Trader Joes Pie Crust

The Trader Joe’s pie crust was the one most recommended to me by my friends. It has almost as much dough as one of my homemade crusts. Its one issue is that it is hard to unroll.

  • 11 oz each
  • Enriched flour, Palm Oil , water, butter, sugar salt

Tasting notes: Flaky with notes of butter, close to the taste and texture of homemade crust when tasted on its own after blind baking. Holds up well with pumpkin pie filling.

Structure notes: Followed directions to defrost overnight in the refrigerator and then let stand for 45 minutes at room temperature. Completely broke apart when I tried to unroll, beyond being able to be patched together.

So, I gathered up the dough in my hands and squeezed together until I made a solid disk. Then I rolled out the disk between the two pieces of parchment-ish paper that the pie crust came rolled up in. Refrigerated it for 10 minutes, then placed it in a pie plate and blind baked.

When I baked with the second crust from the package, I let it defrost on the counter for 4 hours. Then I unrolled it carefully. There was still cracking, but as I saw the cracking I could use the warmth of my hands to fuse together.

If I were to use again, I would let come to room temperature for a couple of hours first, and microwave for 10 sec after that, in order to make it easier to unroll.

Tips For The Best Pies

Making a pie isnt tough, but there are a few simple tips and tricks that will ensure you get the best gluten free pie recipes every time!

  • Keep the ingredients cold Keep your butter in the fridge, and add ice cubes to the water for the best results when making pie crust. Keeping the dough cold will allow the butter to soak in while baking and create a soft, flaky crust.
  • Dont touch the dough Okay, its not realistic not to touch your pie dough ever, but handling it as little as possible will prevent it from picking up any oils from your hands and becoming too warm.
  • Place pies on a baking sheet Preheat a sheet pan in the oven, and place your pie pan on it in the oven on the lowest rack to prevent soggy crust. It also helps catch any runover that may occur from an overly full pie pan!
  • Cool completely Unlike other desserts like cookies or brownies that can be enjoyed right out of the oven, pies need time to set. Otherwise, their center will be runny and nearly impossible to slice.

For The Cheaters Gluten Free Pie Crust

  • Blend & Form. Cut the bread into small pieces, and blend it in a food processor until a meal-like texture is formed. Then, add the egg, pulse a few times, and add the butter or coconut oil. Process all of the ingredients until a dough has formed.
  • Refrigerate. Roll the dough into a ball, and store it in the refrigerator for 1 hour.
  • Roll Out and Bake. Once all of the ingredients are combined and chilled, roll the dough out as you would a regular pie crust, and bake it in the oven for roughly 30 minutes.
  • You can also make traditional gluten free pie crust with gluten free all purpose flour, ice water, and butter or plant-based butter! Like we did in our latest pumpkin pie recipe. This method takes slightly longer but is equally as delicious!

Baking Tip: For pies with a more liquid center such as no-bake pies, fruit pies, or even quiche, par-baking the crust is the best way to prevent it from becoming soggy.

To do so, simply bake the crust for roughly 15 minutes or until it begins to brown. Then, add your filling, and bake as usual.

Pro-Tip: To save some time, skip this step and use a pre-made gluten free pie crust mix or a frozen gluten free pie crust shell instead!

    Easy Gluten Free Pumpkin Pie

Recently we tried out this one from Presidents Choice. Their products are always amazing is there anything they cant do well? We also just discovered their gluten free frozen waffles and they are the best homestyle frozen waffle weve ever tried gluten free or not!

My only complaint ab out the shells is that theyre not deep enough to hold all the pumpkin pie filling so we usually have to buy a few extra tart shells to use it up. One day Ill find a better use for the leftovers!

We used to par-bake our crusts whether fresh or frozen. But now? We Let them defrost on the counter for 15 minutes and bake them as-is!

With these two pies we conducted an experiment by par-baking one and leaving the other one unbaked.

When we tried a piece of each pumpkin pie, we couldnt tell any difference. So save yourself the time and energy and just bake them from raw!

We throw everything into one bowl, starting with beating the eggs.

Be sure youre buying pumpkin, not pumpkin pie filling for this recipe :).

These days, we substitute Swerve for regular sugar but feel free to use whichever you prefer. Sometimes we even mix the regular swerve with the brown sugar swerve for some extra flavour.

We dont like our pumpkin pies overly sweet so cut it back to only 1/3rd of a cup instead of 1/2 a cup.

I use a spatula to mix our filling because it helps me scoop every last bit out of the bowl

    and into the pie shells.

Wholly Wholesome is a natural foods brand available throughout the U.S. at Whole Foods and grocery stores that carry natural food brands.

    • 7 oz each
    • $5.99 for a package of 2
    • Frozen in aluminum pie tin
    • Flour, palm oil, water, cane sugar, sea salt

Tasting notes: Good taste, right amount of salt and sugar, tender and flaky, can keep eating

Structure notes: Did not crack or break with pre-baking. When baked with a pumpkin pie filling, it held up well. No soggy crust. Even though it is a deep dish pie crust, it doesn’t hold as much filling as my homemade pie crust, so when I cooked up a pumpkin pie with it, I had about a cup of leftover filling.

RECOMMEND. I would use this pie crust. The taste is good. I kept nibbling on the crusts I blind baked for this test. The crust holds up well for both blind-baking and baking with a pie. Would be good for a sweet pie or a savory pie such as a quiche.
