How To Make Whole Grain Bread

Sara Lee Delightful Soft & Smooth Wheat Bread

Combine warm water, yeast, salt, flaxseed meal, flours, and maple syrup in a large bowl and stir until well combined. Add flour and knead in the bowl with your hands until the dough is no longer sticking to the sides of bowl.

Lightly grease the bowl with oil or nonstick spray. Place the dough in the bowl, cover and let rise at room temperature for at least 2 hours.

Create a hole in the dough with finger and pour oats and sunflower seeds. Knead the dough about 20 turns on a work surface and form a loaf shape.

Put the dough to a greased loaf pan and sift a light coating of flour. Cover and let rest for 45-60 minutes.

Preheat oven to 450F. Put a cast iron pan on the lowest rack and pour 1 cup hot water.

Once the oven is preheated, slash the dough 2 to 3 times with a knife making ½ inch cuts and place it on the middle rack of the oven.

Bake for 25-35 minutes until golden brown. Remove from oven. Let it rest for few minutes in pan. Remove from pan and let the bread cool completely before slicing.

Pepperidge Farm Farmhouse Hearty White

Most Americans grew up eating white bread, but it’s high time you got over the habit. The reason? White breads are made with refined wheat flour that has been stripped of its nutrients: namely fiber, energizing B vitamins, and countless minerals. What’s left is a ground-up powder of simple sugars that your body treats more like sugar than it does complex carbs. Without fiber to help slow digestion, eating this bread will only provide a short spurt of energy rather than keep you satiated for hours. And with four grams of sugar per slice, eating a single sandwich will fill you up with as much sugar as a small packet of Jelly Beans.

What Sara Lee Breads Are Vegan

While personally Im more of a Natures Own type of guy, I definitely dont have anything bad to say about Sara Lees breads.

Almost all of their breads are Vegan, with a few exceptions that contain honey, and one or two that contain dairy/butter.

They even have vegan English Muffins, which are usually never vegan when bought from a grocery store.

So which of their breads are Vegan?

Tip : Hunt For High Oxalate Ingredients

Look at the ingredients in whatever bread you are eating this is the first step to finding low oxalate bread. If the bread contains lots of very high oxalate ingredients, that bread will likely be high in oxalate!

It is unlikely that youll find a healthy bread that is completely free of very high oxalate ingredients unless you choose highly refined white bread which isnt ideal.

Instead, look for a bread that has fewer very high oxalate ingredients.

Remember, ingredients are listed on food labels inorder of how much is used. So, ingredients listed first are more important. And, ingredients listed further down are less important.

Very High Oxalate Bread Ingredients

To find low oxalate bread, look for bread that doesnt have these ingredients, or has them further down the ingredient list.

  • Cornmeal, Corn Flour & Corn Bran

Can I Eat Bread With Kidney Stones

Sara Lee Delightful Bread

Absolutely! In fact, bread and other healthy carbs are an important part of a healthy diet for most people.

Unfortunately, bread and other carbohydrates are often demonized. But, healthy whole grains are an important part of nearly any healthy diet. Whole grains are an important source of fiber, vitamins, minerals and energy!

The keys to healthfully eating bread and other carbohydrates are to:

  • Make sure you get most of your carbohydrate from healthy, whole food sources with fiber
  • Eat them as part of a well balanced plate that includes protein and vegetables

Tip : Dont Forget To Check Sodium

Keeping sodium in check is an important part of kidney stone prevention. Bread can be surprisingly high in sodium.

Always check the Nutrition Facts label to see how much sodium is in your bread. Both the general recommendations for healthy people, and people with kidney stones, suggest limiting sodium to no more than 2,300mg per day.

Who Should Eat Low Oxalate Bread

As always, I start my low oxalate posts with a disclaimer. Not everyone who has kidney stones needs a low oxalate diet. In fact, not even everyone with oxalate kidney stones needs low oxalate bread.

A healthy diet for kidney stone prevention must be individualized to your urine risk factors and medical history. And, a diet for calcium oxalate kidney stones is a lot more than oxalate!

Always work with a Registered Dietitian or doctor familiar with your medical history to learn what is best for you.

Kidney Stone Friendly Bread: More Than Low Oxalate

Kidney stone prevention is about a WHOLE lot more than oxalate even for people who need a low oxalate diet.

Whole grains, such as whole grain bread, are recommended for a general healthy diet because whole grains are higher in fiber and other healthy nutrients than white or refined grains.

Even though whole grains are a bit higher in oxalate, I recommend whole grains for the vast majority of patients with calcium oxalate kidney stones.

To understand why, lets dive into the anatomy of whole grains.

Sara Lee Soft & Smooth Whole Grain White Bread

Don’t be fooled by “light” options. Like this choice from Sara Lee, “Light” breads are often made with low-calorie fiber fillers and artificial sweeteners that can damage gut health and throw off your brain’s sugar calibration. Instead, we recommend sticking with a whole grain “thin-sliced” loaf. And don’t forget to look at the serving size: Some bread brands come in smaller loaves, where two slices are equal to 56 grams, whereas a single slice in a different loaf is the same weight.

