Praline Topping Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. In large mixer bowl, beat hot sweet potatoes with margarine. Add sweetened condensed milk, spices, salt and vanilla beat until smooth. Stir in eggs. Pour into pastry shell. Bake 50 to 55 minutes or until center is set. Cool. Top cooled pie with Praline Topping. Serve warm.

Drain sweet potatoes of their juice. Place sweet potatoes in an 11-cup food processor. Add the rest of the ingredients, except heavy cream, to food processor. Process mixture until smooth. Using a pastry brush, brush heavy cream over the surface of the frozen pie shell. Spoon sweet potato mixture into pie crust smoothing the top over.

    There are a couple of different ways to prepare sweet potatoes for the pie. The method I use most often is baking. You can also use an air fryer which is a great way to make sweet potatoes.

    Bake In The Oven

    Heat oven to 425 degrees. Wash the sweet potatoes and poke several holes using a fork. Place potatoes on a baking sheet lined with foil or parchment paper. Bake for approximately 45 minutes until potatoes are tender. Scoop out cooked potato and place it in a bowl to cool.

    Boil

    Peel the sweet potatoes and cut into chunks. Add the potatoes to a large pot and cover with water. Bring the water up to a boil then reduce heat to a low boil and cook sweet potatoes for about 40 minutes until tender and cooked through. Drain and set aside to cool.

    How To Make Sweet Potato Pie

    • The first thing you need to do when making a pie is prepare the crust. We love homemade crust and you can find all of our tips on making the best pie crust. If youd like to take a shortcut, buy an unbaked refrigerated crust.
    • Fresh sweet potatoes vs. canned sweet potatoes. You can use either for this recipe. Fresh sweet potatoes will obviously mean a pie that tastes just a little bit fresher. If you choose fresh sweet potatoes, peel the potatoes, cut them in chunks, then boil them in water until they are soft. Drain the potatoes and mash until they are creamy. For canned potatoes, be sure to drain all of the liquid off of the potatoes before you mash them.
    • We like to use a hand mixer to blend the sweet potatoes and sugar together. This allows the potatoes to get completely mashed so your sweet potato pie is smooth.
    • Vanilla pudding and sweetened condensed milk both add to the flavor of this pie. You can use sugar free pudding mix if youd like!
    • How long to bake sweet potato pie? This pie will take about 40-50 minutes to bake. A knife inserted in the center of the pie should come out clean and the pie should seem mostly firm in the center.

    How To Cook Sweet Potatoes For Pie Filling

    I like using fresh sweet potatoes so in order to mash them you obviously have to cook them first. You can scrub and then cut the sweet potatoes into large chunks and boil until fork tender.

    Thoroughly drain the sweet potatoes and let cool enough to handle. The skins should come off easily.

    However, I prefer to roast them. To do this preheat your oven to 425°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper or foil for easy cleanup.

    Scrub the potatoes and dry. Use a sharp knife or fork to pierce each potato on all sides about 6 to 8 times. I just use a knife and pierce the four sides twice.

    Put in the oven and roast for 30 60 minutes depending on the size of the sweet potatoes. Remove from the oven and let cool enough so that you can handle them.

    The skins should come right off. Discard any hairy or brown parts.

    You may notice some oozing as in my pictures. This is totally normal and just some of the natural sugars in the sweet potatoes coming out.
