The Best Sweet Potato Pie Recipe
This homemade sweet potato pie is one of my holiday must-bakes. Its creamy and smooth with warm spices reminiscent of pumpkin pie. Its not overly sweet, which is a nice change from the more decadent fall desserts and a lighter option when it comes to Thanksgiving desserts.
One thing I love about sweet potato pie is that its simple and straightforward to make. I like to use baked sweet potatoes as a base, though you can also use canned sweet potatoes and while I think homemade pie crust adds a nice touch, those short on time can easily use store-bought crust as well. Then its just a matter of combining the filling ingredients and baking!
A Holiday Pie Starring Sweet Potatoes

Have you ever had sweet potato pie? It’s the Landcruiser of holiday pies. Heavy, dense, feeds many. Similar in some respects to a pumpkin pie, but whereas pumpkin pie is all about the spices, sweet potato pie is all about the sweet potato.
You can actually taste the wonderful flavor of sweet potato in this pie, which is only enhanced, not supplanted by the additions of cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and vanilla.

Southern As Sweet Potato Pie
The conversation of sweet potato pie versus pumpkin pie usually brings into focus the regional preferences associated with these dishes, with the typical split presented as the North preferring pumpkin and the South choosing sweet potato.
If we trace the trail of how sweet potato pie came to hold such a prominent place on southern Thanksgiving tables, we find a multilayered story one that includes a sweet vegetable brought to the Americas from Peru, a tradition of dessert imported from Europe, agriculture , and the history of slavery and emancipation in America. Together, these factors give us the pie we enjoy today.

Melt 3 Tbsp butter in a small saucepan over medium heat. Add 1/2 cup of brown sugar and cook, stirring, until smooth, a couple of minutes. The sugar should bubble up a bit.
Stir in 1 Tbsp of heavy whipping cream. The mixture should bubble up a lot. As soon as you’ve mixed in the cream, add the pecans. Stir to coat the pecans with the sugar mixture.
As soon as the pecans are coated with the sugar mixture, pour them over the top of the pie. Use the back of a metal spoon to spread them out in an even layer on the top of the pie.
Let the pie cool for a few minutes before serving.
A Deep Tart Pan Not A Pie Pan
Baking a pie in a tart pan instead of a pie pan also breaks from tradition, but since my pie pan is often occupied with another pie on Thanksgiving, I stumbled upon this discovery out of necessity. A deep metal tart pan with a removable bottom is the best pan for baking sweet potato pie. The thin metal browns the crust without the need for blind baking, and the fluted sides and removable bottom makes for a better presentation, too.

So What Makes The Best Sweet Potato Pie Recipe
So I learned a few things in testing and creating this recipe:
- Blind baking the crust will keep you from ending up with a soft and gooey pie crust.
- Using baked sweet potatoes instead of boiled sweet potatoes concentrates their flavor rather then ending up with water logged boiled sweet potatoes.
- Browning the salted butter adds adds some depth of flavor to the pie filling. Salted browned butter and sweet potato were made to go together
- Keeping it light on the spices lets the sweet potato flavor shine.
- I personally preferred the classic texture of using mashed by hand sweet potatoes vs. those pureed in a food processor.
- The lightly caramelized flavor of evaporated milk was preferred to the flavor of milk or cream.
- Tent pie crust edges with foil to prevent over-browning.
- And being careful not to over-bake the pie prevented deep cracks from happening .
This is easily my favorite sweet potato pie recipe! And I prefer the marshmallow topping for that nostalgic flavor combination, plus I feel thats what will really set it apart from pumpkin pie but feel free to use either whipped cream or marshmallow topping.
If you use the marshmallow topping youll want to prepare and toast it when its time to serve , so its nice and fluffy.

How To Know When The Sweet Potato Pie Is Done
The best sweet potato pie recipe may take less time on your oven . Check the pie at the 45 minute mark, if the pie jiggles in the middle the Pie is done, and if the pie sloshes put the pie back into the oven to cook longer checking every 10 minutes to make sure you do not over bake the pie. If you see the pie crust getting dark, add tinfoil around the edges of the pie crust to avoid it burning.
