Tool Changes And Tool Selection On The Cnc Lathe

There are a couple of differences between typical CNC Lathe tool changes and Mill tool changes. First, the lathe uses no M06 commandthe tool is changed as soon as the T word is executed. Second, many lathes encode a tool wear offset into the address following the T word:

Tttww

In the example tt signifies the tool number and ww signifies the wear offset. Different controls may be set up with differing numbers of digits to select the tool and wear offset.

CNC Lathes are set up this way so that each tool can have more than one wear offset. This is done because turning work often needs to be to very tight tolerances, and the same tool is often used for multiple features on the part. By using a different wear offset for each feature, the machinist can measure the parts as they come off and tweak the wear offset so each feature is to the specified tolerances.

This all assumes your lathe has a tool turret. It may notsome lathes use Gang Tooling. Its beyond the scope of this intro chapter, but gang tooling will be covered in a later article. Suffice to say that with gang tooling, the tools are mounted on the slide and the program selects the tool by explicitly programming slide motions on the X and Z axes.

We Invented The Lightweight Aluminum Pie Jaw

The Abbott Pie Jaw® offers you the ability to make more accurate parts faster than you ever have before.

Standard soft jaws keep only three points of contact around the part. Constant chuck pressure could damage the part and at high rotations the part could deform between the contact points. Additionally, traditional soft jaws cannot be utilized on thin walled or odd shaped parts without modification .

The Abbott Pie Jaw® maintains 360 degrees of contact, so parts cannot deform, giving you a greater degree of accuracy. Our Pie Jaws® are designed to grip the part more effectively without distorting thin walled or odd-shaped parts.

Most of our Pie Jaws® are made from aerospace aluminum alloys. The light weight of the aluminum Pie Jaws® enables you to rotate your chuck faster than before, so you can turn parts faster with less wear and tear on your machine. Substantially lighter weight jaws enhance operation utilization and shop efficiency.

Concentricities and close tolerances are easily and consistently maintained. In addition, machine and tool life are significantly extended due to more effective application of coolants.

In fact, Pie Jaws® can be used in over three-quarters of all your turning operations.

Always Follow Your Recommended Maintenance For Your Workholding System

Even the speediest of quick-change workholding systems will yield poor results if used improperly. Always adhere to the manufacturers recommended maintenance procedures, and never spin a chuck faster than its maximum rpm rating.

Clamping pressures should also be carefully monitored. As spindle speeds increase, centrifugal force tends to make most chucks open up, allowing the part to come loose if insufficient clamping pressure is used. In addition, hysteresis can cause clamping forces to skyrocket during sudden deceleration, possibly damaging the workpiece. Some manufacturers make chucks that are specially designed to prevent both of these conditions by maintaining consistent clamping at any rpm. Whichever way you go, take care of your chuck, and it will take care of you.

How Do You Bore Soft Jaws On A Cnc Lathe

chuckjawsboresoft jaws

. Similarly one may ask, what are lathe soft jaws?

Soft Jaws. Soft jaws for the lathe chuck are very useful particularly for holding circular object that might be crushed by normal jaws. The jaws can be machined to grip the object around most of its circumference. These consist of three fabricated clamps that fit onto the normal outside jaws of a three jaw chuck.

Similarly, are lathe chuck jaws interchangeable? A single set of good brand jaws can cost similar to a cheap chuck of that size so be prepared for sticker shock and, when youâve got them donât abuse them. Bolt on soft jaws can be somewhat interchangeable but there are at least several different patterns of groove, serrations and bolt sizes floating around.

Also question is, what is a soft jaw?

Simply put, âsoft jawsâ are mild steel jaws that take the place of the hardened jaws that are supplied with your vise. Basically, you simply machine the shape of your part into the soft jaws and youâve got an instant and very repeatable fixture for your parts.

How do you use a boring jaw ring?

How to install:

  • Place the jaw boring ring over our chuck and locate the bring ring pins in the counterbore of your chuck jaws.
  • Turn the jaw boring ring until snug.
  • Activate your jaws.

Automatic Chamfer And Corner Rounding With G01

When facing and turning at 90 degrees to one another, youll get very sharp edges. Its very common for drawings to specify that these edges are to be broken with a chamfer or radius. Many controls provide a feature for just that purpose called automatic chamfer and automatic corner rounding. Once you get used to it, its a very handy feature to have, but it takes a little getting used to how to set it up. I prefer to use C or R rather than I and K, so thats what I will explain here. Well use this little chart:

To use the automatic corner break feature, the G01 must move in only one axisX or Z. Using the chart, choose which axis is moving and in what direction. For each axis and direction, there are two possible chamfers . Choose the one you want and that tells you the sign of the value. The radius is the amount of the value. Use the C word for a chamfer and the R word for a radius.

Lets try an example. Say we are moving up in X and on our next move well go left in Z . Looking at the chart, we go up and then we want the C/R- branch. So, to give a chamfer, we use C-0.05 for an 0.05 chamfer. For a radius, we use R-0.05 for an 0.05 radius.

