Their menu consists of handmade sweet and savory pies featuring almost everything from the traditional Moms Apple Crumble to the more extreme Mexican Chocolate Pie. But if your mood is leaning more towards savory than sweet, the menu holds mouthwatering creations such as Chicken n Cornbread and Chorizo Breakfast Hand Pie. See, I told you there was a pie for breakfast, brunch, lunch, linner, dinner, and that meal you eat in between 10pm and 3am.
The pies come in their own mini pie pan plate , and yes, its adorable.
The Mac n Cheese pie can only be described as a round, melt-in-your-mouth, buttery, brown crust filled with ooey, gooey, cheesy noodles.

A few years after opening and Ori Menashes Bestia continues to turn tables and require weeks-out reservations. It shouldnt be surprising, given this spots penchant for nailing straightforward but innovative Italian food that arrives hot from that centerpiece of a wood-burning oven. Some of Bestias menu highlights have become modern icons of L.A.s dining scene: the Spaghetti Rustichellaa small pyramid of noodles under dungeness crabis synonymous with this hard-to-land reservation.

Shopping at the Apolis Common Gallery is like stepping into an epic round-the-world travelogue, where every globally-sourced item has a story behind it. Leather sandals were crafted by a four-person co-op in Tel Aviv jute market bags were assembled by a collective of mothers in Bangladesh a womens co-op in Nepal hand-knit the 50s-style sweaters made in collaboration with cycling brand Rapha. Brothers Raan and Shea Parton launched Apolis the brand in 2004, employing and empowering artisans worldwide to create their heritage-inspired piecesthis flagship shop serves as a showcase for the full product range, as well as an event space and gallery.

Santa Fe Freight Depot
Turn north on Merrick Street toward Traction and walk straight ahead do not turn onto Traction into the live/work development, aiming your feet northeast toward South Santa Fe Avenue where youll find the quarter-mile-long 1907 Santa Fe Freight Depot that has been the home of SCI-Arc for nearly 20 years.
Made of reinforced concrete, the building is reputed to be as long as the Empire State Building is tall. The school was an important catalyst for the neighborhoods revival when the area was still called gritty. Ask at the front desk about current exhibits of experimental projects by contemporary architects, check out the school swag in the store and take a tour of the studios

Southern California Institute Of Architecture
Now take in the massive black sculpture on the east side of Merrick at the end of the 4th Street Bridge. The work of art is part of the Southern California Institute of Architecture campus where were headed next. Used as the schools graduation pavilion, its called League of Shadows and was designed by Silver Lake architects Marcelo Spina and his wife Georgina Huljich.

Shepard Fairey’s Peace Goddess
Shepard Fairey’s “Peace Goddess” was the first work installed under the L.A. Freewalls project in 2009. It may soon be replaced by Fairey himself with a new mural covering the entire wall.
You can find another Shepard Fairey on the Alameda side of the Angel City Brewery depicting Ronald Reagan holding a sign that reads “Legislative influence for sale.” Unlike the “Peace Goddess,” which is a wheat paste transfer, Ronald Reagan is painted directly on the brick.

A Guide To Walking The La Arts District
From The Pie Hole, turn the corner onto South Hewitt Street. Check out the mural that leads to the entrance of the hotel that was the first quality hotel in Los Angeles for African Americans. Once the site of Als, a famous punk rock bar and stage, the unfussy hotel was also the home of some of the first artists to move into the district back in the day.

Los Angeles is changing for the better. Downtown especially, neighborhoods not so hospitable a few years back are now going through metamorphosis. Condos are being built all around downtown and the the urban boom is in full effect. This sudden migration of people moving to the city is good for business as well, especially the food business people have to eat somehow. The Pie Hole in the Los Angeles Art District is exactly what the urbanites needed. They are a little shop that serves coffees, teas, and of course, pies. Located directly across from Wurstküche, it is around some other popular eateries in the area. With the days menu written on butcher paper, and with white walls and concrete floors, they really took the minimalistic approach in design. This type of charm suits the area well. This is The Pie Hole.
It was a treat to have tried the pies at The Pie Hole. Certain not your average hole in the wall, The Pie Hole is unique and found a nice little niche in the city. Serving hot drinks and desserts as well as savory items, the menu is plenty yet not overwhelming. They definitely serve some delicious pies dont expect to go and get a whole pie for a party either. They are more of a place for orders on the go or a small bite to eat with friends. Thank to this spot, pies are cool again.

