When and why was communion first instituted? There is no one answer to this question. Different Christian denominations believe that communion has different origins, with some citing biblical references likening the body and blood of Christ to bread and wine. What Is The Purpose Of Communion

  • To commemorate the death of Christ: “Do this in remembrance of me.”
  • To signify, seal, and apply to believers all the benefits of the new covenant. In this ordinance, Christ ratifies his promises to his people, and they on their part solemnly consecrate themselves to him and to his entire service.
  • To be a badge of the Christian profession.
  • To indicate and to promote the communion of believers with Christ.
  • To represent the mutual communion of believers with each other.

The elements used to represent Christ’s body and blood are bread and wine. The kind of bread, whether leavened or unleavened, is not specified. Christ used unleavened bread simply because it was at that moment on the paschal table. Wine, and no other liquid, is to be used . This is a permanent ordinance in the Church of Christ and is to be observed “till he comes” again. Adapted from Easton’s Bible Dictionary ~ Excerpt from Crosswalk.com

How Can I Prepare My Heart For Communion

I have always believed it is wise to spend a moment in prayer before you take communion. When communion is served in your church, here are three things you can do to prepare your heart before you take it:

1. Reflect

For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, This is my body, which is for you do this in remembrance of me. In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, This cup is the new covenant in my blood do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me .

The beauty of taking communion is the opportunity to reflect on the great sacrifice that was made for our salvation. These elements are designed to be an eternal reminder of the price Jesus paid for our redemption. This should keep us humble before him remembering that if he didnt do it for us, we would still be without hope.

2. Repent

Everyone ought to examine themselves before they eat of the bread and drink from the cup .

3. Rejoice

For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your ancestors, but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect .

You can rejoice because your sins are forgiven.

You can rejoice because you belong to him.

You can rejoice because you are redeemed.

You can rejoice because you have eternal life.

Why Do Believers Partake Of The Holy Communion

Besides being born again in Christ, a healthy body and mind are the greatest blessings anyone can have. And the Holy Communion is Gods ordained channel of healing and wholeness.

On the night that He was betrayed, Jesus ate His last supper with His disciples. And knowing what He would accomplish through His sacrifice, He instituted the Holy Communion .

His loving instruction is that we are to remember Him as we partake of the Holy Communion. Jesus wanted us conscious of how His body was broken for our wholeness, and His blood was shed for the forgiveness of our sins. And whenever we partake in this consciousness, we proclaim the Lords death till He comes .

Today, when we partake of the bread, we are declaring that Jesus health and divine life flows in our mortal bodies. And when we partake of the cup, we are declaring that we are forgiven and have been made righteous. Jesus blood gives us right standing before God, and we can go boldly into Gods presence . When we pray, we can be sure that God hears us!

Meaning Of Communion: The Lord’s Supper

The Lord’s Supper is also called “the Lord’s table” , “communion,” “cup of blessing” , and “breaking of bread” . In the early Church it was called also “eucharist,” or giving of thanks , and generally by the Latin Church “mass,” a name derived from the formula of dismission, Ite, missa est, i.e., “Go, it is discharged.” The account of when Jesus instituted this ordinance of communion is given in Matthew 26:26-29, , Luke 22:19-20, and 1 Corinthians 11:24-26.

Jesus told us why we celebrate communion when He instated it. He said, Do this in remembrance of me .

When we take communion, we are remembering Jesus sacrifice on the cross. The bread and wine are tangible, visible reminders of Christs love. Rather than simply saying remember, Jesus gave us a reminder. Just as we depend on food and drink to live physically, we can only live spiritually through Christ.

Communion is a time of just that: communing. It is a chance to bring ourselves before the Lord and partake in the life He has given us through His death and resurrection.

Prayer For The Communion Bread And Cup

Thank You, Father, for this precious time of reverent reflection on all that Christ did for us at Calvary. And as we partake of these hallowed symbols at this holy communion table, we humbly take this bread and bless it and break it, and eat it in remembrance of you, for Your own dear body was broken for us. May we continue to feed on You in our hearts, by faith and with grateful thanks from this day forward, and may we walk worthy of our calling in Christ Jesus and live a life that is honouring to You.

And Lord, may we also come to You today in grateful remembrance of what the Lord Jesus Christ achieved on Calvarys cross for all or us, when He shed His precious blood on the cross, to pay the enormous price of our sin, and became a ransom for many.We share this cup of blessing in His name, remembering how He Himself took the cup in the upper room, as the hour of His crucifixion drew near and said, “this is My blood which is shed for many do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”Thank that for this holy sacrament and may I never approach the communion table in an unworthy manner, knowing that as often we eat this bread and drink the cup, we proclaim the Lord’s death until His coming again, in great glory and majesty. Praise Your holy name.Amen.
