What Is The Best Way To Press The Graham Cracker Crumbs Into The Pie Plate

How to make a Homemade Graham Cracker Pie Crust | I Heart Recipes

Forget everything you know about pressing in a homemade crumb crust into your pie plate because we’ve all been doing it wrong! While logic might tell you to place the crumb mixture in the middle of your pie plate and start pressing it in there, this process makes it messy and hard to get an even crumb base all the way up the sides. The easier and faster way to do it is to start forming the edges of the pie crust first, and then press the crumb mixture down into the bottom of the plate.

Here are the steps:

  • Gather the crumb mixture loosely up the sides of the plate until all the edges are covered with crumbs.
  • Form the top edges of the crust and neaten them up by pressing them together with two fingers. It may feel like you won’t have enough crumbs to fit the bottom of the pie at this point, but don’t worry. Plenty of crumbs to go around.
  • Next, start packing down the sides of the crumb crust with your thumb in an even layer. As you do this start moving the excess crumb mixture toward the center of the pie plate.
  • Continue packing the crumbs from the outer edges towards the middle until you have a single layer.
  • Then with your fingers, a spatula, or the bottom of a measuring cup pack down the crumbs until everything is tight and even.
  • Baked Graham Cracker Crust

I prefer to bake my crust for a few minutes for a firmer crust that holds together well as you cut slices and serve. Once your crust has been pressed into your pie plate, bake until the crust is lightly golden brown and fragrant, about 6-8 minutes at 375º F. Then, remove from the oven and allow to cool completely before adding a no-bake type pie filling.

    Ways To Adapt This Recipe

You can spice up the basic crust in this recipe with a pinch of cinnamon, nutmeg or cardamom or any other spice that complements the filling. Ditto for orange zest, lemon zest and, of course, lets not forget vanilla extract.

This recipe can also be adapted to many other dry cookies such as vanilla wafers, chocolate wafers, gingersnaps, and one of my favorites, Biscoff cookies. You will need 1 1/2 cups cookie crumbs for one 9-inch pie.

A simple graham cracker crust is perfect for so many recipes. From key lime pie to a chocolate tart, a graham cracker crust is a never fail favorite.

Youll never need to buy store-bought crust again after you make this perfect graham cracker crust.

It is one of the first pie crust recipes that I made on my own. I was in the seventh grade and was determined to make a pie for my Daddy. After watching Mama make what seemed like a million pies in my lifetime at that point, I knew exactly what to do. It didnt hurt that Id written out the recipe in a notebook while I watched her make it.

Kitchen Tips: Easy Graham Cracker Crust Recipe

    Sugar

Skip the store-bought, pre-packaged graham cracker crusts and make your own! A good graham cracker crust takes only a few ingredients and several minutes to make, with this solid, simple recipe youll never need to buy a storebought crust again!

I kind of understand the hesitation to make your own pie crust when it comes to traditional pastry crusts. I know the frustration of trying to roll out a perfectly circular crust, of sprinkling flour over your whole counter-top to keep things from sticking, and the annoyance of cleaning up afterwards.

I always opt to make my own crusts, but I can at least understand why someone might choose the pre-packaged variety.

But when it comes to graham cracker crusts, I really feel that theres no excuse to ever buy one from the store. For one, they dont taste nearly as good as one that you could make yourself, and secondly they are so supremely simple to make that its almost laughable.

Today I want to walk through the simple steps to make your own graham cracker crust. The whole process takes about five minutes, and once you have this recipe I have a feeling youre going to avoid the storebought crusts from now on.

We start with graham crackers, or pre-crumbled graham cracker crumbs. Youll need approximately 10 graham cracker sheets, which translates to 1 ½ cups of graham cracker crumbs.

Next comes the butter, which essentially acts as the glue that holds the whole crust together.
