Rare Breed 1168 Proof Review

Looking at the laser code on the side of this bottle tells me this Rare Breed 116.8 Proof is a 2018 release and that makes me happy. Happy because it tells me that Wild Turkey is still strolling along putting out great Rare Breed releases despite no longer giving them a release code as they have in years past. Though, really, was there any doubt?

I like the new bottle, the new label and the overall new design esthetic thats happening here with the good ol WTRB, but I gotta say, I miss the codes of old. There was something about looking at a bottle on the shelf, seeing the code and knowing how long its been there that was fun. Anyways, enough asking for whats not going to happen, time to get on to the bourbon review.

The true, bold spirit of Wild Turkey has been captured in this authentic barrel proof whiskey, creating one of the finest bourbons in the world. Uncut with water, Rare Breed is an uncompromised Kentucky bourbon with tones of sweet tobacco and hints of orange and mint, making it a remarkably smooth whiskey legend.

Wild Turkey Rare Breed 750ml

Rare Breed is a “barrel-proof bourbon,” meaning it is bottled directly from a variety of barrels at the proof it reaches in those barrels, with no added water to lower the proof or dilute the flavor. This bourbon is a unique marriage of Wild Turkey 6, 8, and 12 year old stocks, which give the whiskey a rich, exceptional flavor that is remarkably smooth, considering its high alcohol content.

“”I love it. Magnificent nose. A big bourbon with the proportions being generous and almost perfectly proportioned.” Whisky Magazine

Wild Turkey Rare Breed Rye Overall And Score

Aroma has something clay-like and earthy to it but on the whole, its warm, spicy and with enough oak to keep everything wonderfully aligned Palate has a bigger oak and spice presence that also carries nice darkly sweet and candy shop sweet profiles Finish is oak heavy but carries plenty of sweet and spicy notes to keep a good balance

A smoothly executed dram that screams rye without being dill-heavy and keeps me coming back for more. This Wild Turkey Rare Breed Rye is a fantastic new addition to the WT lineup and can proudly sit side-by-side with the always fantastic Rare Breed Bourbon. This is the kind of rye whiskey I want on my shelf at all times and is giving the Pikesville Rye a run for its money for my favorite off-the-shelf rye.

SCORE: 4/5

Wild Turkey Rare Breed 1168

Tasted neat in a Glencairn after a few minutes rest

Color: rich copper

Nose: English toffee, vanilla bean, brown sugar, charred oak, ripe orange peel, nutmeg, baked apples & cinnamon, hints of woody-herbal spice

Taste: nutty caramel, dense nougat, brown sugar, honey-butter, warm citrus, vanilla cola, molasses, boozy sweet tea

Finish: long & comfortably warm salted caramel, pepper, maple chews, spicy oak, sassafras, leather, faint cinnamon & clove

Overall: This 2021 bottling is everything Rare Breed should be not a note more or less. In fact, this may be the best nose on any Rare Breed since the 2017 label transition. Its loaded with dark toffee, brown sugar, baked fruit, sweet & savory spice, and the perfect degree of maple-esque oak char. It sips well under proof . Hell, it almost warrants availability as liter and 1.75 liter bottles. Wait did I say almost? Forget that! Ill clarify: We need Rare Breed in liter and 1.75 liter bottles. There. Much better.

Regardless of volume, Wild Turkey is kicking 2021 off right with its latest run of Rare Breed. That is, Januarys is no slouch. I only hope I can continue to find it with ease, sans-premium. The list of once-available, once reasonably priced bourbons is seemingly shrinking by the day. While I wish Wild Turkey and the Russell family every bit of acclaim and success , Id also like to keep drinking their whiskey without driving cross-state or skipping a mortgage payment.

Wild Turkey Rare Breed Barrel Proof Straight Rye

Wild Turkey Rare Breed Rye Review
  • Rank: 5
  • Style: Straight Rye
  • Place of Origin: Kentucky

Rare Breed bourbon enjoys notoriety as a great value, and this new rye stands shoulder to shoulder with it. A gift for Wild Turkey fans from master distillers Jimmy and Eddie Russell, its not chill-filtered, making it even more full-bodied and rich. Zesty aromas of mint, eucalyptus, pine, and cedar chest mingle with sliced orange, candied strawberry, and sweet pecans on the nose, and that profile carries over into the nutty, spiced, herbaceous, and citrus-sweet flavors of the palate. With water the full spectrum of flavorsand the harmonious interplay of grain and barrelreveal themselves, leaving an unforgettable impression of perfectly controlled power. Susannah Skiver Barton

To the casual drinker, Wild Turkey Rare Breed Bourbon is just another bottle that they can reliably find on the shelf of most liquor stores.

The bottle and label are somewhat generic to look at which would partly explain why its always available. Of course enthusiasts of the brand would rather drink Malort straight from the bottle rather than see WTRB disappear from the shelves. Thank goodness it looks like its not going anywhere soon.

Wild Turkeys Rare Breed was one of the original gangsters of barrel proof bourbons back at a time when barrel proof bourbons werent really a thing.

Jackie Zykan of Old Forester said it best when she explained that all bourbon brands shunned the idea of bottling their bourbons at barrel strength because it was deemed irresponsible on the part of the distillery and not what a gentleman would prefer to drink in good company.

