Shepherd’s Pie Recipe | How to Make Perfect Shepherd’s Pie

Shepherds Pie is also called cottage pie and is usually made with lamb or ground beef, an assortment of vegetables and then topped with mashed potato. Sometimes a layer of grated cheese is sprinkled over the mashed potatoes and baked.

My gram loved the Betty Crocker Brand with Butter. Side note if you need the perfect baking dish, my mom swears by her clear Pyrex baking dishes . They come in a set of two different sizes which is nice!

We have a few diabetics in our family so sweet potatoes are better vs regular and we also use ground turkey when we make the sweet potato version. It actually tastes delicious and is a nice change from traditional pie.

How To Make Classic Shepherds Pie

Preheat oven to 375°. Set out milk to bring to room temperature.

Peel and cube potatoes. Place potatoes and garlic cloves in large pot and cover with water. Bring to a boil and cook until potatoes are fork tender.

Drain out water in a colander. Return to pot, add butter, milk, and salt and pepper to taste. Mash potatoes and mix together ingredients. Note: Sometimes you may not need all of the milk, go off the consistency while mixing.

Stir in ½ cup of shredded cheese.

While potatoes are boiling, brown the ground meat. I love using my Pampered Chef Mix N Chop when browning ground meat. It crumbles meat perfectly. Once browned, add onion, garlic, and seasonings.

When onion is tender, mix in flour and cook for one minute.

Stir in ketchup, Worcestershire, mixed veggies, and beef broth. Simmer for 5 minutes.

Use an 8×8 or 9×13 dish like this, spoon in meat mixture and spread over bottom. Spoon mashed potatoes on top of meat mixture. Carefully spread evenly.

Top with remaining cup of shredded cheese and bake uncovered for 20 minutes or until cheese is melted.

Tips: Setting out milk for the mashed potatoes should help eliminate any lumps when mixing mashed potatoes. Also, I use my hand mixer when making mashed potatoes, it mashes and mixes everything quickly. Turn on broiler to brown cheese topping if you want for a few minutes.

I wish I could mix in bacon somehow in this recipe but due to allergies cannot. So you could totally do it if you would like. WORST FOOD ALLERGY EVER!

How Long To Boil Eggs For Deviled Eggs:

  • Fill a large pot 3/4 full of water.
  • Place the pot over high heat until the water comes to a rolling boil. This can take between 7-12 minutes, depending on the size of your pot and how much water you use. To speed things up, I use hot tap water and keep the lid on the pot until the water is boiling.
  • Carefully and gently add the desired amount of large eggs to the boiling water. A mesh strainer works well for gently lowering more than one egg at a time into the hot water.
  • Boil the eggs for 13-14 minutes. Adjust the heat as necessary so that the water doesnt boil over.
  • Remove the pot from the heat. Drain the hot water from the pot while keeping the eggs in the pot. You could use the lid of the pot or a strainer to help keep the eggs in the pot as you drain the hot water.
  • Add cold water to the pot until the eggs are covered in cold water. Pour that water out. Repeat with more cold water.
  • Add 2 cups of ice to the pot. Gently stir the eggs. If the ice melts, add more until the water stays ice cold.
  • Let the eggs rest in the ice cold water for 5 minutes.
  • Remove the eggs from the cold water. Store in the refrigerator for up to a week until you are ready to use them.
  • Gently crack the egg shells and peel the eggs.

For The Healthy Turkey Or Chicken Shepherds Pie Filling

  • Ground Turkey or Chicken Breast or even extra lean beef or lamb
  • Olive Oil for frying
  • Garlic
  • All the vegetables: Celery, Carrots, Bell Peppers and Frozen Peas
  • A good low sodium sauce I used Mr Spices Garlic Steak. The BBQ sauce is really good too
  • Vegetable or Chicken Broth Low sodium here too
  • Salt and Pepper to season
  • Cayenne Pepper for some heat

When ready to bake, preheat the oven to 350º, remove the wrap from the dish and bake until heated throughout, about 25 30 minutes.

How To Make Shepherds Pie In A Dutch Oven

  • Heat olive oil in a Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Add the beef, onion, garlic, salt and pepper, and cook for about 5 minutes, or just until the beef has browned.
  • Add the broth, carrots, peas, corn, celery, oregano and thyme. Stir and cook on medium heat, uncovered, for 3 to 5 minutes, just until softened. Reduce heat to medium-low. In a small bowl, combine flour and water until well blended, then pour over the filling in the dutch oven. Stir together. Reduce heat to low, and cover.
  • Preheat oven to 350°F, and then make the mashed potato topping.

Mashed Potato Topping

  • Add potatoes to a large pot and cover with water. Bring to a boil, and boil until potatoes are fork tender, about 12-13 minutes. Drain potatoes and return to the pot.
  • Add the butter and mash potatoes until smooth. Add salt and pepper to taste.

Assemble and Bake

  • Remove the Dutch oven with the filling from the heat, and top with the mashed potatoes, smoothing into an even topping layer.
  • Bake, uncovered, at 350° F for about 30 minutes. To create a slightly browned, slightly crisp top, turn on the broiler at the end of the 30 minutes and broil for about 5 minutes. Watch the oven to make sure the top doesnt burn. Serve immediately.

When my gram was alive, she would always say, Shepherds Pie is a staple kind of food. She said she made it all the time when her kids were little because it was affordable and filled them up.

    My Easy Shepherds Pie

    To make my Shepherds Pie, I start by peeling and cubing my potatoes to make the mashed potato topping. I cook them potatoes in just enough water to cover them completely, plus about an inch in a heavy bottomed sauce pan or Dutch oven set over medium heat. I melt my butter in a saucepan and then add in my half and half. Youll heat your butter and half and half until just simmering, making sure not to allow it to overheat or curdle.

    Once they have become fork tender, about 15 to 20 minutes, I drain them well and then add them back into the Dutch oven. I mash them using a potato masher until smooth and then slowly stir in my warmed half and half and butter and continue to mash until creamy. If you are including roasted garlic or the cheddar cheese , then stir that into your mashed potatoes at this point along with your salt and pepper. In a pinch, you can also use Stone House Seasoning if you are short on time for roasting your garlic. It works like a charm!

    Meanwhile, you will also want to be preparing the meat filling for your Shepherds Pie.

    Top your meat filling with the mashed potato topping. Top with pieces of butter and bake for 15 minutes. Remove from the oven and allow to rest for about 5 minutes before serving.
