As Peter prepared to close his letter to a persecuted first-century church, he turned his attention to instructions for the leaders. Calling them his fellow elders, he urged them to be shepherds who serve their flock not out of obligation but out of love . Peter had already shared in their persecution through imprisonment and beatings and would eventually lose his life in his service for Jesus.

Hed also seen firsthand the servant leadership of Christ, who on the night before His crucifixion stooped to wash the feet of His disciples. Jesus is the role model Peter followed, and the apostle wanted his fellow elders and shepherds to do the same . Whatever ministry God has given to us, however large or small, we can avoid the pitfalls of pride, materialism, and authoritarianism if were motivated by a singular love for God and His people. The bag of snack chips was small, but it taught an American missionary a big lesson. Working one evening in the Dominican Republic, she arrived at a church meeting and opened her chips when a woman she hardly knew reached and grabbed a few from the bag. Others helped themselves, too.

Reflect: What cultural biases do you harbor? How could you let God transform those attitudes so you humbly serve all?

Prayer: Father, exchange my arrogance regarding others with Your humble love.

Odb Message For Today

A man named James took an adventurous, 1,250-mile journey down the West Coast of the USbiking from Seattle, Washington, to San Diego, California. A friend of mine met the ambitious biker near the cliffs of Big Sur, 930 miles from his starting point. After learning that someone had recently stolen James camping gear, my friend offered his blanket and sweater, but James refused. He said that as he traveled south into the warmer climate, he needed to begin shedding items. And the closer he got to his destination, the more tired he became, so he needed to reduce the weight he was carrying.

James realization was smart. Its a reflection of what the writer of Hebrews is saying too. As we continue our journey in life, we need to throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles . We need to travel light to press on.

As believers in Jesus, running this race requires perseverance . And one of the ways to ensure we can keep going is to be free of the weight of unforgiveness, pettiness, and other sins that will hinder us.

Without Jesus help, we cant travel light and run this race well. May we look to the pioneer and perfecter of faith so that we wont grow weary and lose heart .

Todays Scripture & Insight:

The wind is tossing the lilacs. With that opening line of her springtime poem May, poet Sara Teasdale captured a vision of lilac bushes waving in gusty breezes. But Teasdale was lamenting a lost love, and her poem soon turned sorrowful.

Our backyard lilacs also encountered a challenge. After having their most lush and beautiful season, they faced the axe of a hard-working lawn man who trimmed every bush, chopping them to stubs. I cried. Then, three years laterafter barren branches, a bout of powdery mildew, and my faithless plan to dig them upour long-suffering lilacs rebounded. They just needed time, and I simply needed to wait for what I couldnt see.

Message: Our Daily Bread Devotional 27 March 2022

When Abraham Lincoln became president of the United States, he was tasked with leading a fractured nation. Lincoln is viewed as a wise leader and a man of high moral character, but another element to his makeup, perhaps, was the foundation for everything else. He understood that he was inadequate for the task at hand. His response to that inadequacy? Lincoln said, I have been driven many times upon my knees by the overwhelming conviction that I had nowhere else to go. My own wisdom and that of all about me seemed insufficient for that day.

When we come to grips with the massive nature of lifes challenges and the severe limitations of our own wisdom, knowledge, or strength, we find, like Lincoln, that we are utterly dependent on Jesusthe One who has no limitations. Peter reminded us of this dependency when he wrote, Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you .

Gods love for His children, paired with His absolute power, make Him the perfect Person to approach with our frailtiesand thats the essence of prayer. We go to Jesus acknowledging to Him that were inadequate and Hes eternally sufficient. Lincoln said he felt he had nowhere else to go. But when we begin to comprehend Gods great care for us, thats wonderfully good news. We can go to Him!

Love The App When It Works

OUR DAILY BREAD DEVOTIONAL FOR MONDAY 18TH JULY 2022  UNWANTED GUEST ...

