Shepherd’s Pie Recipe: How To Make Mini Shepherds Pie With Ground Beef

Start by sauteeing the garlic, onion, carrots, and celery in the olive oil for 2-3 minutes, until fragrant. Add the mushrooms and cook for a further minute.

Next, turn up the heat to high and add the ground beef and cook until no longer pink. Add the remaining ingredients and bring it to a simmer, before reducing it to medium heat. Let everything simmer together for 35-40 minutes until it thickens into a gravy.

Now, transfer into a greased baking dish, cover with the mashed cauliflower topping. Sprinkle with the parmesan cheese and butter and bake for 35-40 minutes, until a deep golden brown and the edges are bubbling. Remove the shepherds pie from the oven and let it sit for 5 minutes, before serving.

Shepherd’s Pie Freezer Meal Option:

If you want to prepare this as a freezer meal, cook the recipe as is, through all the steps except garnishing. Once the dish cools to room temperature, cover it tightly with foil and store in the freezer for up to two months. Once you’re ready to eat it, bake for one hour in a 350ºF oven, with the foil still in place.

How To Make Shepherd’s Pie

FIRST STEP: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

SECOND STEP: Boil the potatoes in water to cover until fork tender and then drain the water.

THIRD STEP: Add the butter, sour cream, milk, and salt and pepper to taste and mash the potatoes with a hand masher or mixer until you reach your favorite mashed potato consistency. Set aside.

FOURTH STEP:: In a large skillet brown the ground beef along with the onions and garlic. Drain any excess grease.

FIFTH STEP: To the same skillet add 2 cups of the frozen vegetables, cook for about 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally.

SIXTH STEP: Sprinkle the flour over the meat and veggies and stir to mix.

SEVENTH STEP: Add the tomato paste and stir to mix it in.

EIGHTH STEP: Then add the beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, rosemary, thyme, and bay leaf. Bring to a simmer and then reduce heat to low. Cook uncovered for 10 minutes, adding additional broth if necessary to prevent the meat from drying out.

NINTH STEP: Remove from heat. Remove Bay Leaf. Spread the meat mixture in an even layer in a 9×13 dish that has been sprayed with nonstick spray.

TENTH STEP: Top the meat with the mashed potatoes making an even layer of potatoes. You can get all fancy and pipe the potatoes onto the meat or you can use a spoon and spread the potatoes evenly and then use a fork to make designs and ridges in the potatoes. These little ridges will brown nicely

Rich and flavorful beef shepherds pie recipe, made easy in one skillet! Ground beef, tender vegetables, and fluffy mashed potatoes what could be better!

Classic comfort food, made with readily available ground beef, sautéed mushrooms and vegetables, and a rich savory gravy sauce, all topped with fluffy mashed potatoes. No oven safe skillet? No worries, Ive got that covered!

Its officially comfort food season complete with chilis, casseroles, stews/soups, and great one pot/skillet meals! This is absolutely my favorite food season, since the flavors are just fantastic, and all the food makes you want to go curl up on the couch with a blanket and a big bowl or plate.

Here in the Chunky Chef household, we love our one pot meals. I even have a whole section of them here on the blog, have you checked them out? Theres something really awesome about a meal that tastes amazing, and theres not a TON of dishes to wash afterwards.

Some of you may be questioning the name here after all, a shepherds pie is not traditionally made with ground beef, but rather made of ground lamb or mutton. My family is not a fan of the taste of lamb/mutton, so I always make ours with ground beef. Plus, here in the Midwest, ground beef is much more readily available. I almost named it Cottage Pie, which is what a Shepherds Pie made with beef is usually called but heres why I didnt.

