You can use olive oil to make both toasted breadcrumbs and croutons. They will retain their crispness when used in soups, salads, or as breading. To make, toss torn or cubed bread pieces with about 2 tablespoons of olive oil for every 1 1/2 to 2 cups of bread. Spread them out on a baking sheet and sprinkle them lightly with kosher salt. For seasoned breadcrumbs or croutons, sprinkle lightly with garlic powder and dried herbs, such as basil or parsley flakes.

Bake in a preheated 350 F oven for about 10 to 15 minutes. Use the croutons on salads or soups.

Finely ground toasted breadcrumbs make a great substitute for purchased fine dry breadcrumbs and can be used as a casserole topping, breading, or as an extender in meatloaf or meatballs. To make the toasted bread cubes into breadcrumbs, pulse the toasted bread pieces in the food processor until they are coarsely or finely ground to your liking.

So I might have a slight confession to make . . . most of the times Ive made macaroni and cheese in the past I was improvising. I would just fly by the seat of my pants, making it up as I went along. Not this time! Ive made this recipe a number of times now and it makes my stomach full of happiness every timeand Im sure it will do the same for yours.

But What About A Cast Iron Skillet

As you may have noticed, the photos show my macaroni and cheese baked in my cast iron skillet. I knew I was going to be taking photos so I opted for the prettier presentation.

As I mentioned, you can still create your cheesy roux in the skillet, add your noodles and then transfer the skillet into the oven, its just a little harder to contain the macaroni noodles when you stir in the cheese but not impossible!

So if you have either a cast iron skillet or a dutch oven, youre good to go. If not, no biggie, youll just have to use an extra casserole dish when transferring from the stove top to the oven to bake.

How To Make The White Cheese Sauce

My homemade cheese sauce is by far the best option when it comes to a good macaroni and cheese. You use 100% natural ingredients, and the sauce is as good as you can possibly get. I used this sauce for my and it was just perfect.

  • melt the butter in a large saucepan
  • add the flour and whisk well to get a smooth paste
  • gradually add the milk, whisking well to avoid lumps forming, and continue to stir until the sauce beings to thicken
  • add the black pepper, salt and dijon mustard, then in go the mozzarella, cheddar and parmesan

  • Cheese: For the best result I highly recommend buying your cheese in blocks and then grating this yourself. You can use a Food processor to grate your cheese or simply use a hand grater which is what I mostly use as I find it therapeutically.
  • Cooking the Pasta: Do not overcook your pasta, always cook your pasta 3 mins less than the actual recommended cooking time on the packet. Also do not over salt your pasta as there is already salt in the cheese and you dont want to overpower those flavours.
  • Roux: Now When making the Roux , ensure you whisk this slowly and continuously to avoid lumps , add your cheese in small batches and whisk all through the cooking process

What Cheeses Should I Use For Macaroni And Cheese

I always recommend starting with a base of sharp cheddar. It melts well and has fantastic flavorclassic, with a hint of tang. I recommend using at least 1 cup of cheddar.

From there, its really personal preference, but our favorite combination ended up being cheddar, American, and Pecorino Romano. This combo was very creamy and had a nostalgic, classic flavor that appeals to both kids and adults. That said, there are plenty of other great options depending on your mood or personal tastes.

  • Try gruyere for a subtle nutty, sweet flavor.
  • If youre looking to add some heat, try Hatch Chile, Chipotle, or Pepper Jack cheese. You can even use this Buffalo Chicken Mac and Cheese as a base!
  • Monterey Jack has a very mild flavor, but is a great melting cheese. Try it if youre looking for an ultra smooth, buttery flavor.

And since we are talking about holidays, Thanksgiving is now just around the corner. Sure, we’ll have turkey, pies, and enough sides to feed an army, but there is always room for some cheesy heaven, right? And this delicious baked mac and cheese is the very best comfort food I can think of.

Now, the classic macaroni and cheese can be ready in about 15 minutes if cooked on the stove top only. And that’s amazing! But, how about we take the humble dish to the very next level, and make it even better?

