the fridge after baking. It is fine to allow it to sit out for 2 hours once it has come to room temperature. After that time, you will want to cover it with plastic wrap or aluminum foil and place it in the refrigerator.

    A Note About Measurements

NOTE: Most of my recipes are written by weight and not volume, even the liquids.Even though I try to provide you with volume measurements as well, I encourage you to buy a kitchen scale for ease of measuring, accuracy, and consistency.

This is the scale I use, love, and recommend. If youre unsure, please read my post about how to use a food scale.

Serving And Storing Homemade Coconut Custard Pie

My family likes to top chilled slices of the coconut pie with lightly-sweetened whipped cream and extra toasted coconut flakes. The filling is creamy and soft, so we love the contrast of the crunchy toasted coconut on top of the whipped cream.

Ive read several accounts of people serving Coconut Custard Pie slightly warm, with a scoop vanilla ice cream. Personally, Ive never tried it and cant attest to it. Weve always eaten the pie chilled, but if you serve it with ice cream, let me know!

Can I Really Make This Pie Based On The Directions In The Photos

Coconut Cream Pie Flavored Coffee by Entenmann

This crust is so old-school there isnt even a bowl to make it in!

Yes, you really can. I did.

You will probably want to read the rules through a couple of times. And note that everything is expressed in weights, so you will need an accurate kitchen scale . You will also have to trust the feel, especially of the dough.

I ended up only using about 3/4 of the flour and maybe half the water, and it worked out perfectly.

But, if you are not really familiar with making pie crust, you may be better off using a recipe that is written out conventionally and has been exhaustively tested, just to make sure you are successful.

I recommend my friend and pie guru Kate McDermotts book, Art of the Pie. You will find truly foolproof recipes for pie crust between those covers.

For an online recipe, my friend Beth has a great tutorial all about the ins and outs of making pie crust.

When Is Coconut Custard Pie Done

The pie is ready to leave the oven when the top looks puffed and golden, and the tip of a knife inserted into the center comes out clean. I say nearly because youll often get a bit of coconut clinging to the knife.

As long as youve cooked it 45-50 minutes, the center of the pie is set, and the knife isnt coated in custard, its done.

Coconut Cream Pie Vs Coconut Custard Pie

Despite sounding similar, Coconut Custard Pie and Coconut Cream Pie are totally different desserts . The biggest difference is that Custard Pie has a baked filling, and Cream Pie does not.

Coconut Custard Pie is made with an egg and milk/cream custard that sets up and thickens in the oven. Coconut Cream Pie is a custard, but its cooked on the stove and chilled until set. Its then topped with a layer of whipped cream.

The texture of Custard Pie isnt as creamy as Cream Pie, and is typically more compact. For a visual , I could eat the filling for Cream Pie on its own in a bowl, with a spoon, but not Custard Pie filling.

Does Coconut Custard Pie Need To Be Refrigerated

Vegan Coconut Custard Pie || Gretchen’s Bakery

Yes. This is a dairy-based pie and needs to be stored in the refrigerator, after its cooled to room temperature. I like to cover it with plastic wrap before storing for up to two days.

Enjoy this pie with a wine pairing! Hugh Preece, Sommelier and Italian Wine Ambassador Vinitaly Academy, suggests enjoying:

Golden yellow color, aromas of exotic fruit, citrus fruits, vanilla and almond, in the mouth it is very subtle, pervasive, very persistent and a final slightly bitter note, typical characteristic of Garganega.

Whats So Great About This Recipe

This recipe has definitely stood the test of time. By that, I mean it originally was published in a cookbook, The Epicurean, written in 1893. It doesnt get much more traditional than that!

    Other things to love:

    • The ingredient list is short
    • The mixing method is straightforward
    • The hint of lemon brings a bit of zing to an otherwise mellow pie (and yes, you can use lime if youd rather
