Grand Traverse Pie Company: 24 years of celebrating the holidays with Michigan-made pie

Grand Traverse Pie Company

Ask any regular visitor to Grand Traverse County for a quintessential Michigan experience, and theyll likely send you to Grand Traverse Pie Company for pie.

Michigan produces bountiful crops of cherries, berries, and apples, but it took two homesick Michigan State alums to turn those crops into pie for the masses.

Grand Traverse Pie Company founders Mike and Denise Busley grew up in Michigan and moved to California after graduating from college to pursue careers in engineering and business, respectively. By the mid 90s, however, they had two children and were feeling the pull of home.

We asked ourselves how we could make a living in Traverse City, Busley says. We were surprised no one was doing pie like this, and that told us it was either not an opportunity or it was an awesome opportunity.

Twenty years and 16 locations later, the verdict is in. It was an opportunity.

Most people approach pie as a passion, but we approached it as, Can we create a pie shop thats efficient, high quality, and scalable? he says.

The first location opened in 1996, and a second was added in 1999, both of them serving pie only.

We could see what Panera had donebasing a bakery-café concept on breadand we saw that we could evolve into a concept where people had reasons to come in every day, too, Busley says.

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore was named The Most Beautiful Place in America in 2011. With good reason. Its a pristine wilderness of sand, water and wood. Theres so much to see and do with its miles of beach and trails.

Climbing the sand dunes that rise 450 feet above Lake Michigan is an absolute must if youre visiting the area. You can climb at far as you want. It takes three to four hours to make it all the way to the top where youll see Lake Michigan span out in front of you. Its tiring, but rewarding.

If you dont want to climb all the way to the top of a dune to see Lake Michigan, dont worry. There are beaches in the park you can access without a long trek or climb. Glen Haven Beach is one of my favorite Lake Michigan beaches in the park. While youre there, you can also tour the old beach-side town of Glen Haven.

Lake Michigan can be pretty cold. If you want to swim, and prefer warmer water, try inland North Bar Lake. With its shallow, sandy bottom its especially perfect for families with young children. There are 20 other inland lakes inside the park, and many allow fishing and some boating. Check with a park ranger to be sure of the rules and restrictions.

While youre at the park, you can also take a ferry to a remote lighthouse on South Manitou Island, paddle the Platte River or bike the Heritage Trail. The trail is a 22 mile non-motorized path that runs through the park.

Thank you for taking the time to leave a 5 star review. So happy to hear that you enjoyed our pies!

We live in the area and have been to 5 or 6 different locations. All have a high standard of cleanliness and excellent food. The Coconut Cream Pie is the standard by which all other Coconut Pies are judged! Unfortunately this particular location gets a…FAIL. We normally eat at the WEST Front Street location but have twice tried this location, once was earlier this summer and again this Halloween. The Coconut Cream Pie was substandard. Mealy and not as flavorful. Really a huge disappointment when compared to the normal top quality we receive at the other location. We did not post a negative review the first time but now that we have had two in a row…….. Such a bummer. Still gets a two for cleanliness and friendly, knowledgable staff.More

Grand Traverse Pie Company Kentwood

#7Restaurants in KentwoodHow have I never eaten here before?

I’ve lived in Grand Rapids for almost twenty years and had never eaten here before. We stopped in for lunch during a day of shopping and I was very impressed. It was a Monday, and a little after the normal lunch hour, but the restaurant…was almost empty. I had the three piece combo with the quiche, a house salad, and a slice of pie. The quiche was a vegetarian kind and very yummy. The crust was especially buttery and flaky. The salad was not extraordinary, but it was the perfect side, and just the right size. Finally, I had the Mountain Berry pie, which was fantastic. It was warmed for a few seconds in the microwave before I had it, and I think I would get it a la mode if I ordered it again. The ice cream would provide a contrast to the very sweet berry filling and the crunchy topping. It was a very relaxing and comfortable place to have lunch and I would certainly go back.More
