Where To Find Some Of The Spices For This Recipe

APPLE PIE SPICE – MAKE YOUR OWN

While many of us live near well-stocked supermarkets, not all of us have the ability to readily go out and find some allspice berries.

I usually find allspice already ground in a small tin. Consider supporting your local Indian grocery or Chinese grocery store. They dont just sell an amazing variety of foods, but they also stock all kinds of spices endemic to their culture. Not only that, but they also tend to sell those spices at excellent prices!

How To Use Apple Pie Spice

I love throwing this blend into apple pie or even apple pie bars, but its also great in any dessert or breakfast that you want to add a little bit of warmth and depth to.

Think crock pot applesauce, oatmeal, apple muffins, apple pancakes and so much more!

I like to store my spice blends in Weck jars or small mason jars, but really, any jar or bottle will do. You can even wash, dry and reuse old spice jars, making it even more economical!

If youre crafty, I think a cute label and a little twine could make this homemade mix the perfect little gift for fall. Couple the spice blend with a basket of freshly picked apples and you have a great holiday gift for neighbors, co-workers, friends and family.

Is Apple Pie Spice The Same As Pumpkin Pie Spice

Not exactly. Apple spice is the same as pumpkin pie spice with one exception. It doesnt have any cloves in it like the pumpkin version.

Pumpkin pie spice has the basic four spices but has cloves instead of allspice.

The addition of the cloves is what really makes the difference as cloves have such a unique and potent aroma and flavor.

This is an example of why I love to make my own spice mixes. With so many spices to use, and the unique qualities, controlling the levels of each makes them easy to be liked by everyone.

I prefer less cloves altogether so I can leave them out of both, but I also prefer a little less cinnamon due to a personal sensitivity.

How Long To Store

Store this apple spice for up to a year. Or you will look at each spice to ensure the expiration date, and then use the closest expiration date if it is less than a year out.

For example if nutmeg expires in 6 months, then you would want to toss this all out in 6 months, since that spice is the first to expire.

How To Toast Whole Spices

Whole spices also allow you to amplify the flavor by toasting your spices. Put the whole spices in a dry pan set over low heat, and cook them, swirling the pan every few seconds to prevent burning.

This will activate lots of delicious aromatic compounds, making the spices taste even better. Allow them to cool for a few minutes before grinding them up to let the compounds reabsorb into the spices, and you will end up with a tastier, much more intensely flavored spice blend.

Homemade Apple Pie Spice Blend

I noticed at the market today the size of the spice jar offered for apple pie spice was rather small. Like, seriously, making apple french toast for the family once would wipe out the majority of it. I hadn’t made my own in a few years, but the scant container motivated me to make a batch of the homemade spice blend I’ve enjoyed so much in the past.

Now you can make it too, or even double up and give a jar to a friend who enjoys spice blends. If you take a trip to the orchard, you definitely need some of this spice recipe waiting for you when you get home with all those apples.

Make The Apple Pie Spice Blend Your Own

If you prefer one spice over the others, feel free to experiment with your apple pie spice recipe. Adjust the ratios to ensure youre hitting your favorite flavor combo, and if youre interested in introducing other spices into the mix, consider adjusting the recipe as follows:

Infuse it with ginger

Ginger has a very distinct taste that can elevate your bake. Add 1/2 teaspoon to your apple pie spice to add a flowery note.

Add a hint of cloves

Cloves are incredibly powerfulone whiff and youll be transported to the holiday season. Use this spice lightly it can easily overpower your blend. Add 1/8 teaspoon to the recipe above for a powerful kick.

Sprinkle in some cardamom

Cardamom is not as aromatic as cinnamon, but it still packs a flavorful punch. Its a milder spice that can still bring a lot to the table, adding a slightly earthy taste to your blend. Add 1/2 to 1 teaspoon to your blend, depending on your taste.

What Is The Difference Between Pumpkin Pie Spice And Apple Pie Spice

Both of these spice mixes have cinnamon as the main ingredient. But the second most prominent ingredient in pumpkin pie spice is ginger which gives it a sweet and woody characteristic whereas the second most prominent ingredient in apple pie spice is nutmeg which gives it a sharper, more astringent note.

What Is In Apple Pie Spice

Im pretty much a self-professed spice hoarder, so Penzeys makes almost as happy as Nordstrom does. Seriously, its pretty close.

So any time I stumble across a recipe that calls for a special spice blend, my first thought is if I have what I need to make it myself.

The answer to that is almost always yes. From pumpkin pie spice and chai spice blend to homemade taco seasoning, I have made plenty of my own spice blends over the years.

As soon as the air turns crisp and the leaves start to turn, I get into serious fall baking mode and often encounter recipes that call for apple pie spice.

But what really is apple pie spice?

Most of these blends include cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, allspice and cardamom. So thats what I used here!

Love cardamom? Add a little more in. I promise you really cant mess it up!

How To Store Homemade Spice Mixes

I love making homemade seasoning mixes year round. With a spice cabinet as stocked as mine it only makes sense to mix them together myself, since I usually already have all the individual ingredients on hand.

Its also super economical. For some reason ready mixed spices are always more expensive than the sum of their individual ingredients.

I am a master at recycling glass jars. So whenever I have an empty spice jar it gets shelved until I make my next spice mix.

If you dont have spice jars handy, any small container that seals airtight works for storing your apple pie spice blend. Small jelly jars also work great and they look fantastic if you want to give this apple spice seasoning to someone as a homemade gift.

This post has been a long time coming and I apologize for the delay. Ive been meaning to post this since my amazingly simple and crazy delicious Apple Pie Bites have been the most popular recipe on the blog for over a year now. So many people have asked, What is apple pie spice?.

Well, its actually quite simple to make. I did a lot of research online and saw that it always included allspice, nutmeg and cinnamon. Sometimes ground ginger was added, and a lot of times cardamom was added. I read the ingredients on the back of my apple pie spice container and cardamom was not mentioned in the ingredient list. I still wanted to buy a bottle of cardamom just to see if it made it taste any better. Cardamom was almost $15 for a small bottle!

Never mind. Besides, Ive never used it in any recipes , anyway!

So I started playing around with the ingredients until I got it to taste pretty much exactly like my purchased bottle of apple pie spice no cardamom needed!

So, if youre making these Easy Apple Pie Bites or any recipe that calls for apple pie spice, heres your easy recipe!

  • 11/2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
  • 11/2 teaspoons ground nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon allspice