Heres another trick: if youre programming in GWE, just try out positive first and you can see whether it goes the right way. Switch to negative if it doesnt. That lets you dispense with the chart.

Okay, lets go over the example from the top of page screen shot. Heres the g-code:

    Power Chucks And Cylinders

If you work on CNC lathes or multi-functional turning-milling centers, power chucks are the solution you are looking for. The main advantage of this type of chuck is the speed of clamping and unclamping of the workpieces and obtaining high clamping forces with a minimum of effort on the part of the operator. We recommend them especially where frequent clamping and unclamping is needed.

Our power chucks are made from high quality forged alloy steel. They have not only a high load carrying capacity and durability, but also a high gripping accuracy and repeatability. All BISON Power Chuck bodies are carbonized and hardened to 60 HRC. The bodies and relevant working parts are finely ground, enabling the final product to be precise with excellent mechanical properties. The result is a rugged chuck with the most effective price-performance ratio in the market.

Soft Top Pie Jaws for 15" Chuck, Aluminum, 2.5H

Whenever a new component comes into workshop, CNC Setter have to select the jaws to grip that component.

Sometimes cnc setter have those jaws ,

but in some situations the component has a shape that is difficult to grip, so cnc setter have to tinker the cnc machine jaws,

sometimes cnc setter have to weld some extra pieces with the standard shape jaws,

and other times cnc setter have to machine the cnc machine jaws itself to make jaws to properly grip the required component.

Basic G01 And G02/03 Moves: Lines And Arcs

The CNC Lathe can make the same basic moves as the millG01 for lines and G02/03 for arcs . The difference is you can mostly ignore the Y coordinate . Just leave it out of the programs, and dont use the corresponding incremental J or V either.

Once you get used to it, lathe programming is quite a bit easier than mill programming. You are typically trying to create a profile of some kind. If your lathe has sophisticated canned cycles like G71 Rough Turning, this can be particularly easy, but even programming by hand isnt too bad.

Is Manual Machining Faster than CNC for Simple Parts?

    • Jaws Face Shape
    • Jaws Face Teeth

This cnc machine jaws properties list might be even more longer, but actually I want to tell you that a very simple looking cnc machine jaw is an important entity of the cnc machine workshop and cnc machine jaws has lot more properties than we realize.

Every cnc machine jaw has a height width and length, these sizes are almost dependent on the cnc machine chuck and the component we are going to grip. For bigger cnc machine chucks definitely bigger jaws will suit, because bigger cnc chuck has a slightly wider serration pitch than the smaller cnc machine chucks.

    Diameter Versus Radius Mode

Your CNC lathes controller will be setup to start in either diameter or radius mode. In diameter mode, X-axis values specify diameters, while in radius mode, they specify a radius from the axis. As you would expect, diameter mode X-axis values are exactly twice what the radius mode values are, so it is important that you know which mode your lathe is using.

G-Wizard Editor has a revision command that lets you change programs back and forth between diameter and radius mode:

Lathe diameter mode is simple: multiply all the Xs by 2

As you can see, it aint rocket sciencewe use the Adjust Addresses Revision to multiply all the Xs by 2.

Some machines may also have the ability to change between radius and diameter mode using special g-codes. You can set whether GW Editor defaults to radius or diameter in the post too.

Many machines also implement a gcode that lets you switch back and forth:

    G190: Radius mode.

    G191: Diameter mode.

Tricks For Turning Face And Od Of Soft Pie Jaws

How to Insert the Jaws Into a 3-Jaw Chuck on a Metal Lathe

Trying turn the OD and Face of Pie Jaws for ID chucking.I know how to turn soft jaws using several of the common methods, but I need to turn the face and say the first .5â³ of the od so I can ID clamp on parts. I was able to cheat on my old manual lathes because of the scroll gears on the chucks were pretty true. I could OD clamp to hold the jaws, but now that I upgraded to CNC, my hydraulic chuck doesnât allow that.Does anyone have any methods they care to share? Iâm thinking I need to purchase large rings to ID chuck on to make this happen. The boring rings that use the bolt holes will not work. Thanks!

  • ewlsey said:08-04-2016 07:59 PM

If your chuck is reasonably tight, you can cut the jaws without the chuck clamped on anything. Then just move the jaws one tooth. Iâm sure itâs against the rules, but it works most of the time.

  • cpifer3 said:08-04-2016 08:49 PM

What size Id do you need to chuck in, I have found that old Hydraulic Tubing works great for this, just cut off the width you need, turn the faces parallel, and you got a nice ring to chuck in. The Id is usually honed round fairly close , so it works good for this application. Just gotta watch your chuck pressure, or you will turn that tubing into a triangle real fast.

  • cpifer3 said:08-04-2016 08:51 PM

Ive also turned a smaller face groove in the pie jaws, and used a smaller piece of tubing to chuck in if needed.