The Downtown La Arts District: All About The Art
Much of the art you will see on walls in the L.A. Arts District was not sanctioned by the City of Los Angeles, which imposed a moratorium on murals back in 2003. In defiance of the ban, and with the cooperation of the community and local businesses, the L.A. Freewalls mural project began facilitating the acquisition of walls for international and local artists to paint in 2009. Shepard Fairey was the first artist to participate in the project with his wheat paste mural “Peace Goddess” at 806 East 3rd Street. The project also included French artist JR and German twin brothers Raoul and Davide Perre was known as How and Nosm. As long as the murals stayed in the district, there wasn’t too much objection, but the arts community continued to lobby for change and in 2013 the ban was lifted.
Collaboration is a longstanding tradition in the L.A. street art world. Some works are created as one work by multiple artists, like the UTI Crew. Other walls are shared by separate artists or groups of artists and may or may not appear as a cohesive work. They may be different interpretations of a concept or totally unrelated.
The transition from graffiti walls to more mural walls helped clean up the neighborhood, and more people started moving into the area, bringing more restaurants, and new businesses. Original residents worry about the current gentrification and the loss of fringe status. For the time being it’s a mix of industrial grit and new upscale developments.
Murals In La Arts District
By now youll have begun to discover that the Arts District is an open-air art gallery with 100 massive murals painted on the sides of buildings throughout the area. When you reach the corner of the hotel, turn around and youll see one of my favorites La Abuelita. Painted on the side wall of the building, the collaborative work by three artists features Navajo blanket weaver Martha Gorman Schultz.
These massive works of art dont always stay up indefinitely. Many are gone within a few months to be replaced by a new work. While theyre free for the looking and photographing, if you want to know more about what they represent and the creators, join a walking tour.

Popular Location For Filming
In addition to visual artists, the area is also a popular location for filming. The evening I arrived from LAX, a crew was setting up the next scene in front of my friends building while actors lounged nearby and checked out the snacks at the craft services table. Nearly every day, models and photographers can be seen taking advantage of the edgy urban background. Welcome to LA.
During the week, dogs and their human parents are out in force in the early morning and after work. They all seem to know each other and stop for a quick sniff and gossip check before the rush to work. In the afternoon, the dog parks are filled with bouncing mutts of all sizes and breeds while their owners sit by with doggie snacks and check e-mail.
La Arts District Tours
There are several guided and audio tours available for the Downtown Los Angeles Arts District.
- Art and Seeking offer private guided tours or a downloadable audio tour of the street art of the Downtown L.A. Arts District conducted by art professor Lizy Dastin.
- LA Art Tours offer regularly scheduled Downtown L.A. Graffiti and Mural Tours, as well as tours of other L.A. art enclaves like The Brewery and the Santa Fe Art Colony. Private tours are also available.
- Cartwheel Art offers irregularly scheduled tours of the Arts District.
- The Mural Conservancy offers periodic group tours, but they’re not on a schedule, so you have to sign up for their mailing list to find out when they’re happening. All tours include a one-year membership in the Mural Conservancy.
- Six Taste offers food tours of the L.A. Arts District.

The Changing Face Of The Downtown La Arts District
The surfaces in the Downtown Los Angeles Arts District are ever changing. New works are constantly popping up. Some are there for a fleeting moment others endure. If you’re lucky, you may witness part of the transformation, like this mural painted in 2015 by the Black Light King and the UTI Crew on a wall on Alameda near 4th Place.
Historic Nabisco Landmark Is Now Biscuit Company Lofts
Walk west through the Urban Radish parking lot to Mateo Street, then continue south and youll run into another historic landmark, the National Biscuit Company, or Nabisco, at the corner of Industrial and Mateo.
Built in 1925 to manufacture biscuits and sugar wafers, its now the Biscuit Company Lofts and a designated historical building. If you ask politely and the doorman is willing, step into the lobby and check out the interior. On the Industrial Street side, the former loading dock is now the site of Church & State, a popular restaurant with a French-Mediterranean focus. Chef David Féau is a Michelin-starred disciple of the great Guy Savoy.

The Pie Hole Celebrates Pie Season With New Location In Anaheim Packing District
The OCs original food hall is about to add Southern Californias award-winning pie and coffee shop to its collection this November. The Pie Hole, the bakery shop that brought us the original and world-famous Earl Grey Tea pie announces the grand opening of its new Anaheim location inside the Anaheim Packing District located at 440 S Anaheim Blvd, Anaheim, CA 92805 as it continues to celebrate its 10-year anniversary milestone. To mark the special occasion, a grand opening weekend Pies-giving ceremony will be held on both Saturday, November 13 and Sunday, November 14 where the first 100 guests each day will receive a free slice of The Pie Holes most popular pies. An influencer and media day is scheduled Friday, November 12 where guests will receive special 10th Anniversary pie and coffee gift sets and a preview of the new location.
The Pie Hole started as a local neighborhood family pie shop co-founded in 2011 by Sean Brennan and Pie Mom Becky Grasley sharing her generations-old family pie recipes from Pennsylvania with a new community in the Arts District in downtown Los Angeles. The Anaheim location will be The Pie Holes second in Orange County and ninth companywide additional locations include Orange, Arts District, Pasadena, Hollywood, Santa Monica at Gelsons Markets, two in Japan and one in Saudi Arabia.

Inside The A+d Architecture And Design Museum
The A+D Architecture and Design Museum hosts only temporary exhibits, but this exhibit on reinventing Wilshire Boulevard is an example of what to expect. It included creative fantasy buildings and landscapes that turned the iconic street into towers and even a crazy loop with upside down buildings. Some looked incredibly real and others just playful silliness.
