Madrid To St Jean Pied De Port

I’m looking for recommendations on the fastest and best way to get from Madrid to St. Jean Pied de Port. My son and I are walking the Camino de Santiago arriving in Madrid May 29 early morning. I’ve heard about the bus to Pamplona and have to figure out how to get the rest of the way. It all sounds very confusing.

Have you looked for a website about the Camino that will give you this information? A couple of people here have walked the Camino and have posted the URL of an informational website here. There is a forum here that might help:

Oh yes, I’ve read a lot of books and have looked at the forum often. I guess I keep hoping there is an easier way to get there then the grueling bus ride from Madrid to Pamplona and on and on. Perhaps there isn’t and it’s all part of the journey.

You don’t have to take a “grueling bus ride” from Madrid to Pamplona. There are trains that make the journey in 3 hours. One departs Atocha station at 11:35, which is probably bout right for a flight arriving early in the morning.

Thank you. I will look into this. Should I buy tickets ahead of time or do you think there are usually plenty of seats?

Oh, yes. I would very much appreciate any assistance on the bus from Pamplona to St. Jean. You are very kind to offer.

Best Mode Of Transportation Madrid To St

Hello everyone! My dad and I are flying International from the US into Madrid to do the entire Camino de Santiago in a few months. Once we fly into Madrid, we are trying to figure out the best means of transportation with the least amount of steps as possible. I did see a car service but that was quite expensive . It appear that flying from Madrid to Biarritz does not offer a direct flight and other than flying direct into Donostia-San Sebastian, I couldn’t find other flight options. Plus getting to St Jean from San Sebastian didn’t offer a clear cut solution.

I would appreciate any advice for routes and mode. Thanks everyone and safe travels!

This is one of those trips that will be a bit cumbersome no matter how you do it. My choice would probably be train to Pamplona and a coach from there to Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port.

I agree with Badger that if flying into Madrid, take the train from Madrids Atocha station to Pamplona, then take a bus the rest of the way . Depending on the train, getting to Pamplona will take between 3 and 4 hours. There are stops along the way and prices vary between 22 and 53. By taking this route, as the article linked by LIZinPA states is, youll be backtracking along the same route youll be hiking.

What To Pack For The Camino

My main tip here is not to pack too much unless youre planning to use a backpack delivery service than it doesnt matter and you can take the entire closet with you. Two essential things that you want to be good and comfortable are your shoes and your backpack. Make sure you wear your shoes before and your feet are used to them if you buy a new pair of shoes your chances of getting bad blisters are pretty high.

We have a detailed Camino packing post where you can find what to pack for the Camino for different seasons for men and women.