Nature’s Own Butter Bread

Ask yourself: Does “butter bread” sound like a diet-friendly option? It’s actually not the butter that’s at fault here, it’s the calcium peroxide, a bleaching agent used in whitening toothpaste that’s been banned from food in the EU and China. That’s not the worst of it. This bread isn’t just made up of wheat flour Nature’s Own bulks it up with soy flour . Pass.

The 18 Unhealthiest Breads On The Planet

How many times have you heard about your friend shunning bread from her diet and losing weight instantly? It may surprise you to hear, but ditching carbs isn’t the only reason people drop weight with this approach It’s also because they’ve been eating the wrong carbs all along. For example: these breads.

Bread is supposed to be a simple food. In fact, it can be made with just two ingredients: water and flour .

Store-bought breads, on the other hand, can be made from more than 20. Among these 20-some ingredients? Inflammatory oils , dough conditioners , emulsifiers , bleaching agents , preservatives , and metabolism-wrecking added sugars .

Doesn’t sound too appetizing anymore, does it? Not only are these breads made from overcomplicated recipes, they’re also surprisingly deficient in the metabolism-boosting ingredients found in wholesome, whole-grain bread, and they’re loaded with potentially harmful ones. Leave these loaves in the bakery aisle!

Pepperidge Farm Farmhouse Oatmeal

Sorry, this bread is not nearly as good for you as overnight oats. This “Farmhouse” style bread is packed with two kinds of sweetenersâboth sugar and high fructose corn syrup . High fructose sugar is a common additives in store-bought breads, but you should be looking for brands without it. The sweetener has been linked to fatty liver disease and metabolic disorders, because our body turns fructose into fat and inflammatory compounds more readily than it does with glucose.

Wonder Bread Classic White

2006 Sara Lee Whole Grain White Baked Goods Commercial

Hello, childhood nostalgia! While you’re reminiscing about your Wonder days, don’t forget this fact: Wonder Bread doesn’t pass the test when it comes to healthy options. As with any other simple carb, your body is going to digest each slice of bread quickly, leaving your stomach grumbling and your blood sugar unsteady, which may lead to unhealthy cravings shortly after eating and extra calories consumed.

Arnold Whole Grains: Double Fiber

If you’re looking for extra fiber, seek out seeded loaves before defaulting to a bread with added fiber. Arnold’s recipe bulks up fiber with cellulose, a wood-pulp-derived fiber which only has the benefit of bulking up stool. That’s a significant downgrade from dietary fibers that help feed good gut bacteria, improve gut health, and boost satiety.

Benefits Of Whole Grains For Kidney Stones

Fiber

Perhaps most importantly, whole grains are a better source of fiber than refined grains. Diets adequate in fiber help combat much more than constipation. High fiber diets can help prevent cancer, aging, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and most other chronic conditions.

Most people eat much less fiber than they should. The average fiber intake in the United States is 15 grams per day. This is far below the goal of 25-38 grams per day.

Along with fruits and vegetables, whole grains are an important source of fiber in our diet.

Magnesium

It is well known that magnesium plays an important role in kidney stone prevention. Magnesium inhibits kidney stone formation. And, lower blood levels of magnesium are associated with kidney stones even when magnesium levels are in the normal range.

Whole grains, nuts and seeds are the primary source of magnesium in our diet. Nearly half of Americans are not eating enough magnesium. Completely avoiding whole grains because of the oxalate content also removes magnesium.

Importantly, magnesium supplements have not shown consistent benefit for stone prevention. Try to get enough magnesium through healthy foods.

Phytate

Phytate , is compound found in many plant foods. It is known for being an anti-nutrient because it blocks the absorption of some important nutrients such as calcium, magnesium and zinc.

However, phytate has many health benefits! It is an antioxidant and likely plays a role in stopping kidney stones from forming.

What Bread Is Vegan

Most bread is not vegan because it contains eggs, milk, or butter. However, there are some vegan varieties of bread available at health food stores and online. These breads are made with ingredients like soy milk, tofu, and vegetable oil instead of animal products. Some brands of vegan bread to look for include Food For Life, Ezekial, and Wasa.

Nature’s Own Honey Wheat Bread

Sara Lee Soft & Smooth Whole Grain White Bread

Don’t be fooled by its name. Although Nature’s Own contains whole wheat flour, it’s not 100% whole wheat, which means your body will treat it similarly to a highly processed white bread. This loaf also includes repeat offenders such as inflammatory-fat-laden soybean oil, mono- and diglycerides , and DATEMâa shelf-stabilizing emulsifier that is often made from artery-clogging partially hydrogenated oils.

Bimbo ‘made With’ Whole Grain White Bread

When they say “Made With Whole Grain,” Bimbo means it’s listed as the third ingredient: behind regular old white flour and water. What’s surprising to us is that this two-slice serving actually has 2 more grams of sugar than Bimbo’s Soft Wheat Bread. It’s likely because manufacturers increase the amount of added sugar to bread brands made with whole grains because consumers still look for that sweet taste of white bread with the “healthy” feeling of eating whole grains.
