Vegan Gluten Free Apple Crumb Pie Recipe

I tested this dairy free gluten free apple pie recipe last week and I was surprised how good a vegan gluten free apple pie can actually taste.

Even though its not the type of pie I was used to when I was a child, now this gluten free apple pie is one of my favorite pies. I was looking for a while to make a gluten free pie crust that was more like eating the real deal.

How To Decorate Your Pie

We chose to weave a lattice to top the apple pie because, first of all, it looks pretty. We also wanted to show that it can be done with a gluten-free crust! If you do want a lattice, its easier with this crust if you use bigger strips of pastry. Also, make sure the pastry is cold while youre working with it so its easier to work with. When in doubt, stick it in the fridge for 10 minutes!

If you dont want to mess with the lattice, no problem! Its totally not necessary. You can simply place a rolled-out crust on top of the pie with a few slits for the steam to escape. As-is is totally fine, but feel free to decorate that further with a few designs from stamps or apple cuts.

You really cant go wrong. No matter how you choose to decorate or not decorate your pie, its going to taste delicious!

For The Crumb Topping:

Recipe Step By Step Directions:

Step 1: Preheat the oven to 350º F. Add your dry ingredients to a large bowl and whisk to blend.

Step 2: Add cold butter and use a pastry blender to cut in the butter. When you are done, your flour mixture should look like it has a lot of crumbles.

Step 3: Add the wet ingredients to a bowl and mix well.

Step 4: Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix into a pie crust dough ball.

Step 5: Split the big dough ball in half and place it on flour-dusted wax paper.

Step 6: Roll each crust to a circle shape. I rolled mine to around ¼ inch thickness.

Step 7: In a bowl add your apple slices, sugar, cinnamon, lemon juice, and melted butter. Mix well to coat all of the apples.

Step 8: Place the bottom crust into the pie tin. Gently press it to the pie tin. Pour the apples inside and arrange them so they are evenly distributed.

Now it is time to make a lattice top crust. Don’t worry, I will walk you through it. I also have a video below to show you how!

Step 9: Use a pizza wheel or sharp knife to cut strips in that second rolled pie crust.

Step 10: Add strips of crust in one direction. To weave the crust, add a strip in the opposite direction, one at a time. Weave that in and out of the base strips of crust.

Next Youll Be Making The Streusel Topping:

To make the streusel topping add the brown sugar, buttery spread, and gluten-free flour to a medium-sized bowl and use a pastry cutter or two forks to combine the topping ingredients together until its mixed and crumbly.

You want your streusel topping to look like this. No worries if the crumbles are even.

Remove the chilled pie crust from the refrigerator and pour the apple filling into it and smooth out the filling leaving it a little higher in the center.

Next, pour the streusel topping over the apples and spread it out evenly. Then sprinkle the tablespoon of sugar over the top.

Assemble And Bake The Pie:

Step 1: Now roll out the second piece of dough, following the instructions above.

Step 2: Remove the pie dish from the refrigerator and add in the apple filling. Gently place the second piece of pie dough over the filling, then fold the extra dough from the top underneath itself to form a thick rim.

Step 3: Flute the edges to seal or press with a fork. Use a sharp knife to cut 4 slits in the top of the crust, then brush the crust with the beaten egg white. Sprinkle a tablespoon of sugar on top if desired.

Step 4: Finally, bake the pie for 20 minutes at 400°F, then REDUCE the oven temperature to 375°F and bake for another 30 35 minutes until the crust is golden. If the crust is browning too quickly, feel free to loosely cover with aluminum foil while in the oven.

Remove your delicious gluten-free apple pie from the oven and let it cool for at least 1- 2 hours. Serve with whipped cream and ice cream. Enjoy!

How Is This Vegan Gluten Free Apple Crumb Pie Made

To make this gluten free vegan Dutch apple pie, you need 3 things: a crust, an apple filling and a nice crumbly topping. And Ill talk about how to layers all these into a flavorful.

I was tempted to use an egg because the crust being gluten free + vegan, the risk of getting a crumbly mess was high.

But I decided to use the traditional vegan egg made from ground flax seeds and water.

And I have to say that the look and the flavor of this gluten free pie crust was almost exactly the same as the traditional one, except its healthier.

Special Ingredients For Gluten

Gluten Free Apple Pie
  • Buttery Spread: The buttery spread that I use for this recipe is Smart Balance. Earth Balance could also be used. If you dont need this recipe to be dairy-free you can use real butter.
  • Gluten-Free Flour Mix: The all-purpose gluten-free flour mix that I use is Better Batter. It can be purchased on Amazon or the Better Batter website. Ive had consistently good results using this blend. If you use a different gluten-free flour mix be sure to it has xanthan gum if not add 1/4 teaspoon of xanthan gum per cup of flour.
  • Other gluten-free flour blends that are popular are Pillsbury Gluten-Free Flour and King Arthurs Gluten-Free Flour.
  • Apples: My favorite combination of apples to bake this pie with is Golden Delicious and Fuji. I used 4 of each. I tried a combo with Granny Smith apples but they just didnt seem to cook through enough and were still crunchy after baking.

You do need gluten-free oats + gluten-free oat flour, but the GF oats can be found in most grocery stores. And once youre done with this pie, you can use the oats up however you normally use oats instead of having a bag of gluten-free flour around.

Or you can make this gluten-free apple crisp, which also uses oats and oat flour. These healthy banana muffins also look fantastic!

Paleo Apple Pie Ingredients:

How to make a Gluten Free Dairy Free Brown Bag Apple Pie!
  • A boatload of apples fill this pie. Choose large, tart baking apples such as granny smith. The tangy flavor will give the pie depth, and large apples will be easier to process. If you must use sweeter or softer apples, use less maple syrup and more starch to absorb the juices.
  • Maple syrup adds sweetness and earthy flavor. I like a nice dark maple syrup here.
  • Starch of some sort helps firm up the filling. I/ve tested this with tapioca starch and cornstarch and both work. Arrowroot starch is similar to tapioca and would also work.
  • Lemon zestand juice brighten the flavors.
  • A touch of cinnamon adds that classic apple pie taste. I like my pie lightly spiced in order to really taste the apples, but feel free use more cinnamon if you prefer. You can also add other spices: ginger, cardamom, nutmeg, allspice cloves… do you!
  • Salt sharpens the flavors.
  • A bit of milk of some sort brushed over the top makes the crust pretty. I used canned full-fat coconut milk, but any milk or plant milk will work.
  • A bit of coarse sugar gives the top crust a bit of sparkle. You can use maple sugar to make this officially paleo if you like.
