Tips For Cooking With A Pie Iron:

Rome’s Double Pie Iron Review For Bugging In Or On The Go
  • When cooking with a camp cooker for the first time, begin by applying non stick cooking spray, olive oil or butter to the inside of both cooking plates. This step is important so that your delicious meal doesnt stick to the plates and burn.
  • Place your recipe ingredients into the cooker before closing and latching it.
  • Cook the recipe over an open fire. We recommend placing the cooker over the fire for two minutes before unlatching, checking for doneness and flipping the cooker over to cook the other side.
  • Use caution when handling both the metal latch and handles as they can become hot while cooking.

Pie Iron Spaghetti

Pie Irons + Cast Iron

Creating campfire memories for over 50 years.

Way back in 1964, we began making an item which has been enhancing gatherings around the campfire for generations. Pie Iron cooking is outdoor campfire fun at its essence. So simple to use, yet so delicious and versatile. Just take 2 slices of bread, fill with jam, cheese, meat, etc. Place inside the cooking cavity and close. Hold over the fire for a few minutes and you have a wonderful toasted treat.

Here at Rome we live and breath pie iron cooking and you’ll find that passion in the attention to detail and quality of our products as well as the innovation and wide variety of designs that we’ve introduced in our long history.

All Rome pie irons are cast in iron using traditional sand molds which are still poured one at a time. The natural iron leaves the factory with a thin layer of paraffin wax to protect the product from oxidation. When you receive your Rome pie iron, you should remove the paraffin either by melting it off in the fire or scoured with hot soapy water. Dry completely after cleaning and season your iron with oil. Seasoning tips here.

What Can You Make In A Pie Iron

Most people use their pie irons to make pressed sandwiches, but theres no limit to what ingredients you can toss in these fire-ready cookers. Most recipes call for some kind of starchy crust, such as bread, pizza dough, tortillas, cookie dough, or batter. Cheese, meats, preserved fruits, jellies, and chocolate are just a few popular fillers options. Very few ingredients are off-limits!

How To Clean And Care For A Pie Iron

Youll need to season your cast iron pie iron before use. Do this by washing off any protective wax covering your new pie iron. Then, coat the press with oil and heat over medium to high heat for 15 minutes.

Cool the cast iron before oiling and heating it a second time. After the second seasoning, your pie iron will be ready for cooking. Once seasoned, clean your cast iron as you would any other cast iron cookware.

S For Spring Cleaning The Pie Irons

The steps are almost the same as cleaning the ones with burnt food bits, except I start with a bucket of soapy water and I usually do all of the pie irons at once.

  • Soak pie irons in bucket of hot, soapy water for 5-10 minutes. I do this outside, not in the kitchen or camper kitchen sink. The outside of pie irons are always sooty and make a huge mess! I use dish soap and a rag that gets thrown away when I am finished.
  • Scrub the inside and the outside of the pie irons, using a scrub brush or even steel wool when necessary to remove any rust. The outside soot will not come all the way off, so dont set it on your leg to scrub- you will end up with permanently sooty, camper jeans.
  • Rinse with hot water.
  • Dry thoroughly over coals or a fire.
  • Carefully!! Add a small, nickel size, amount of oil to each warm/hot pie iron half. I use canola or vegetable oil.
  • Wipe the inside of each pie iron half with a paper towel, so it is coated with oil-be careful, they are still hot and the oil is getting hot too.
  • Reheat over the coals or fire for a few minutes to set the oil coating. Dont super heat the pie irons or cause the oil to smoke. But, if it does start to smoke and form little dots of oil on the pie iron-take it off the fire, let it cool a bit and redistribute the oil by wiping it again with a paper towel-carefully, since its probably still hot!

How To Use A Pie Iron

Pie irons are designed for campfire cooking. Whether youre having a safe cookout in your back yard or youve escaped city life for a back-to-nature vacation in the woods, pie irons are perfect for warming up and/or cooking your breakfast, lunch, and dinner over a fire.

When using a pie iron, you first want to heat each half over an open fire. You want it to be warm when you add your sandwich or other food for cooking, but you dont want it to be so hot that your bread or dough will burn. Usually, about 5 minutes in a hot fire is perfect.

Set one half on a burn resistant surface and coat the inside pocket with a small amount of oil. Spray oils are very convenient for this. Campfires are difficult to temperature regulate, so use an oil with a high smoke point, like grapeseed or avocado oil.

Place your bread or dough along the bottom and fill with any fillings you want inside your pie. Once filled, top with another piece of bread or dough.

Spray or coat the top of the iron with a bit of oil and close the iron, using the fastener at the lower end of the handles to close it together tightly.

Place the pie iron on a bed of hot, flat coals. It doesnt have to be directly in the fire if the iron is already warmed.

Depending on your filling, youll need about 25 minutes per side. Check after about 2 minutes per side. Its cooked when its golden brown.

How To Select The Best Pie Iron

Are you still wondering what to look for when selecting your pie irons? Weve got you covered!

MaterialMost cast irons are made from cast iron or aluminum. Cast iron is a popular choice as it is virtually indestructible. These cookers tend to be quite heavy. However, theyre strong enough to be placed directly over hot coals. Keep in mind that cast iron cookers need to be seasoned. Opt for a pre-seasoned option or prepare to do some initial maintenance.

Aluminum pie irons are a popular alternative. While these cookers are hardly as durable as the cast iron alternatives, they do pose a weight advantage. If youre looking to hoover your cooker over an open flame, the aluminum irons are going to be far more tolerable.

Size/ShapePie irons come with varying capacities. Traditional pans are designed to hold a standard-sized square sandwich. However, many manufacturers have produced cookers that can cook two separate sandwiches. Weve also seen circular and heart-shaped presses. Shape and size are usually a matter of personal preference.

HandlesThe pie iron cooking heads are attached to long metal rods. These need to be sturdy enough to support the heavy cooking heads and all of your ingredients. The support rod ends must be mounted securely to the base of the cooking heads. There may even be a small S-hook attached to the bottom of the rods. It can be clamped over the alternative rod to tighten the tension between the cooking heads.

What Is The Best Pie Iron

If youre searching for a pie iron to buy, choose one made of cast iron which is durable and evenly heats food. A quality pie iron has a long handle with a heatproof grip that makes it easy to flip during cooking. Look for a pie iron with a clasp toward the handle that allows you to lock the iron closed. This clasp also allows you to easily check on food while cooking.

If youre cooking for a large group or family, consider a double pie iron, or purchase several irons to cook your food more quickly.

    How Do You Clean It

To make cleanup a breeze, I recommend using a scrubber set made for cast iron cookware. Just make certain you allow your pie irons to cool thoroughly before attempting to clean. Just fill your sink or camp wash basin with hot water and allow your pie iron to soak to loosen any stuck-on food, charcoal and ash.

After about 10-15 minutes, use your scrubber set to scrub off any remnants and grime. Finally, give them a good rinse with hot water. Finally, rub a little shortening inside your cast iron pie iron halves to preserve and keep them from rusting.

And, to help make cleanup even easier, you can use parchment paper instead of using nonstick spray.

Mix basic white vinegar with water in equal parts and submerge your pan in it. Use a bucket or plug the sink for really big pans the entire skillet should be covered with the vinegar mixture.
