Kermits Key West Key Lime Pie Shoppe

Kermits is a great spot for coffee or breakfast before heading out on a boat excursion. However, in addition to the cafe they also have a key lime pie shop featuring traditional, mango, strawberry, and my favorite, the chocolate-dipped key lime pie on a stick.

You will see frozen, chocolate covered key lime pie all throughout the Keys, but Kermits is one of the best. Their key lime pie is creamy and the chocolate is not too thick, making it easy to eat before it melts. By the way, the mango key lime pie isnt too shabby either!

Old Town Bakery, Key West

Located in Old Town, a little off-the-beaten path for those wandering Duval Street, you will find the cute, local Old Town Bakery. They offer coffee, pastries, breads, and a unique flavor to their key lime pie. Instead of the traditional graham cracker crust, they use a crushed gingersnap crust. The pie itself is nicely limey and tart, and it is also quite creamy.

If key lime pie isnt your thing, they also have a delicious brownie with a chocolate ganache center. Just be forewarned that it is big enough to share.

Burdines, Marathon

There are two places in Marathon famous for their fried key lime pie Burdines and Island Fish Company. I ate at Island Fish Company on my prior trip to the Florida Keys, so this time I tried Burdines.

Chocolate Covered Key Lime Pie On A Stick In Key West Florida

Yes frozen key line pie. A thousand times this. I went to Key West a couple years back. The frozen one was probably the best, out of the 10ish ones we tried.

There’s a key lime pie shop in Red Hook, Brooklyn that makes something similar called The Swingle . This prompted me to check up on how they were doing, especially after the neighborhood was hit hard by Hurricane Sandy a few years back, and apparently they’ve got some beef with what I can only assume is the shop that OP was at. Their website

Ah, the Swingle, our famous 4-inch key lime tart, hand-dipped in a rich Belgian dark chocolate. This is the real deal people, and listen-up, not all chocolate-dipped key lime treats are created equal. We noticed recently that one of the more popular key lime shops in Key West uses a different recipe for his chocolate-dipped slices. When we made an inquiry, we got an oddly worded reply.

Yes, the pies used to make our pie bars are made differently than our traditional key lime pie because egg yolks tend to get a gummy consistency when they are eaten while still frozen

Kermits Key Lime Shoppe

Now we are going to get into a couple less traditional pies, starting with Kermits chocolate covered key lime pie on a stick.

This is a really fun spin on a classic that I definitely recommend trying. We purchased our chocolate covered key lime pies and walked them a short ways down to Mallory Square to catch the sunset. Just a warning if you walk with your pie, be sure to bring napkins for when it starts to melt!

I had high standards for Kermits key lime pie, having both read about it and heard good reviews from locals. It did live up to the hype for the most part. The curd was nice and tart, and the thin layer of chocolate was easy to bite through.

The only negatives were that the crust, while crunchy, didnt have much flavor. Aaron also felt like the chocolate overpowered the lime, though I didnt share this sentiment.

Price: $4.50/slice

Key Lime Pie With Whipped Cream

Next up, I had to sample a slice of pie with whipped cream, which proved to be quite easy seeing as most restaurants serve their pies with whipped cream rather than meringue. I got my first taste of this at The Stoned Crab at Ibis Bay Resort, where they wowed me with both their seafood and their pie.

I really liked having the whipped cream on the pie because it was a nice way to balance the tartness of the lime. This pie also came with a chocolate and lime glaze, which I really liked. I noticed a lot of places liked to serve their pies plain so that the flavour could come through, but I thought the chocolate and lime were a nice compliment.

Chocolate Dipped Key Lime Pie : Just Add Sprinkles

Have you ever heard of chocolate covered key lime pie? We hadnt either until we were on our Caribbean cruise last year. We had three ports of call and Key West was our final stop. I am a planner and I had researched each port we stopped at prior to leaving for our cruise, and I read that you cant go to Key West without getting a slice of chocolate covered key lime pie. My husband and I love key lime pie, so we knew this would be a must.

First I have to say that Key West is awesome! We went on the cruise with four other couples and had a blast, but Key West was definitely the best stop. Our favorite picture of us from the trip was right before we went on a two hour jet ski tour. I also was still blonde back then. Im thinking of switching back. Anyway, back on track After our jet ski tour, we found the shop that everyone was talking about.

The tourist sites were not lying when they said this chocolate confection was amazing. It was all I could do to get my husband to share with me! I miss that trip and someday I hope that we will go back. In the meantime, I decided that we could relive at least a part of that day by making these delicious treats at home.

This is an excellent alternative to your traditional chocolate dipped strawberries for Valentines day. I hope you enjoy!

Frozen Key Lime Pie On A Stick

While I was growing up, my dad always believed in taking our family on vacations somewhere to culture us kids. We certainly were hard to please. My brother slept at the symphony, while I ate it up. Most of us couldn’t get enough of New York , but my brother detests crowds. One place we can all agree on is Key West, Florida. My dad, ever the adventurous one, tried out wind surfing while my mom and I graciously accepted cool towels during sun bathing on the beach. We all met up for Key lime pie every night. On a particularly muggy day in Florida, frozen Key lime pie is the way to go. But dipped in chocolate and put on a stick? Well, that’s great for any day.