Meat Pie Key Ingredients

Do not be intimidated by the list of ingredients, it all comes together rather quickly, so gather away:

  • YELLOW ONION | You could also use a sweet or white onion too!
  • LEAN GROUND BEEF | I use locally ranched, grass fed beef, use your favorite blend, mine was 80/20. Also try ground lamb, chicken or turkey
  • DRIED HERBS | parsley, rosemary and thyme
  • WORCESTERSHIRE SAUCE | gives ALL-THE-FLAVOR!
  • GARLIC | more punch of flavor
  • TOMATO PASTE& AP FLOUR | the paste adds depth and richness while thickening, along with the flour
  • BEEF BROTH | Use a good quality broth here, it finishes the intense flavors
  • PEAS & CARROTS | I could not find frozen peas and carrots, so I chopped some carrots and tossed them in with the onions, used fresh peas and tossed those in at the end.
  • FROZEN CORN KERNALS | fresh too if you have them!

Why Is It Called Shepherds Pie

The name Shepherds Pie actually comes from England a few centuries ago and they used the term to define a dish made of minced meat with potatoes on top.

It was called Shepherds Pie if it was made with lamb and they actually called the dish Cottage Pie if it was made with beef.

So I guess if we are going to get technical, this recipe is for Cottage Pie.

How To Store Shepherds Pie

This easy shepherds pie recipe makes such good left overs. I love how all the flavors in the beef filling marinate and taste amazing the next day. When storing it in the fridge. Make sure to completely cover the the dish with plastic wrap. To try and form a air tight seal. The leftovers will keep for up to three days. If you plan on keeping it longer that that. Freeze the portions immediately that you are not going to use with in 3 days.

How To Make Beef Stew In A Slow Cooker

To make this recipe in the slow cooker, complete steps 1-3 as listed below, except you will add the browned beef directly to the slow cooker.

Add the stock, soy sauce, and ketchup to the pan with the onions and bring to a boil then pour into the slow cooker. Add the remaining ingredients to the slow cooker, cover, and cook on high for 3-4 hours or low for 6-7 hours. Garnish with chopped scallion.

Note: Youll want to cut the carrots and potatoes into larger chunks so that they dont become too soft in the slow cooker.

How To Make Cottage Pie

Youll want to add the ground beef into a pan with your diced onions and cook over medium high heat. Break up and take off the burner once meat is no longer pink. Then well get to combining ALL THE THINGS!

  • Get your mashed potatoes cooked and prepared at this time so theyre ready.
  • Stir in your gravy and frozen vegetables with your meat. You can do this right in the pan or in a bowl.
  • Pour this mixture into your casserole dish and spread out evenly across the pan.
  • I like to taste a bite of it now and see if I want to season with salt a bit more now.
  • Preheat oven to 450 degrees F.
  • Spoon on prepared mashed potatoes and bake. make sure to smooth it on the top of your beef mixture so its the same thickness across the dish.

    • Sprinkle parmesan on now if you want to add it.
    • Bake for 20 minutes 30 minutes or until it is heated thru.
    • Allow to sit for a good 10 minutes before serving so it can thicken more and solidify a bit.

    This is really a complete meal so you dont need any easy side dishes to serve with it.

    Its bake and done which I love! Pair with your favorite drink or cold water and BAMdinner is served.

    Now with any of my easy recipes I share here, please add additional seasonings you love. If you cant have a traditional Shepherds pie without a bit of Worcestershire sauce, then add it into the mix!

    The only issue with a traditional shepherds pie is that they usually require 10+ ingredients and a lot of prep. No, thank you! Because my family enjoys this dinner recipe so much, I came up with a way to make it super quick and easy with just 6 simple ingredients.

    In a large pan, simply brown the ground beef and and drain the excess grease. Add the tomato soup, frozen veggies, seasoning and about half a cup of water to the pan simmer for 5-10 minutes.

    Evenly spread the beef mixture onto the bottom of a greased 9×13 baking dish.

    Spread your mashed potatoes over the top and then sprinkle with 1-2 cups of shredded cheddar cheese.

    Bake in a 400 degree oven for about 30 minutes or until the cheese starts to brown.

    Even though this shepherds pie is incredibly easy to make, its not missing any flavor! I was pleasantly surprised at how good this simple recipe was, in fact, my husband thought it was better than the complicated recipes Ive made in the past.
