More Baking Tips For Apple Pie
- Use a trusted pie crust recipe. We always use this homemade pie crust recipe for our pies.
- Prepare the apple pie filling first and set it aside for 1 hour, allowing the apples to release their juices then mix the apples and the juices with a thickener like cornstarch or tapioca starch.
- Bake at 400 degrees F for approximately 75 minutes, turning a few times for even browning. The long bake time makes sure that the filling thickens inside the pie.
- If your crust starts to brown too quickly or looks to be turning too dark, mold a large piece of foil over a bowl thats been placed upside down to make a foil dome. Place the foil dome over the pie for the remaining bake time. This will slow the browning.
- Let apple pie cool before cutting into it. For the best results, the filling should be room temperature or cold before slicing. Cooling the pie gives the liquid inside a chance to thicken even more, which means it wont spill out into a pool when you cut into the pie.
How To Make Apple Pie
Begin by making the crust. Its easiest to use a food processor but you can also make it by hand if need be. Combine the flour, sugar, salt and baking powder in the bowl of a food processor fitted with the metal blade. Pulse a few times to combine.
Add the pieces of butter and shortening.
Pulse until you have coarse crumbs with lots of pea and chickpea-size clumps of butter and shortening within.
Add the water and pulse until the mixture is evenly moistened and very crumbly.
Dump the crumbly dough out onto a clean work surface and divide into two piles, with one pile about 15% bigger than the other.
Make two balls of dough and pat each one into a 5-inch disc. Wrap the discs in plastic and refrigerate for at least 45 minutes.
Take the larger disc of dough out of the refrigerator. Dust your work surface lightly with flour and place the dough on top sprinkle a little flour more over the dough. Use your hands to quickly knead the dough into a soft and malleable disc .
Roll the dough, adding more flour as necessary under and on top of the dough so it doesnt stick, into a 13-inch circle.
Remove the pie crust from the refrigerator and cover with a piece of parchment paper. Fill the crust with dried beans or pie weights.
Meanwhile, combine the apples, lemon zest, lemon juice, granulated sugar, brown sugar, salt, and cinnamon.
Toss until the sugar is dissolved and the apples are evenly coated. Let sit for at least 30 minutes.
Add the apple filling to the baked pie shell.

Ingredients For Apple Pie
This is just a quick overview of the simple ingredients that you’ll need for a classic apple pie recipe. As always, specific measurements and complete cooking instructions are included in the printable recipe box at the bottom of the post.
- Pie crust: your favorite pie crust will work, so feel free to make it from scratch if you like. My mom always uses a box of refrigerated Pillsbury pie crusts, so that’s what I’ve shown here.
- Apples: sweet-and-tart Granny Smith apples work best for the filling.
- Sugar: to sweeten the filling.
- All-purpose flour: to thicken the filling.
- Lemon juice: a bright, acidic touch. It balances the sweetness of the fruit and enhances the apples’ natural flavors.
- Cinnamon, nutmeg and salt: spices that season the filling.
What Can I Use If I Dont Have Cornstarch
You can simply use Arrowroot powder, Potato starch, Cassava root starch, all-purpose flour. Also, you can use wheat flour, rice flour, or even gram flour to the dish. Cornstarch basically makes the mixture thicker. Use any of the above-mentioned ingredients to give it the exact same texture and consistency.