But times began to change and Booker Noe showed that there was a demand for barrel proof bourbon when he released his first batch of Bookers in 1988. Also worth noting: gentlemen did not become feral animals while drinking it .

So whether Wild Turkey fans want to believe it or not, it was probably because of Booker Noe that we even have Rare Breed in the first place.

The current iteration of Rare Breed has been around since 2017 wearing the same proof and sporting the same label/bottle shape.

Wild Turkey Rare Breed Rye Review

Todays rye review is brought to us by my favorite American distillery: Wild Turkey Rare Breed Rye. While Im thrilled to see this whiskey appear on the market, it does make me wonder if Eddie isnt spying on my diary somehow, because this is exactly the kind of thing Ive been hoping for.

Non-chill filtered and delivered at its full proof glory, this is the kind of thing that shows off their talent with rye. Theyve been making rye whiskey non-stop since 1974 and stand among the longest-running rye whiskey makers active in America today 46 years of rye whiskey making experience delivered without dilution.

Crafted in one of the few distilleries to remain dedicated to the art of rye whiskey, Rare Breed Rye is a blend of non-chill filtered rye. It is barrel-proof, meaning that its uncut, bottled directly from the barrels at the proof it is reached in those barrels. It is sister to award-winning Rare Breed bourbon and the first permanent super-premium rye in the Wild Turkey family.

Rare Breed 1168 Proof Review: Overall

Review #131

Oaky dry and sweet with an interesting fruitiness. Im not used to getting this much fruit in a Wild Turkey, but it seems to be really jumping up and down through the senses here. Thought thats not a bad thing. It helps even out the oak and brings a nice balance to the bourbon.

The aroma begins oaky and sweet and gains nutty notes as it opens. The palate is fruity sweet and oak heavy and the finish is just plain pleasant. Adding water to the Rare Breed 116.8 Proof pulls out some light biscuity notes on the aroma and a touch of butterscotch on the palate while enhancing the oak across it all. Nice. Im going to enjoy sipping through this one.

SCORE: 88/100

Wild Turkey Rare Breed Rye Overview

In 2020, we finally got Wild Turkey Rare Breed Rye. While this is far from Wild Turkeys first attempt at rye whiskey, for some reason this is the first time they have released it under the Rare Breed label. Up till now, theyve had Wild Turkey Rye 81 / 101 proof, Russells Reserve 6 year and Single Barrel ryes, and the 2019 Wild Turkey Masters Keep Cornerstone Rye.

Wild Turkey Rare Breed Rye Rating

Wild Turkey Rare Breed Rye smells and tastes quite good, providing a well-balanced and enjoyable experience thats primarily sweet and herbal, and less vegetal and earthy.

The downside is that it doesnt stand out in any way and as the list of very good to exceptional rye whiskey grows, Rare Breed Rye will likely get lost in the shuffle, although the Wild Turkey name will always grab peoples attention.

This is a solid rye whiskey with a household name, and maybe thats good enough. Honestly, I really expected more from this rye given how much I like Wild Turkey Rare Breed Bourbon.

Wild Turkey Rare Breed Rye Taste & Aftertaste

Wild Turkey Rare Breed Barrel Proof (No Bull$h!t Bourbon Review)

Wild Turkey Rare Breed Rye is loaded with citrus, licorice, pineapple, honey, and anise followed by lighter roasted oak, cinnamon, thyme, and fennel with some caraway seed rye breadiness. It starts sweet followed by a small surge of herbal and vegetal notes, with the oak remaining generally subdued. That combination of flavors and oak presence makes me think that this is about 5-6 years old.

Rich Bourbon For Great Price

Wild Turkey Rare Breed managed to immediately rise to my favorite bourbons category. This rich Kentucky whiskey offers a nice combination of dryness and velvety oil. With a full copper color it is also nice to look at while swirling it in your whiskey nosing glass.

And an explosion of fruits because of its high alcohol content. A true bang for buck American whiskey. Get it if you can!

Featuring another guest contributor bourbon review today. This one comes from Jonathan Jones from West Monroe, LA. Jonathan manages a liquor store and has been spreading the bourbon gospel for years. Were thrilled to have him reviewing Wild Turkey Rare Breed today on the blog. Take a read and let us know what you think of Jonathans work.

When I first started to explore the world of bourbon, I was so clueless the word novice wouldnt even be appropriate. For example, one of the first bottles of bourbon I purchased was Wild Turkey Rare Breedbefore Id ever even tried 101 or any other Wild Turkey product! You could say I dove headfirst into bourbon. Fast-forward 5 years and Wild Turkey 101 is my go-to and Rare Breed is still in my top 3 or 4 bourbons. Seeing as how there wasnt yet a review for Rare Breed on Bourbon & Banter, I decided to take a crack at it.

According to Wild Turkeys official website:

Rare Breed is a barrel-proof bourbon , meaning it has no added water to lower the proof or dilute the flavor after its been distilled. This bourbon is a unique marriage of Wild Turkey 6-, 8-, and 12-year-old stocks, giving it a remarkably smooth flavor considering its high alcohol content.

One more thing to note: Wild Turkey Master Distiller Jimmy Russell is known to keep his Rare Breed in the freezer, so after my initial pour , I stuck the bottle in my freezer to see if Mr. Russell is onto something.
