When Jannie Teitelbaum set out to create a food business, the first thing she did was ask her friends what kind of food they wanted. The answerconvenient meals without processed ingredientsmade Teitelbaum recall the frozen chicken pot pies of her childhood, and she began testing recipes. One day, six months into the process, her son proclaimed her latest chicken pot pie the best he had ever eaten, and Great Lakes Pot Pies was born.

The company’s chicken pot pies come in three sizes: 5-inch, 9-inch, and a 5-ounce hand pie. Besides chicken, the pot pie contains carrots, celery, onion, peas, and corn, and is seasoned with thyme and just a touch of cayenne pepper to wake up the taste buds. Great Lakes also carries gluten-free and dairy-free chicken pot pies.

You must order a minimum number of pies to qualify for shipping: 9-inch pies come in packs of three, 5-inch pies in packs of eight, and hand pies in packs of 12. The 9-inch pies sell for about $24 each, 5-inch pies are about $10 each, and hand pies are around $7 each. Gluten-free and dairy-free pot pies cost a little more. All pies ship frozen with dry ice, and shipping is extra.

The Best Homemade Chicken Pot Pie


  • In a large pot, add butter, potatoes carrots, onion, celery and garlic. Sauté until tender. Stir in flour until blended.
  • Gradually add broth.Bring to a boil. Cook and stir for 2 minutes or until thickened. Stir in peas, 1/2 cup cream, parsley, garlic salt and pepper. Stir in chicken.
  • Spoon into two ungreased 9 in pie plates. In a small bowl, whisk egg and 1 Tbsp or cream, set aside.
  • Roll out the pastry to fit the top of each pie. Place over filling and trim, seal and flute edges. Cut slits in pasty to vent. Brush top of pies with egg mixture.
  • Bake at 375 for 30-35 minutes or until golden. Let stand for 10 mins before cutting.
  • NOTE: You can bake both pies, or cover and freeze one potpie for up to 3 months. To use frozen potpie, remove from the freezer 30 minutes before baking. Cover pie loosely with foil. Place on a baking sheet. Pre heat oven to 375-degree F and bake until lightly browned and bubbly, about 40 to 45 minutes. Oven times will vary.

The pies are carried in many grocery stores on the East Coast, but now, thanks to their nationwide delivery, anyone in the country can get one.

    While chicken pot pie may seem like it isn’t worth shipping across a continent, this isnt a make it at home pot pie: the chicken is slow-cooked in a large pot of broth, delicately hand-pulled, and the pie crust is expertly crimped.

    Plus, it comes with extra gravy, because we all need a dappling of sauce under our pot pie slice for the real experience. It arrives uncooked, so crank up that oven, bake for 90 minutes, and enjoy the perfect savory flavor.

    Stouffer’s Chicken Pot Pie Featured A Crisper Panel At The Top Of Its Tray

    We had high hopes for this next pie as it featured a metallic crisper panel at the top of its box. It was a good size and the second most expensive at $3.99.

    Despite having the crisper panel, it was still cold in the middle after we pulled it out following the six-and-a-half minute cooking and two-minute standing time directions. Once it was popped in for another two minutes, it was ready to go and it was worth the wait.

    It came out looking the best by far and the crust was also by far the best you could literally taste the butter they tucked into the dough.

    The chicken was great, but it did feature fewer veggies than some of the other pies, in our opinion. The gravy was a bit runnier than the Boston Market gravy and we also did not find it super flavorful, although it was pretty welcome with the richness of the crust.

    Can I Freeze Chicken Pot Pie

    Yes! Chicken pot pie is one of our favorite freezer meals.

    To freeze, simply follow the recipe instructions, except for egg-washing and baking. Cover and freeze for up to about 3 months .

    To use, thaw overnight in the refrigerator. Then follow the remaining instructions for the recipe. It will likely need an additional 5-10 minute bake time due to it being cold in the refrigerator.

    Freshly Baked

    If your Chicken Pot Pie is already baked, please store it in the fridge. For best results, the pie should be consumed within 4 days of purchase. To warm, place on a baking sheet in a preheated oven at 350°F. Bake a 9 pie for 45 minutes, a 5 pie for 25-30 minutes, and a hand pie for 15 minutes.


    If your Chicken Pot Pie is frozen, please store in the freezer until you are ready to bake and consume. For best results, the pie should be baked within 3 months of purchase. To bake, place pie on baking sheet and place in preheated oven at 350°F. Bake a 9 for 90-120 minutes, a 5 for 50-60 minutes and a hand pie for 35-40 minutes. When ready, the crust should be golden brown, and some filling should spill from the venting slits on the top.

    Once baked, cool the Chicken Pot Pie for a minimum of 15 minutes before serving.
