Key Lime Pie: The Best Dessert In The Florida Keys

Chef’s Market: Chocolate Covered Key Lime Pie Popsicles

Confession time: during my recent visit to the Florida Keys I ate Key Lime Pie for breakfast, lunch and dinner every single day. Id like to tell you that this was strictly for research purposes as I embarked on a quest to find the best Key Lime Pie in the Keys, but lets be honest, I just like to eat pie and when its listed on every single menu, it only makes it that much easier for me to indulge in a little sweet somethin somethin.

I may not have been able to narrow the search down to the best pie , however, I did end up discovering a whole lot of unique variations of the dessert.

Lemon Scones With Strawberry Glaze

Fluffy and light, extra lemony scones drizzled with the most perfect fresh strawberry glaze. These Lemon Scones with Strawberry Glaze are the perfect pick-me-up in the morning!

I always feel like Im trying to give up on my first love. Coffee. Its hard guys. That smell of fresh brewed coffee with my favorite creamerIm done. Even though you mess with my skin and give me the jitters, I just cant quit you! Whenever Im on that down with coffee kick, I always reach for my second favorite hot drink. The good ole Earl Grey standby. With cream of course. Ive been trying all sorts of teas lately so Ive been feeling totally British.

So what goes best with a nice cup of tea? These Lemon Scones with Strawberry Glaze of course! I know you saw that coming. So if you want to feel perfectly British, grab your favorite tea and make these scones. Theyre incredibly tender and have the perfect lemon bite to them. My favorite part is that crunchy top from the sprinkle of sugar right before baking.

  • 1 stick of cold unsalted butter, cut into small cubes
  • cup sugar, plus more for sprinkling
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • ¾ cup plus 3 tablespoons heavy cream
  • 3 large eggs
  • 2 tablespoons grated lemon zest
  • 1½ teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2 cups of Powdered Sugar
  • 1 cup Finely Chopped Strawberries
  • 1 teaspoon milk
  • Preheat your oven to 400 F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • With your mixer, combine the flour, butter, sugar, baking powder and salt until it resembles wet sand.
  • Red Velvet Caramel Slice

The iconic caramel slice redressed for Valentines Day with a chewy red velvet base, a dreamy caramel center, and topped with dark chocolate, chopped white chocolate, and cute little red heart sprinkles. This Red Velvet Caramel Slice is way better than a box of chocolates!

I know lots of people dont particularly look forward to the dreaded V-Day. Lets look at the perks though. Chocolate. Red Velvet. Cheap cutesy pink and red candies. Champagne. Oh, and chocolate. I know I mentioned chocolate already, butchocolate. I like Valentines because it distracts my brain from realizing my birthday was the day before and now Im one year older. Ughh. It helps to gorge on copious amounts of champagne and sweets. Which is why Im excited to dig into this huge slice of Red Velvet Caramel Slice.

Our cruise ship stopped in Key West for an entire day so my traveling companion made it our goal, in this port, to visit Kermits Key Lime Shoppe. She had learned about it on the Travel Channel. The cruise ship port is located several blocks from the pie shop but this was easily walk-able for the two of us. It was about a 10 minute walk. One nice thing about the shop is that you can sample many of the items before you purchase them. They have a large variety of key lime flavored foods from sauces, nuts, candies and oil to key lime pie, of course. There were even key lime dog biscuits which we did not try:) We enjoyed a slice of chocolate dipped key lime pie while sitting in their outdoor garden area with Koi pond. The pie was fantastic with the sweetness of the chocolate offsetting the sourness of the lime. Yummy! The last thing a cruise ship passenger needs is another dessert but a trip to this shop was fun and you might even find some edible souvenirs.

    Chocolate Covered Key Lime Pie

Have you ever heard of chocolate covered key lime pie? We hadnt either until we were on our Caribbean cruise last year. We had three ports of call and Key West was our final stop. I am a planner and I had researched each port we stopped at prior to leaving for our cruise, and I read that you cant go to Key West without getting a slice of chocolate covered key lime pie. My husband and I love key lime pie, so we knew this would be a must.

