    How Do You Clean It

To make cleanup a breeze, I recommend using a scrubber set made for cast iron cookware. Just make certain you allow your pie irons to cool thoroughly before attempting to clean. Just fill your sink or camp wash basin with hot water and allow your pie iron to soak to loosen any stuck-on food, charcoal and ash.

After about 10-15 minutes, use your scrubber set to scrub off any remnants and grime. Finally, give them a good rinse with hot water. Finally, rub a little shortening inside your cast iron pie iron halves to preserve and keep them from rusting.

And, to help make cleanup even easier, you can use parchment paper instead of using nonstick spray.

    Classic Bread Stuffing Recipe

Toasted cheese sandwiches are always great, but theyre extra special when you make them over a campfireand a pie iron is the right tool for the job. No mere campfire-cooking gimmick, these hinged cast-iron cookers actually turn out terrific sandwiches. To use a pie iron, simply lay a slice of buttered bread, butter side down, on one half of the iron. Add savory or sweet fillingscheese, cured meats, jam, fruit, chocolate, etc.top with a second slice of buttered bread, butter side up. Close the iron and cook for a couple minutes over a hot fire.

The models shown here are manufactured by Rome Industries, which makes pie irons in several other shapes as well.

    Round jaffle iron

This model crimps the bread and seals the fillings inside a crisp, buttery toast pocket. White sandwich bread is ideal for round jaffles, but feel free to experiment with other kinds. You can also cook cornbread batter or biscuit dough in the pie iron.

    Panini iron

This design doesnt crimp the bread in classic jaffle fashion instead, it compresses the sandwich as it toasts. For panini, artisan bread works best.

How Do I Season A Pie Iron

If you plan on buying the aluminum pie iron or an aluminum pie iron with a non-stick coating, no seasoning is necessary. Before you use it for the first time wash it thoroughly a couple times with soap and hot water.

A cast iron pie iron, like a cast iron skillet or Dutch oven needs to be seasoned before you use it.

After removing the pie iron from the packaging youll find a thin film of paraffin wax, this is applied by the manufacturer to prevent rusting during shipping. You can remove the wax by scrubbing it with soap and warm water or by heating the metal cooking plates over a charcoal grill or campfire.

I held mine over the campfire for approximately 10 minutes to melt and burn off the wax coating. Then while it was still warm, I washed it in warm soapy water using a soft bristled vegetable brush to clean and remove any remaining residue.

After washing, I dried the pie iron and applied a thin coat of solid shortening . Then I held it back over the campfire until it began to smoke, flipping to get a even coating.

When cool enough I wiped it clean and repeated the process a total of four times to get a good coating. Just like any cast iron pan the more you use it the more seasoned it will get.

How Do I Use A Pie Iron

Pie irons are a favorite way to cook whether youre roughin it in the great outdoors or just relaxing in the backyard.

It couldnt be any easier, open the pie iron and spray the inside of each plate with cooking spray. Butter one side of two slices of bread. Then lay one slice butter side down in the bottom half of the pie iron and press down to form an indentation.

Now add your favorite ingredients, then place the second piece of bread on top with butter side up, close the two halves and lock it closed, and then hold it over a bed of hot coals, after a few minutes flip it over to cook the other side.

The hardest part of the whole process is figuring out when your food is done. Every campfire is different and your food will cook a little different each time. You probably wont get it perfect the first time, however with a little practice youll quickly get the knack for how long it takes.

You dont want your meal burnt and over done, so open the pie iron and check to see how the outside layer is browning. If its not brown enough, close it back up and continue to cook until you get a golden brown outer layer and a bubbling hot center.

When everything is cooked to perfection, simply unhook the latch and drop your meal onto a plate, if it doesnt pop out use a metal fork or knife to loosen it. Food cooked in a pie iron is extremely hot, so allow it to cool a bit before eating. I know Ive burned the roof of my mouth more than once, enough said on that!

    Our Pie Iron Buying Guide

Food experts call the pie iron an underrated camping tool. It boasts a simple design: just two square or similarly-shaped cast iron or aluminum pans mounted onto fireproof rods. The pans are then joined together with a hinge, and presto! It becomes a miniature oven.

Midwestern campers love this product. Pie irons are great for making sealed-edge sandwiches, omelets, mini-pies and many other delightful treats when youre enjoying the great outdoors.

Pie irons are made to use over open flames like campfires. Most are constructed from cast iron, which is durable and can stand up to high temperatures. Aluminum pie irons do not stand up to heat as well but are not as heavy to hold. These outdoor cooking tools have long handles to keep chefs safe from the heat, with grips on the ends.

The best part about pie irons is that the concave plates envelop their contents, which allows the food to get cooked on all sides. The edges crimp the crust and seal all the good fillings inside. The cooked food resembles an empanada or a little pie. Delicious!
