Made from cast iron, this is an incredibly sturdy pan that will hold up to decades of use. The pan came pre-seasoned, so it was ready to use right away. Still, I had space in the oven and a little time, so I gave it a quick extra seasoning in the oven. Every time I used it and cleaned it, I gave it a light coating of oil. While I didnt cook greasy foods in the pan, pie crusts have oil in them that will continue seasoning the pan as its used.

While I’ve made plenty of pies, I had never made one in a cast iron pan. I’ve used ceramic, glass, heavy-duty aluminum, and stainless steel pans, and even disposable aluminum pans, but until now, I’d never considered cast iron. Now that I have, it makes perfect sense. It holds heat well, it heats evenly, and it promotes browning. Its also nonstick, so slices of pie wont fight to stay in the pan.

The consistent heat enhances different flavors, also allowing for better searing and browning. My Overall Thoughts On The Lodge Cast Iron Pie Pan

My favorite part about any pie is the flaky crust, so this was a huge bonus for me. I suppose I could have been using one of my many cast iron skillets all along, but I like that now I have a dedicated piece for pies those handles are a total must for taking pie out of the oven. Frankly, I dont know how I ever functioned without them.

I wont be tossing out my glass pie plates , but I have a feeling Ill be reaching for my cast iron pie plate most often. In fact, Im already planning on using it to put a bowlful of apples to good use!

Cons Of The Lodge Cast Iron Pie Pan

  • You cant see the bottom of the pie: Unlike clear glass, cast iron pie plates dont allow you to peek at the bottom of your pie to check on progress. I have a pretty good feeling for when a crust is baked-through, but I still do a visual check to ensure that theres no soggy bottom. With cast iron, you have to really rely on your intuition and clues from the upper crust.
  • Youll have to fiddle with baking times: My quiche was finished about seven minutes ahead of schedule both the crust and filling were fully cooked long before the timer sounded. Its also important to remember that because cast iron pans stay hot, there will be some carryover cook time, even after you remove the pan from the oven. This isnt a deal-breaker, but might be a hurdle for novice or nervous cooks.
  • Mind The Skillet Size

    Depending on the knob of a covered vessel, a Le Creuset cast iron product, for example, should be able to withstand up to 500 degrees in the oven and be broiler-safe.