First I have to say that Key West is awesome! We went on the cruise with four other couples and had a blast, but Key West was definitely the best stop. Our favorite picture of us from the trip was right before we went on a two hour jet ski tour. I also was still blonde back then. Im thinking of switching back. Anyway, back on track After our jet ski tour, we found the shop that everyone was talking about.

The tourist sites were not lying when they said this chocolate confection was amazing. It was all I could do to get my husband to share with me! I miss that trip and someday I hope that we will go back. In the meantime, I decided that we could relive at least a part of that day by making these delicious treats at home.

This is an excellent alternative to your traditional chocolate dipped strawberries for Valentines day. I hope you enjoy!

You Havent Lived Until Youve Had a Swingle, the brainchild of Steves Authentic Key Lime Pies in Red Hook.

I walked through the outdoor Smith Street Market in Brooklyn Heights on Sunday and came upon a small stall selling only two things: Mini Key Lime Pies and Swingles. There is nothing like walking around an outdoor market, on a nice day, munching on the most filling and delectable popsicle of your life, aka the Swingle. If the Swingle is a mystery to you then prepare to be enlightened.

The Swingle: A frozen, mini key lime pie, dipped in dark chocolate, on a stick. And it could all be yours for six American dollars!

    Lets Start With The Pie

So for chocolate dipped key lime pie you need to start with a delicious key lime pie. I highly recommend this one. Its super simple, and freezes wonderfully. The filling is sweet, creamy & tart essential for a traditional key lime pie. The graham cracker crust is thick and gives great texture to compliment the filling and goes well with chocolate.

The one thing about this recipe is that you have to wait between chilling the pie after its baked and then, freezing the slices. You definitely want to make sure the pie has had the right amount of time to chill and then you really want to slices to be frozen. The last thing you want is for the key lime pie slices to be falling apart when you dip them in chocolate. Its worth the wait but its the one thing I wanted to mention before you get started.

Best Key Lime Pie In Key West & Beyond

Kermits Key West Key Lime Pie Shoppe

Kermits is a great spot for coffee or breakfast before heading out on a boat excursion. However, in addition to the cafe they also have a key lime pie shop featuring traditional, mango, strawberry, and my favorite, the chocolate-dipped key lime pie on a stick.

You will see frozen, chocolate covered key lime pie all throughout the Keys, but Kermits is one of the best. Their key lime pie is creamy and the chocolate is not too thick, making it easy to eat before it melts. By the way, the mango key lime pie isnt too shabby either!

Located in Old Town, a little off-the-beaten path for those wandering Duval Street, you will find the cute, local Old Town Bakery. They offer coffee, pastries, breads, and a unique flavor to their key lime pie. Instead of the traditional graham cracker crust, they use a crushed gingersnap crust. The pie itself is nicely limey and tart, and it is also quite creamy.

If key lime pie isnt your thing, they also have a delicious brownie with a chocolate ganache center. Just be forewarned that it is big enough to share.

Luscious Chocolate Covered Frozen Key Lime Pie Bites are perfect for summertime entertaining. Theyre easy-to-make, no-bake, and require only a few minutes of hands on prep time.

Ive teamed up with Athens Foods for todays post. I recently returned from Florida where I couldnt resist ordering chocolate covered frozen key lime pie on a stick. Its cool and refreshing and a must have on a hot Florida summers day. When I got home, I decided it would be fun to create a bite size version.

These no-bake Chocolate Covered Frozen Key Lime Pie Bites start with Athens pre-made, recipe-ready Mini Fillo Shells as the base. Youll find the Mini Fillo Shells in the freezer section at the supermarket. The shells are crisp and flaky and come in little plastic trays so the shells dont get crushed or broken.

I loaded up the shells with a creamy, tart key lime pie filling that doesnt contained eggs, so you dont have to bake them. Once the shells are filled and frozen, you simply melt the chocolate in the microwave and drizzle chocolate over the top of the bites.

Then to make the bites pretty, I topped them with a little whipped cream, a thinly sliced wedge of lime, and a little lime zest. The decoration is optional, but it does dress them up nicely for a party.

I used a dipping tool to hold the bite over the bowl of chocolate, but a regular fork would work as well.