  • To Make the Crust: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F, and have a 6-inch pie pan ready.
  • In a small bowl, combine the graham cracker crumbs, sugar, and melted butter. Stir until evenly moist. Press the crumbs into the pie pan, taking care to pack it tightly and up the sides of the pan. Bake on a sheet pan for 10 minutes, then let cool.
  • To Make the Lime Curd Filling: In a medium-size bowl, using an electric mixer on medium speed, beat the egg yolks and condensed milk until light and airy, about 3 minutes. The mixture will be pale in color, and slightly foamy. Next, add the lime zest and Key lime juice and beat until combined. Pour into the piecrust, and freeze overnight.
  • A Quest To Find The Best Key Lime Pie In Key West

On my recent Florida Keys road trip, I was on a mission to find the best key lime pie in Key West . It is great to have an excuse to eat as much dessert as you want on girls trip after all, it is for research right? The truth is, not all key lime pie is created equal and you will find it fried, frozen, dipped, and more. It takes some real serious research to find the best.

On our way from Key Largo to Key West we sampled everything with key lime flavor: key lime donuts, key lime muffins, key lime ice cream, key lime cocktails, key lime chocolates, and lots and lots of key lime pie. Here are the ones that really stood out.

Our cruise ship stopped in Key West for an entire day so my traveling companion made it our goal, in this port, to visit Kermit’s Key Lime Shoppe. She had learned about it on the Travel Channel. The cruise ship port is located several blocks from the pie shop but this was easily walk-able for the two of us. It was about a 10 minute walk. One nice thing about the shop is that you can sample many of the items before you purchase them. They have a large variety of key lime flavored foods from sauces, nuts, candies and oil to key lime pie, of course. There were even key lime dog biscuits which we did not try:) We enjoyed a slice of chocolate dipped key lime pie while sitting in their outdoor garden area with Koi pond. The pie was fantastic with the sweetness of the chocolate offsetting the sourness of the lime. Yummy! The last thing a cruise ship passenger needs is another dessert but a trip to this shop was fun and you might even find some edible souvenirs.

Key Lime Pie: The Best Dessert In The Florida Keys

Confession time: during my recent visit to the Florida Keys I ate Key Lime Pie for breakfast, lunch and dinner every single day. Id like to tell you that this was strictly for research purposes as I embarked on a quest to find the best Key Lime Pie in the Keys, but lets be honest, I just like to eat pie and when its listed on every single menu, it only makes it that much easier for me to indulge in a little sweet somethin somethin.

I may not have been able to narrow the search down to the best pie , however, I did end up discovering a whole lot of unique variations of the dessert.

Frozen Chocolate Covered Key Lime Pie Pop

    Ingredients:

    • 14 oz. cans Nestle Carnation Sweetened Condensed Milk
    • 1 cup Key Lime Juice
    • 2 whole Eggs
    • 10 pre-made Graham Cracker Pie Shell
    • bars Lindt 70% Cocoa Smooth Dark Chocolate Bars

    Directions:

  • Combine sweetened condensed milk, lime juice and eggs in a large bowl and whist until well blended.
  • Place pie shell on a cookie sheet.
  • Pour filling into pie shell.
  • Bake at 325 degrees Fahrenheit for 18-20 minutes.
  • After your pie is cooked, instead of cooling it in the fridge like a normal Key Lime Pie, go ahead and put it in the freezer for a few hours. It doesn’t need to be frozen solid, but it helps if it is a little more firm then if it was just refrigerated.
  • Cut the pie into slices and place on a foil lined plate.
  • Place a popsicle stick or paper straw into the pie slice.
  • Melt chocolate.
  • Pour melted chocolate over pie slices OR dip pie slices into melted chocolate.
  • Place in freezer overnight or until frozen solid.
  • You can watch the video:

This dessert does take a little bit of wait time, but it is well worth the wait! This dessert is tasty, yummy and the bitter chocolate perfectly offsets the tangy and sweet pie. It is the perfect combination and a delicious and scrumptious treat!

    Key Lime Pie With Meringue

I got my first taste of Key Lime Pie while having breakfast at Blue Heaven. This restaurant is an institution in Key West over the course of its history the property has hosted cock fights, gambling, and even Friday night boxing matches refereed by the one and only, Ernest Hemingway. How could I say no to that?

Even though I went to Blue Heaven for breakfast , I still saved a little bit of room for pie because thats what you do when youre in the Key Lime Pie capital.

When my slice of pie arrived at the table, I couldnt believe the height of the meringue it was practically the size of my face! The meringue was a nice golden brown on the outside, and white and fluffy once you cut into it. The pie had the perfect balance of tartness and sweetness, and because Lemon Meringue Pie is my favourite, the similarities between the two immediately won me over.

    Key Lime Pie Combinations

Chocolate Dipped Key Lime Pie : Just Add Sprinkles

And then I discovered this book: The Key West Key Lime Pie Cookbook, which supposedly has a whopping 150,000 different Key Lime Pie combinations. Yes, thats more Key Lime Pie than anyone could ever consume in a lifetime! So if deep-fried pie, pie on a stick, and pie in a glass dont sound to your taste, theres likely to be at least one recipe to your liking in here.

Also, I should mention that while Key Lime is really popular around the Florida Keys, you can sample a lot more than just pie. Other popular items include Key Lime cocktails, Key Lime cookies, Key Lime cupcakes, Key Lime barbecue sauce, Key Lime candy and the list goes on and on.

As for me, Ill be taking a break from Key Lime Pie for a while. I may have a sweet tooth, but after eating pie thrice a day for, Im kind of in the mood for something savoury.

Have you ever tried Key Lime Pie before? Whats your favourite variation of this dessert?

Many thanks to The Florida Keys and Key West for hosting me during my visit. For more travel inspiration have a look at their , and accounts.
