Does Key Lime Pie Need To Baked

The best key lime pie recipe ever | homemade crust

Yes, bake your key lime pie or it isn’t going to set up enough for you to slice it without running all over your dessert plate.

If you’re going to bake a key lime pie using egg yolks, condensed milk and key lime juice, the pie must be baked for at least 15 minutes at 350 F. I usually bake my pie for 20 minutes because I like a firmer filling.

Also, I have uncooked egg paranoia.

But yes, this pie, using the ingredients listed above, needs to baked or it isn’t going to set up enough for you to slice it.

There’s a recipe on Food and Wine that I’m not linking to here that uses all of these same ingredients as mine plus an egg that’s supposed to chill overnight in the fridge instead of being baked. However, the reviews are atrocious.

Have you seen key limes? They are teeny tiny. You have to squeeze about a dozen key limes to get a half up of juice needed for this pie.

Nellie and Joe’s key lime juice tastes great and it’s available everywhere, even Walmart and Target.

Should you refrigerate key lime pie?

Yes. Key Lime Pie contains egg yolks and condensed milk so I suggest storing it in your refrigerator.

How long can key lime pie sit out?

Don’t let the pie sit out at room temperature for more than two hours. Bacteria starts to develop between 40 F and 140 F.

  • In a large bowl, dissolve gelatin in boiling water. Let cool slightly. If you dont like lime use any flavor of jello with whatever low-fat yogurt you like.
  • Stir in yogurt with a wire whisk.
  • Fold in whipped topping with a wooden spoon or spatula.
  • Spread in graham cracker crust.
  • Refrigerate for at least 2 hours.
  • Slice the pie into 8 slices. Serving Size: 1 slice.

    • tip 2 If you like flaky pastry, use Betty Crocker pie crust mix to bake a single pastry crust in a 9-inch pie plate. Cool the baked crust, and add the Key lime filling in our Key lime pie recipe.
    • tip 3 Before serving your whipped topping Key lime pie, add a small lime slice or wedge to garnish each piece , if desired.

    Key Lime Pie is not at all well known here in South Africa but since I was first introduced to it about 10 years ago it has been one of my best delicious go to desserts and this recipe is particularly good! When I dont have any Cool Whip I replace it with fresh cream which is what I did for this recipe and it was very very yummy!

    This recipe tastes absolutely amazing with store bought whipped cream, however, it is ten times better when you make your own. Its also incredibly easy to make your own. It only requires 2 simple ingredients, you may already have on hand.

    Here is how you make it:

    • In a chilled metal bowl combine 2 cups of heavy whipping cream and two tablespoons of sugar.
    • Using an electric mixer, combine the ingredients until fully incorporated, and the whipped topping forms peaks.
    • Store in fridge until ready to serve, or use in recipe.

    What Youll Need To Make Key Lime Pie

    • Youll need 8 to 10 limes total for this recipe. Choose plump limes that give a little when you squeeze them they will be easier to juice. You should get about 2 tablespoons of juice from each lime. Be sure to zest the limes before you squeeze the juice from them, as its near impossible to do afterward.
    • Sweetened condensed milk is canned milk from which water has been removed, and sugar has been added. Be sure not to confuse it with evaporated milk, which is usually sold right alongside.
    • With no eggs, it may be hard to believe that this pie will set, but have faith it will.

    Classic Key Lime Pie Recipe From Scratch

    What is it about key lime that just screams summer and Florida? Oh, yeah, because its kind of a big deal here. Key lime pie has been the official state pie of Florida since 2006. Just a fun little useless fact for ya.

    My first time trying key lime pie was on our honeymoon in Key West many, many years ago. So of course when we were Exploring Key West in a Day last summer, I had to have more key lime pie!!!

    And now Im totally craving it againmaybe its time for another road trip? Ok, maybe not, so Ill just be in our kitchen making more of these No Bake Mini Key Lime Pies and these Key Lime Bars to satisfy my taste buds.

    The past few weeks have been crazy hot here, so I havent been baking as much as I usually do. Our air conditioner has a hard enough time keeping up when the temps outside are over 95 degrees, so I dont want to stress it out by adding more heat inside the house.
