Whats The Difference Between Regular Persian Limes And Key Limes
First, its easy to see key limes are much smaller than Persian limes. Once sliced youll notice that key limes have a lot of seeds like a lemon, where Persian limes are seedless. These tiny key lime fruits have a much thinner rind, higher acidity, a stronger flavor and a distinct aroma that is easily recognized. Persian limes are actually a cross between a key lime and a lemon, which explains a lot! People often use regular Persian limes in place of key limes, and thats fine too. However, if youre a key lime fan, take the few extra minutes to squeeze fresh key limes for this recipe.

Difference Between Limes And Key Limes:
I feel like we need to take a short detour and chat about the difference between lime varieties. This recipe calls specifically for Key Limes which arent the typical Persian variety you find in the store.
They are quite a bit smaller and less tart which makes them perfect for desserts! While you can use regular lime juice in a pinch I highly recommend you search the store for the smaller variety. Sometimes you can even find just the juice next to the canned fruit aisle of the store.

Creating This Key Lime Ice Cream Recipe
One of my absolute favorite summer flavors is lime. From recipes like Chewy Lime Sugar Cookies and Cherry Limeade Cupcakes to sweet and tart margaritas, nothing screams summer quite like bright citrus flavors.
Ive actually contemplated purchasing an indoor fruit tree, but considering I completely lack a green thumb, I figure that it would survive about a week tops. Trust me, I cant even keep parsley alive, which is pretty pathetic.
Gardening woes aside, this ice cream is loaded with all of the familiar flavors of your favorite key lime pie recipe, even the crunchy graham cracker crust and its incredibly simple to make.
No bases to heat and chill, you simply whisk the ingredients together and freeze according to your machines directions. After a short time, youll have a dreamy, velvety ice cream bursting with key lime flavor.
What better way to cool off than with this simple key lime pie ice cream?
How To Make Key Lime Pie Ice Cream
Begin by making the crust. In a medium bowl, combine the graham cracker crumbs, melted butter, brown sugar, and salt. Using a spoon first and then your fingers, mix until evenly combined, making sure to break up any lumps of brown sugar.
Press the crust into an even 1/4-inch layer on the prepared baking sheet.
Bake until golden around the edges, 7 to 8 minutes.
Let cool, then use a spoon to break into chunks.
Set the crust aside while you make the filling. To start, zest and juice the limes.
In the bowl of an electric mixer, beat the cream cheese until light and creamy, about 1 minute.
Add the sweetened condensed milk and beat until completely smooth, 1 to 2 minutes.
Add the heavy cream, lime zest, lime juice and salt.
And beat until evenly combined, about 30 seconds.
Arrange half of the crust evenly over the bottom of an 8-by-4-inch loaf pan.
Pour the ice cream mixture over top.
Then cover with the remaining crust crumbles. Cover with plastic wrap and freeze until completely firm, at least 8 hours or overnight.

We started experimenting with lime ice cream recipes after Ruby set a goal to learn how to make ice cream. This was one of the flavors that she requested, and after a couple of tries we came up with a version that received two thumbs up from everyone in the family.
This ice cream isnt made from key limes , but still has the tangy flavors and crunchy crust that youd expect from a key lime pie.

How Long Is Homemade Ice Cream Good For
Homemade ice cream is good for up to 2 months in the freezer when stored properly.
I like to keep my homemade ice cream in this super cute freezer safe container but before I put the lid on, I press plastic wrap down pretty tightly on the ice cream. That helps to keep the air out so the ice cream stays fresher longer.

Easy Key Lime Pie Ice Cream Recipe
Homemade ice cream is one of those perfect summer foods.
Cold, sweet, creamy, and honestlyso much better than most of what you can buy at the store.
The only downside to a lot of ice cream recipes is having to cook and then chill the custard base before you can churn it.
I love these ice creams and the mouth feel that you get from a base made with eggs, but I dont love the advance planning they require.
Thats reason number one why I love this ice cream recipe: no cooking or chilling required. Which means no having to think ahead. I can think about Key Lime Pie Ice Cream in the morning and be eating Key Lime Pie Ice Cream that evening.
The other reason I love this recipe is because I am obsessed with all things key lime right now.
Making this ice cream is so easy: Just whisk together the ingredients and then churn it according to your ice cream makers manufacturer instructions.
The ice cream base is sweetened with sweetened condensed milk, which also gives the ice cream an amazing creamy texture.
Some graham cracker crumbs folded into the churned ice cream adds extra texture and even more of that key lime pie feel to this recipe.
What Is Key Lime Pie
Key lime pie is a dessert pie made with a creamy, custard filling made up of egg yolks, sweetened condensed milk, and Key lime juice thats baked in a graham cracker crust.
The classic American dessert originated in Key West, Florida in the late 1800s. Since fresh milk and access to refrigeration werent readily available, people had to utilize canned milk, hence the sweetened condensed milk in this recipe!

Tips For Making No Churn Key Lime Pie Ice Cream
- Make sure to whip the cream into stiff peaks. This will give the no churn ice cream a stiffer texture closer to store bought ice cream.
- Gently fold the whipped cream into the rest of the mixture, but do not over mix. This will cause too much air to get into the ice cream.
- If your ice cream gets too hard to scoop, run your spoon or scoop under hot water for about 30 seconds before scooping.
I have read that adding a bit of vodka to the ice cream before freezing can help with it being too hard or forming extra ice crystals. I have not tested this yet, but do plan to do so in future batches.
How To Make Key Lime Ice Cream In The Ice Cream Maker
This is where this recipe is so simple. All you do is combine the ingredients and add them to your ice cream maker and follow the directions according to your ice cream maker.
This recipe does contain eggs so you will need to heat the ice cream base first and then chill before processing.
Thats it, youll have some amazing key lime ice cream in no time!

What Is The Difference Between Lime And Key Lime
Regular limes, or Persian limes, are the limes we typically see in grocery stores. They have a tangier flavor with a peel that becomes greener as they ripen.
Key limes, on the other hand, take on a more yellow hue and have a sweeter flavor as they ripen. They are also typically much smaller than Persian limes and contain more seeds.
