Fray Bentos Steak and Kidney Pie Taste Test @Pie Recipes

The Fray Bentos brand is known for the manufacture and sale in the United Kingdom of a range of tinned meat pies such as steak and kidney and minced beef and onion. Since 2011, the brand in the UK has been owned by Baxters, who manufacture Fray Bentos products at their site at Fochabers in Scotland. In addition to meat pies, the range includes tinned meat puddings and tinned meatballs as well as microwaveable meat-based pasta and rice dishes.

The sales of Fray Bentos products, once a staple in the UK and some European countries, have declined in recent decades and, in 2011, it was reported that sales had been flat at around £30 million per year for the previous ten years. Tinned meat products, including Fray Bentos, now have a down-market image. According to the Financial Times, Fray Bentos products “may engender sneers” but they also have a “cult following” in the UK. Baxters describes Fray Bentos as “an iconic British brand”.

Campbell’s Soup Company manufactures and sells steak and kidney pies in Australia under the Fray Bentos brand name.

Tinned Steak And Kidney Pie

Ive been travelling overseas for the last five days. I really wanted to cook something for dinner, however, just before I took off for a meeting in Geneva, Id received an e-mail from a friend and she described an experience with tinned steak and kidney pie.

This friend is a dear person who Ive known for about eight years through social media. Weve not met in person, but she is a wonderful human who is dedicated to her children, partner, and her work.

The tinned steak and kidney pie is a Fray Bentos® pie and can be found in the supermarket aisles with other tinned meats like Spam and corned beef.

In my local Coles, its in aisle 7!

I figured a steak and kidney pie would be best eaten with some mashed potato. Given the convenience of the tinned pie, I went with ready and cook mashed potato.

To complete the triumvirate of convenience, I added some frozen vegetables which I quickly cooked in some boiling water.

As it turns out, my tiredness from jet lag was quite bad so a meal of convenience turned out to be a good choice.

I feel a little cheeky adding a recipe card for this meal, but hey, what the heck, why not?

I bought all the ingredients from Coles.

The Fray Bentos Steak And Kidney Pie

For decades, the British had a love affair with the tinned pie. It was just so convenient: no fiddling about with meat from the butcher’s no pastry to make up just remove the lid with a can-opener, then slam it into the oven for 25 minutes1. More than enough time to open a tin of and put the kettle on for the Cadbury’s Smash instant mashed potato – you could even whisk up a Bird’s Angel Delight butterscotch mousse for afters. 1970s bliss.

When the cooking time’s up, you remove it from the oven and marvel at how the puff pastry crust has risen, golden and flaky. Lift this carefully, and you’ll find a layer of pastry which didn’t rise it has the consistency of soggy cardboard, but true tinned pie aficionados all agree this is the ‘best bit’. Finally, at the bottom you’ll find a few lumps of beef and, if you’re lucky, kidney swimming in a thick gravy. The meat has the habit of collecting towards one side of the tin, so if you’re dividing the pie, it’s fairer to serve the crust layers first, and then spoon out the meat.

Surprised to hear on one of the Royal Documentaries that HM The Queen’s staff have these pies on standby in case all else fails. I have always loved them – the pastry is fabulous, crispy and tasty. The filling can be variable. But, what is there not to like about a pie in a tin?

Easy to cook – 25-30 mins & is a good taste – meat & kidney pieces not the filler sludge of many processed pies. & good value. Ideal for storage – a back-up
