Faculty Leadership And Professional Development
Through our professional development program, our faculty has attended, facilitated and participated in multiple trainings both on-campus and off. Last summer , we read three books as a faculty, including White Fragility: Why Its So Hard for White People to Talk about Racism by Robin DeAngelo The Privileged Poor by Anthony Jack and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion: Strategies for Facilitating Conversations on Race by Caprice Hollins and Ilsa Gowan. This summer , faculty members have organized and will be hosting two book discussion groups, one focusing on How to Be an Antiracist by Ibram X Kendi, and the second on We Want to Do More Than Survive: Abolitionist Teaching and the Pursuit of Educational Freedom by Bettina Love.
In 2001, the schools Multicultural Council, a faculty leadership group, was formed to oversee efforts in this realm. The group was recently renamed the Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Committee. Its purpose is to promote sustained, institutional commitment to the schools practices and policies of diversity, equity and inclusion. This committee wrote and led the adoption of the schools Diversity Vision Statement in 2009.
We also have an ongoing book club that meets regularly to discuss books and articles that are meaningful in this area. Recent books have included A Burst of Light: and Other Essays by Audre Lorde and Blindspot: Hidden Biases of Good People by Mahzarian R. Banaji and Anthony G. Greenwald.

These 16 pages of handwritten notes, which have lain hidden away in a box in his home for 43 years, were sold for $1.2m at Christie’s in New York, to an anonymous bidder.
But for McLean aficionados there is a greater prize.
The drafts, unedited, reveal the creative process behind American Pie “from beginning to end”, according to Tom Lecky of Christie’s.
