Easy Gluten Free Pastry Crust
After that I started experimenting with different gluten-free pie dough recipes, determined to find a version that could stand up to my moms. However, most of the GF crusts I tried called for a million ingredients and tasted way too strongwhile I adore grain, nut and seed flours, when it comes to pie, I want the buttery, subtly sweet, let-the-fruit-shine crust that I had as a kid.
Wholly Wholesome Organic Traditional
Wholly Wholesome is a natural foods brand available throughout the U.S. at Whole Foods and grocery stores that carry natural food brands.
- 7 oz each
- $5.99 for a package of 2
- Frozen in aluminum pie tin
- Flour, palm oil, water, cane sugar, sea salt
Tasting notes: Good taste, right amount of salt and sugar, tender and flaky, can keep eating
Structure notes: Did not crack or break with pre-baking. When baked with a pumpkin pie filling, it held up well. No soggy crust. Even though it is a deep dish pie crust, it doesn’t hold as much filling as my homemade pie crust, so when I cooked up a pumpkin pie with it, I had about a cup of leftover filling.
RECOMMEND. I would use this pie crust. The taste is good. I kept nibbling on the crusts I blind baked for this test. The crust holds up well for both blind-baking and baking with a pie. Would be good for a sweet pie or a savory pie such as a quiche.

What Types Of Fillings Can I Add To This Gluten Free Crust
You can add a wide variety of fillings to this gluten free crust, no matter whether they require baking or not. If adding a no bake filling, simply prepare it as you would normally and pour it into your cooled baked crust.
If you are adding a filling that requires baking, you still shouldnt add it until after your crust is baked and cooled. However, you will be returning the crust to the oven with the filling to bake until set. The filling should be enough to cushion the crust from the heat of the oven, but feel free to cover the edges with foil or a crust protector shield if they are starting to turn too dark.
One of my favourite fillings for this chocolate crust is the vegan peanut butter pie filling in this keto peanut butter pie recipe. It is incredibly delicious with PB2 Powder, coconut cream, and vanilla, and is a great example of an unbaked filling that pairs perfectly with this gluten free chocolate crust.
If desired, you could fill this gluten free crust with your favourite pumpkin pie mixture for a dish perfect for Thanksgiving or Halloween. You could even add bright and zingy lemon curd and meringue for a chocolaty take on lemon meringue pie. It would also be excellent for a chocolate cream pie base involving vegan chocolate pudding and coconut whipped cream with gluten free chocolate shavings.

Before cookie season comes pie season. That means that we need light and extra flaky gluten free pie crust, and plenty of it. Actually, pie season is really any season. In the summertime, we make pies with summer berries and stone fruits. In the fall and winter, its all about apple pie, and maybe a pecan pie or two.
For years and years , Id used this gluten free pie crust recipe almost exclusively for single and double crust pies alike. And its still one of my favorites. But this extra flaky gluten free pie crust?
This perfect pie crust is giving my regular, go-to gluten free pie crust a run for its money. It rolls out so beautifully and is just effortlessly flaky. Like all pastry-baking, you just have to be sure to keep everything cold cold cold while youre working with it.

How Does It Taste
Though I have strong opinions about pizza and its crust content, I also love eating pizza, maybe too much, and realized perhaps this was a way to have it more often without feeling guilty about it. So I relented and took that first steper, biteinto experimental pizza crust. Whole Foods is my jam, so I thought I would give its own brand of 365 Cauliflower Pizza Crust a try. Its gluten-free, has half the sugar of traditional crusts, and is packed with vitamin C. My pizza oven was ready to be fired up.
So when I pulled this pie crust out of its packaging, I was surprised to find it softer than I had expected, something I took to be a good sign. I had this idea of cauliflower crusts having the crunchiness of hardtack. The instructions were simple: remove from packaging, bake for 6-8 minutes, voila. So I lightly lathered its surface with tomato sauce, and proceeded to top it with a proportionate amount of mozzarella, a sprinkle of parmesan, and some basil, and let it do its thing.

I tossed the za in at 425 degrees for a good 6-8 minutes then pulled it out. Slice by slice, I was in awe of its pliancy. In one bite, then two, then six, cauliflower pizza crust gained one serious new fan.

- Frozen in aluminum pie tin
- Brown rice flour, water, organic palm oil, organic cane sugar, tapioca starch, potato starch, sea salt, baking powder, baking soda, monocalcium phosphate, guar gum
Tasting notes: Buttery in flavor, flaky, delicious, hard to believe that it is gluten-free.
Structure notes: A little bit of shrinkage with pre-baking, as expected, crust held pumpkin pie perfectly well.
RECOMMEND. When I first reviewed the Wholly Wholesome Gluten-free crust in 2017, I gave it a very poor rating it tasted bad and fell apart. Since then, the company has reworked their recipe and now I can wholeheartedly recommend this crust if you are looking for a gluten-free option. The crust is delicious and you would be hard pressed to tell the difference between it and a regular flour crust.
