Kermits Key Lime Pie Shop, owned by Kermit Carpenter, is a Key West institution. He is known to stand outside his brightly painted yellow and green store throwing pies at people for fun. His pies are light, fluffy, and creamy. The recipe is heavy on the egg yolks, which makes it very light. He tries to source fresh key limes from throughout the state and while the crust is not homemade, the whipped cream is. He also features key lime pie on a stick dipped in chocolate.

The History Of Key Lime Pie In Key West

There are a few stories going around about the origins of key lime pie. Some say it originates from New York while others say it was derived from the Magic Lemon Cream Pie published on a promotional brochure by Borden, a producer of condensed milk.

The story told in Key West goes all the way back to the 1800s, when Key West sponge fisherman kept limes on board to prevent sickness. The fisherman, called hookers by the locals, would whip up a sweet treat mixing the limes with condensed milk and sometimes adding a wild bird egg. Theyd pour it over stale Cuban bread and leave it out to set in the sun.

The fishermans wives took it a step further and baked it in a pie crust. It was a modest dessert of the working class, up until Sarah Jane Lowe Curry, the daughter-in-law of Floridas first millionaire started serving it. Known as Aunt Sally, she served it to the children visiting her home and it wasnt long until it was served in every restaurant in Key West.

KEY WEST, Florida Keys The Florida Keys sweetest treat is to be in the limelight Thursday through Monday, July 1-5, as fans of Key lime pie salute the island chains signature dessert and the tiny fruit that inspired it.

The 2021 Key Lime Festival is to include a Key lime pieeating contest, cocktail stroll, moveable feast pie tasting, wacky Key lime pie drop and even a scavenger hunt with a limey twist. The event was conceived by Florida Keys author and pie expert David Sloan, who penned The Key West Key Lime Pie Cookbook.

Believed to have originated in Key West in the late 1800s, Key lime pie was designated Floridas official pie by the state legislature in 2006. Its primary ingredients are condensed milk, egg yolks and the juice of the tiny yellow Key lime, with the filling typically nestled in a graham cracker crust and topped with whipped cream or meringue.

Events begin Thursday, July 1, with a 5-7 p.m. champagne reception at Key Wests historic Curry Mansion at 511 Caroline St., renowned as the pies actual birthplace. Attendees can meet Sloan and purchase autographed cookbooks during the event.

The festivals undisputed highlight is the World Key Lime Pie Eating Championship set for 12:30 p.m. Sunday, July 4, at the oceanfront Southernmost Beach Cafe at 1405 Duval St. After donning safety goggles, entrants must attempt to devour an entire 9-inch pie, topped with mountains of whipped cream, faster than the competition without using their hands.
