Peach Cobbler Recipe: Old Fashioned & Homemade with A Buttery Pie Crust Recipe

Because peach season varies depending on which area of the country youre in, you may need to use frozen peaches when the cobbler craving hits. From mid-May to mid-September, you should be able to find fresh peaches in the grocery store. If not, go with frozen. Not only are frozen peaches available year-round, they are available peeled, so thats one step you can skip.

The only disadvantage I find when I use frozen peaches is that theyre not as peachy-flavored as fresh. I also dont like having to thaw and drain them before mixing them into the cornstarch-sugar mixture. Two smallish details, but both motivate me to use fresh.

When it comes to using frozen fruits in desserts that should have a thick syrup, you need to do one of two things: thaw and drain the fruit of any excess water or add more cornstarch to compensate for the extra water the frozen fruit will release during baking. Usually, 2 additional tablespoons of cornstarch will cut it.

How To Make Old Fashioned Peach Cobbler

Old fashioned peach cobbler is really simple to make and should not feel intimating. As I walk you through the steps from beginning to end, you’ll see just how easy it is. You’ll want to incorporate this recipe into your Fall and holiday baking.

Pie dough: Roll out your pie dough . Store bought pie crust is great… no judgement here. I use it all the time especially when I’m pressed for time. My favorite at the moment is Trader Joe’s pie crust rolls which I roll out to fit whichever shaped baking dish I’m using.

Filling: In a large pot, combine canned peaches, maple syrup, cinnamon, allspice, and cardamom. Add a tablespoon of flour to the filling to thicken the mixture as it boils gently.

Assembly: Add one pie dough to the bottom and up the sides of your casserole or baking dish and bake it in the oven just until it turns a light brown color . Remove from the oven and add the peach cobbler filling. Add the 2nd pie dough on top of the filling and brush the top of the pie dough with an egg wash. Cut a few slits in the dough and bake.

Bake: Bake in a 375 degree oven until the filling starts to bubble and the pie crust is a beautiful golden brown color. Remove the cobbler from the oven and allow to cool.

Serve: Enjoy by itself or top with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.

When is peach season? Peach season starts in May and goes until September. This when you will typically see peaches in the grocery store. Georgia peach season starts in May and those are by far my favorite peaches.

Making The Peach Cobbler Filling

Outside of fresh peach season, you can use frozen peaches for this recipe. Once you bring the frozen peaches to a boil, reduce the heat to low, let them simmer for 10 minutes, and then cool the filling.

The Best Peaches To Use For Peach Pie

Fresh peaches are best for peach pie, though you can get away with unsweetened frozen peaches. If using frozen peaches, thaw, chop, and blot them dry before using. Canned peaches are not ideal as theyre already too soft and mushy.

The best fresh peaches for peach pie are slightly firm with zero bruises or soft spots. Your best bet is to purchase or pick about 9-10 firm peaches, then let them sit in a paper bag for 1-2 days to ripen. Some may have soft spots after this time, so that is why I suggest buying a couple more than you will actually need. Eat the others or add them to a smoothie. We use a quart jar of our home canned peaches, but commercial canned peaches will work, too.

If you don’t have canned peaches, it fine to substitute fresh peaches or frozen peaches. Bring frozen peaches to room temperature before baking, or your peach cobbler will take much longer to bake.

Don’t skip tossing your sliced peaches with sugar in step one of the recipe. The sugar binds to the juice coming out of the fruit to make the sauce.

As the peaches sit with sugar on them, more juice will come out, even after they’ve been drained. Go ahead and scoop the fruit, sugar, and juice mix right on top of your batter.

If your cobbler is still soupy, add a tablespoon of cornstarch to the sugar before mixing the next time around.
