Booboos Sweet Potato Pies Bring A Taste Of Home To Southern California
The Southern staple of sweet potato pie brings more to the table than pumpkin pie. And not just at Thanksgiving in San Diego.
The sign, Booboos Sweet Potato Pies, caught my eye at the farmers market. Humm, sweet potato pies in Southern California? My interest was piqued, and I decided to find out more. I spotted Thomas Crain, the smiling man inside the booth and stopped to talk with him about the pies.
He told me people are curious about this kind of pie because they dont know about it and wonder if its like pumpkin pie. People who do recognize it are usually from the South and eagerly buy some. They say it reminds them of home. Those unfamiliar with the pie are surprised about how good it tastes.
Starting a Business After Retirement
Thomas missed the sweet potato pie from his Texas roots and his wife Cynthia kept making different variations until she made it to his liking. Both are retired and decided to start Booboos since friends and family loved the pie. Thomas tells me it was time to share the goodness of the pie in Southern California and make people happy. They named the business Booboos after the loving name Cynthias grandchildren call her. Getting started required certain food and business licenses, which required a lot of research and leg work. The task of how to bake hundreds of pies, get supplies and where to sell had a few bumps in the road according to Thomas, but it did not deter them.

When Myrtle Jackson of Ms. Myrtles Bakery Shoppe died this fall, her family took the reins. The shop had always been a family business with Jacksons daughters and granddaughters, but Jackson was the pie baker and she was especially beloved for her sweet potato pie. The nine-inch, deep-dish Southern pumpkin pie with fresh pumpkin was a customer-demand pie we started last Thanksgiving, says Jacksons daughter Rosharon Cotton. And everyone loved it so much, they came back and got more for Christmas. But the world-famous, according to the bakery, sweet potato pie is still the star of the show. Whip The Cream And Serve
Up to 3 hours before serving, whip the cream on medium speed in the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the whisk attachment. When it starts to thicken, add the confectioners sugar. Continue to whip until it forms stiff peaks.
Before serving, slice the pie into wedges and top each slice with a dollop of whipped cream.
Roast And Mash The Sweet Potatoes
Many sweet potato pie recipes call for boiling the sweet potatoes but in this recipe they are roasted. Roasting takes a bit longer but is completely hands-off, and you dont have to worry about peeling or slicing them.
Simply poke the sweet potatoes with a fork five or six times and place them on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Roast until very tender, about 1 hour.
Let cool, then scoop the pulp out of the skin into a medium bowl. Using a potato masher or fork, mash until smooth.

The Sweet Potato Pie should be refrigerated at all times. For best results, the pie should be consumed within 3 days of purchase. Before serving, please remove from fridge and leave at room temperature for 30 minutes. Ideally you do not want your cream pie to sit at room temperature for longer than 1 hour.
- While you can freeze a cream pie, it is not recommended. The whipped cream and the custard are both best consumed when fresh.