  • Step 1- Firstly, Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
  • Step 2- Secondly, Boil elbow pasta until done.
  • Step 3- Now, Add Mornay sauce to the pasta and mix together.
  • Step 4- In this step, you have to place pasta into a 9×13 pan.
  • Step 5- Now, add the remaining 8 ounces of sharp cheddar to the top of the pasta.
  • Step 6- Then, add the Panko mixture on top of the cheddar.
  • Step 7- Now, bake uncovered for 30 minutes.
  • Step 8- Lastly, panko will be golden brown and cheese sauce will bubble up on the edges.

Ive always resisted the classic recipe. Not sure why but most likely due to the fact Ive been fed bad versions in the past. So I wrongly assumed that macaroni and cheese, made the traditional way, was bland, stodgy and not exciting enough to repeat.

So I tried to re-invent it by coming up with my own interpretations. The first one was Cheddar and Gruyere Mac and Cheese with Polish Kielbasa, which is actually pretty damn good.

I wanted to make a more sophisticated version of the classic macaroni and cheese with cut-up hotdogs, my husband loved so much. So I used funky shaped pasta, better cheese and smoky sausage. Funny enough, it worked. My family and my readers fell in love with that creation.

This inspired me to go on and make Bacon and Brie Mac and Cheese, then Layered Italian Macaroni and Cheese. All good efforts but not exactly the thing people want when the craving for mac and cheese hits. They want pure, unadulterated, classic version. So here it is!

What Should I Serve With Creamy Baked Mac And Cheese

Easy Baked Macaroni and Cheese Recipe with Panko Bread Crumbs

For a weeknight dinner, I like to pair this with That Good Salad or a side of peas and applesauce .

At cookouts, its the perfect compliment to Grilled Skirt Steak, the best hot dogs, or Cajun Burgers.

Of course, this is also a staple at holiday gatherings. Paired with all your other favorite Thanksgiving dishes, this mac can definitely feed a crowd.

How To Make Baked Mac And Cheese:

Cook the Pasta: Cook your favorite pasta according to package instructions, just until al dente t! Strain and rinse with cold water. Set aside.

Cook the Bacon in a large skillet until perfectly crispy. Leave a tiny bit of that delicious bacon grease in the pan for the next step the sauce!

Make the Sauce: Melt butter, whisk in flour and cook, stirring, for 2 minutes. Reduce heat to low and gradually whisk in milk. Mix together cornstarch and half and half. Gradually add it to skillet followed by mustard, chicken bouillon, onion powder, garlic, powder, parsley, salt and pepper. Cook until slightly thickened and remove from heat. Stir in cheddar cheese.

Add cooked pasta and some of the bacon.

Add topping: Pour mixture into 8×8 baking dish. Sprinkle parmesan cheese on top. Add Panko, melted butter and olive oil to a skillet and cook over medium-high heat, stirring constantly, until crumbs are golden brown. Evenly sprinkle bread crumb mixture over the gourmet mac and cheese. Add remaining bacon crumbles on top.

Bake at 350° F for 15-20 minutes or until bubbly. Serve warm.

Tips For The Best Baked Jalapeo Popper Mac And Cheese

  • Using block cheese is the way to go when youre making mac and cheese. The pre-shredded cheese is coated and wont melt properly. Grate it yourself for the best results.
  • Cook your pasta to slightly less than al dente, about one minute shy is perfect thats about 7 minutes for macaroni.The reason is that this is baked mac and cheese so the pasta will continue to cook in the oven.
  • I used elbow pasta but really, any tubular, short pasta will work.
  • The roux is super important to getting the creamiest cheese sauce. Three things to look for:
  • The roux is whisked together until bubbly and golden.
  • Whisk in cold milk not warm to prevent the flour from clumping.
  • Cook the roux, stirring nearly constantly, until you see bubbles on the surface and then continue cooking for an additional 2 minutes before adding the cheese. This will keep the sauce from turning grainy.

Youll notice this recipe calls for two jalapeños. I removed the seeds and membranes before dicing which cuts down on the heat a bit. I mean, this is Jalapeño Popper Mac and Cheese so a little heat should be expected. If youre like whaaaat? Bring on the spicy! Keep the seeds and membranes intact and dice away OR add another jalapeño.

I further tame those spicy jalapeños by sautéing in butter. This also serves another purpose as it gives the cheese sauce amazing flavor. I add back in a little heat and lots of flavor by adding in some TABASCO® Sauce.