Ok, this is really getting annoying! When the app received its newest update version the app would not open! Realize everyone that updated to the new version was also experiencing the same thing! Wrote a review and the developers advised to delete the app. Once that was done the app worked. Now as of April 1, 2021 the app is blank for todays reading, and when you click on the month it opens and the spinning wheel just continues to spin like its trying to open! VERY FRUSTRATING!!!! I thought it was a April fool joke but this is getting annoying because the next day its the same! Someone on the develop team is/has been slacking on working out the quirks to this app!!! And other main issue is when the new version was updated you all took away the motivation count of how many days being read! This was a cool feature and very motivating!! WHY?!??! Not liking none of this. And when mentioned about the day count on my last review complaint, the developers only address the crashing of the new version, and failed to mentioned about the day count. Could address that as well please?!?!?!? God bless!!!

A couple who stopped to admire a large abstract painting noticed open paint cans and brushes underneath it. Assuming it was a work in progress that anyone could help create, they stroked in some color and left. The artist, though, had purposefully left the supplies there as part of the finished works display. After reviewing video footage of the incident, the gallery acknowledged the misunderstanding and didnt press charges.

The Israelites who lived east of the Jordan created a misunderstanding when they built a massive altar next to the river. The western tribes viewed this as rebellion against Godeveryone knew the tabernacle was the only God-approved place for worship .

Tensions mounted until the eastern tribes explained that they only meant to make a replica of Gods altar. They wanted their descendants to see it and recognize their spiritual and ancestral connection with the rest of Israel . They exclaimed: The Mighty One, God, the Lord! He knows! . Thankfully, the others listened. They saw what was going on, praised God, and returned home.

Insight

The central picture in Revelation 5 is the moving image of a slain yet living Lamb worshiped by all creation . Gods people had long looked for the prophesied Messiah, the Lion of Judah to powerfully deliver them. Most assumed this Messiah, much like a lion, would conquer through force and vengeful violence. Instead, the Messiah, the Lion of Judah, was revealed to be a gentle Lamb, willing to give everything, even His own life, for the salvation of others. Its only that Lamb who is found worthy to establish Gods justice and bring history to its long-awaited goal.

Message : A commercial jingle of the 1970s inspired a generation. Created as part of Coca Colas The Real Thing ad campaign, a British group called The New Seekers eventually sang it as a full-length song that climbed to the top of music charts around the world. But many will never forget the original television version sung by young people on a hilltop outside of Rome. Whimsical as it was, with visions of honeybees and fruit trees, we resonated with a songwriters desire to teach the world to sing with the heart and harmony of love.

Yet this is what it took for the Lamb of God to bear our sin and defeat death, overcome our fear of death, and teach all heaven and earth to singin perfect harmony.

A yoke, a wooden harness that joins two animals , is meant to lighten their heavy burden. The prophet Jeremiah used the yoke as a metaphor for Gods laws and a symbol of political submission and enslavement . The Jewish rabbis later used this metaphor to mean obedience to the law. The Jews at the time of Jesus were enslaved by the heavy yoke of legalistic Judaism that their teachers of the law had strenuously piled on them .

The book of 2 Peter begins and ends on a similar note, highlighting the words grace and knowledge: Grace and peace be yours in abundance through the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord Grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ . The word grace appears in the book only in these two verses however, the word knowledge appears seven times in the book using two different Greek words.

The word knowledge in 2 Peter 3:18 is gnsis . Such information about God is crucial for our growth and development in our life in Christ. The word used in 1:2 is epignsis. The sea squirt is a strange creature. Found attached to rocks and shells, it looks like a soft plastic tube waving with the current. Drawing its nutrients from the passing water, it lives a passive life far removed from its onceactive youth.

The sea squirt starts life as a tadpole with a primitive spinal cord and brain that helps it find food and avoid harm. As a juvenile, it spends its days exploring the ocean, but something happens when it reaches adulthood. Settling on its rock, it stops exploring and growing. In a macabre twist, it digests its own brain.

Reflect: What character trait do you feel God calling you to grow in? What service opportunity is He leading you to try?
