Shepherds Pie Recipe. Ive been making this Shepherds Pie recipe for my family for many years. When I was a young bride the only recipe I knew was actually called Hamburger Pie. That version was made with ground beef, tomato soup and a can of green beans topped with mashed potatoes. It was a common addition to my menu plan.

My shepherds pie recipe is pretty straightforward and starts the way most do. Youll begin by boiling the potatoes in a pot of salted water. If youve ever made my cheddar mashed potatoes , youll know the ones Im using in my shepherds pie are very similar.
How To Make Skillet Shepherds Pie
Weve streamlined this recipe to be as easy as possible. The first key tip is to start with the right potatoes, which are baking potatoes or russets. Because they have a floury texture, they mash easily without lumps that are hard to get rid of!
You can boil the potatoes, but we find its faster to microwave them on full power until soft.
The second tip is to use an ovenproof skillet, which means one without a plastic handle and that fits in your oven. If you dont have one, then simply use a square 8-9 inch baking pan.
Once the potatoes are cooking, you can cook the meat. Weve called for ground beef, and you can substitute ground lamb if you prefer. If you have leftover beef roast, mince it up a food processor and use it instead of ground beef.
Browning the beef is important for a flavorful pie, so fry it over medium-high heat for several minutes. Then you can add in the onions and garlic and remaining ingredients.

Prep This Ahead Of Time
If you plan to make this ahead of time, I suggest keeping the mashed potatoes and filing separate at first. Store them away in the fridge in sealed containers. When youre ready to bake, let the potatoes and filling sit at room temperature to soften before assembling. Then, pop it right into the oven for baking.

Shepherds Pie Vs Cottage Pie
For those who dont know the difference, both Shepherds and Cottage Pies are made with meat, gravy, and usually vegetables, and covered with potatoes. Generally, Shepherds Pie is made with lamb, Cottage Pie with beef. Though the term Cottage Pie was used as a blanket term for all meat/potato pies for about 100 years before people started calling the version with lamb Shepherds Pie.
That said, I dont think most people make that distinction here in America. Every Shepherds Pie Ive ever been served, except those Ive had in the UK, have been made with beef, and when I was doing research for this post, no one I asked had any idea what Cottage Pie was.
And since Id like the people in the US who enjoy Shepherds Pie to be able to find this Shepherds Pie, thats what Im going with.
How To Store And Freeze
Before putting in the refrigerator or freezer, make sure the pan has cooled to room temperature.
- Cottage pie keeps in the refrigerator for three to five days. Cover and wrap tightly with plastic wrap or aluminum foil.
- It can also be frozen by wrapping the pan with aluminum foil or freezer plastic wrap and place in the freezer where it will keep for up to two months. You should always freeze the pie the day you make it.
- To reheat, if frozen, thaw overnight in the refrigerator before reheating in the oven.

This was Mr. Hungrys favorite meal. He LOVED the idea of having steak instead of ground beef in one of his favorite meals of all time, shepherds pie. - 1 pkg frozen mixed vegetables
- ¼ cup tomato paste
- 1 cup low-sodium beef broth
- 3 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 6 slices frozen garlic Texas toast

- 2 lb red potatoes, coarsely chopped
- 6 Tbsp butter
- 1 cup shredded sharp Cheddar cheese
- ¼ tsp salt
- 1 head iceberg lettuce, cut into 6 wedges

- Salt and Pepper after several tests, we found this simple seasoning is all that is needed. Thyme and rosemary are commonly added but we found it overpowering in any quantity.
- Onion we used yellow onion, but you can substitute any variety
- Garlic aromatic that enhances the sauce
- All-purpose flour thickens the sauce
- Red Wine use a dry red wine to add rich flavor. Use any dry red wine such as Pinot Noir, Merlot, Cabernet, or Sauvignon
- Beef Broth you can use Chicken broth if that is what you have on hand.
- Tomato paste rounds out the flavor of the sauce
- Worcestershire sauce adds the umami
- Frozen vegetables we use a combination of carrots, peas and corn

What Is Shepherds Pie
First of all, this meal is not technically a true Shepherds Pie! A true shepherds pie originates from England and is traditionally made with ground lamb. However, since in the states, ground beef is eaten more than lamb, this meal is usually referred to as a shepherds pie.
Although the name might be a bit different, a shepherds pie is essentially a casserole with cooked meat and vegetables in a flavorful gravy, topped with creamy mashed potatoes, and sometimes cheese. This casserole gets baked in the oven until the the mashed potatoes are golden and slightly crispy on top.
Shepherds pie is a great way to repurpose a big meal into an equally delicious dinner! While Im sharing ground beef in this recipe today, my mom often made shepherds pie with leftover pot roast which you can certainly do.
How To Make My Easy Shepherds Pie Recipe
Place frozen vegetables in a medium saucepot and cover with water.
Put over medium-high heat. Bring just to a boil.
Remove from heat and drain. Place veggies in a bowl to the side.
In that same saucepot, because there is no reason to dirty up another one, place the French onion soup, gravy mix, and dry Italian seasoning.
Stir that together well and cook over medium-high heat until well blended and heated through, about 5 minutes or so.

Stir in your veggies and beef.
Mix this meat mixture together well.
In a large bowl, place the leftover mashed potatoes, cheese, and sour cream.
Stir well to combine.
Spread the ground beef mixture into the bottom of an 8×8 baking dish and top with mashed potatoes.
Sprinkle the remaining cheese on top of the mashed potato.
Bake, uncovered, at 350 for thirty minutes until the top is golden brown.
