Get Your Party Started With These Bread Bowl Recipes Tasty Recipes

Bread bowls are literally genius! Delicious and no bowls to wash? Sign me up folks! To eat one, use the cap of the bread bowl to dip in the soup.

Or if you love bread as much as me, just eat it. Then eat the soup with a spoon. Lastly, you can begin tearing pieces of the bread bowl from the outer edges and eat it until you finish it.

How To Make Step By Step Recipe Instructions

  • Dissolve the yeast and sugar in the warm water in your mixing bowl. You will need a large bowl for this recipe. I use a 6 quart stand mixer fitted with a dough hook to make this bread, but it can be made by hand as well.
  • Let it sit for about 5 minutes to let the yeast get foamy.
  • Add the olive oil, salt and all 6 cups of flour.
  • As you can see in picture 8 it looks like there is too much flour, but don’t worry, it will all mix in.
  • After all the flour is mixed in your dough should look like picture 9, a shaggy ball of dough that cleans the sides of the mixing bowl.
  • Knead at a medium speed for 5 minutes, or by hand for 10 minutes. The dough should end up like picture 10 and 11, very smooth, elastic-y and the sides of the bowl should be completely clean.
  • Remove the dough hook and cover the bowl with a clean dish towel to rise.
  • Over the next hour, about every 10 minutes or so, knead the bread dough in the bowl about 3 times. This is going to create that chewy french bread crust. It doesn’t have to be exactly every ten minutes, but you need to have kneaded the dough at least 4 times over that hour.
  • After the hour just let the dough rise until doubled. This should take about 30 minutes.

Dominos Bread Bowl Pasta Being Discontinued

Well over a decade ago, in 2009, Dominos announced what was back then the newest and most daring addition to their product range. This refers to their new pasta range, or specifically what it was served in.

While there was an option for customers to order it inside of a tin, Dominos announced back then that there will also be an option to order this new pasta range of theirs inside of a bread bowl. This combination is one that was loved by many almost immediately.

The name of bread bowls speaks for itself, but for those that arent completely familiar with them, these are little bowls that are made out of bread itself. They are completely edible and greatly add to the taste of whatever is put inside of them, especially the paste thats offered by Dominos.

As already mentioned, the combination was a great one. While it wasnt available in Dominos all around the world, it was still featured in most franchises of the brand and became one of the most popular products they had to offer.

This remained the case for many years to come. It was a great snack to have which worked excellently for most people because of the simplicity. However, Dominos announced something unexpected back in the earlier months of 2017. This was news regarding the bread bowl pasta, and specifically how Dominos will begin discontinuing it from here on out. After a few months or so, the bread bowl pasta was nearly erased from the brands menu.

Never Order A Bread Bowl At Panera Here’s Why

Love bread and can’t resist fast food? In that case, you’re probably familiar with Panera Bread and its delicious menu options, ranging from delicious salads to iconic bread bowls. But you might not be as familiar with the ways chain has tried to be good to and for its patrons. As per Delish, Panera Bread is something of a community stalwart in the sense that some of its outlets in areas that have economically disadvantaged residents follow a “pay-what-you-can model.” Panera Community Cafes have menus with the suggested donations but customers are asked to offer what is within reach for them.

Moreover, if you’re trying to be healthier, you’d be happy to know that Panera Bread was the first national brand in the country to make calorie counts available to its customers and has taken additional measures to make its menu items healthier. For example, artificial trans fats have been removed from the dishes coupled with artificial additives. However, if you love the brand’s bread bowls, we have bad news for you.

Right now, the bread bowl appears to only be available at select Domino’s locations. Back in 2017, one Domino’s fan took to in an attempt to get some answers directly from the chain. In the comments, other Facebook users shared their dismay over the missing menu item or locations where it was still available.

A lot of people seem to be fairly upset that Domino’s is no longer offering its bread bowl nationwide. There is at least one active Change.org petition, which has been signed by over 850 people. This number would likely be higher, but some customers are still able to get their hands on the item, like one Twitter user who was so excited about their September 2021 Chicken Alfredo Bread Bowl purchase they tweeted they were “winning at life.”

We’re not 100% sure why this dish was taken off select menus, as it appears to have been received mostly positively. The only real concern some seem to have is in regards to the dish’s nutritional content. But, as stated by The Impulsive Buy, if you’re ordering creamy pasta in a bowl made of pizza crust, “do you REALLY want to know?”

Shaping The Easy Homemade Bread Bowls

First, punch down the dough by poking with your fingers to release built up air. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.

Divide the dough into 8 equal pieces. I use a kitchen scale for this job which makes it super easy. Each dough ball will weight about 8.5 ounces.

Scissors work great for cutting the dough into smaller pieces. Use greased hands and greased scissors.

Use a lightly floured surface if needed. With one of the individual small dough balls cradled in both hands, fold the dough ball into the center to make a smooth ball.

Place the smooth ball with the folded seam down onto the parchment paper lined baking sheet. Four homemade bread bowls dough balls per baking sheet.

With a serrated or sharp knife, score an X on the top of all the dough balls. Create the egg wash by whipping together the egg white with the one tablespoon of milk.

Using a pastry brush, brush with egg wash to coat the dough ball with a thin layer of the egg mixture. When you brush with egg wash, this will create a nice crust on the finished bowls.

Cover the dough balls with a clean kitchen towel. Let rise and let the dough rest.

Ingredients In Bread Bowls

  • Yeast: We use active dry yeast to make bread bowl dough. I highly recommend using a quality yeast like Red Star Yeast its always my go-to brand for the best tasting breads!
  • Water: 2 and 1/4 cups is the perfect amount. Use warm water to cut down on rise time, about 110-115°F. Anything over 130ºF kills the yeast.
  • Sugar: 2 teaspoons of sugar feed the yeast which create carbon dioxide bubbles and allow the dough to rise.
  • Salt + Olive Oil: Salt and olive oil add flavor and richness.
  • Bread Flour: Bread flour contains a lot of protein which helps form a chewier, denser, and, well, more bread-like bread. We want a strong and crusty bread for our bread bowls and bread flour will help us achieve that.
  • If youre a bread beginner, dont be nervous about yeast. Its just another ingredient added to the dough. Were not doing anything special with it. Were just mixing it with water. The magic happens during hands-off time.

    Sourdough Bread Bowls

According to the Domino’s website, the bread bowl is made out of the chain’s hand tossed crust and a garlic oil blend. In addition to the obvious garlic and oil, this blend also includes parmesan cheese, salt, and parsley, among other ingredients. It is essentially the hand tossed crust in bowl form, but as we can see from how people have a preference when it comes to pancakes versus waffles, shape really does matter.

Serious Eats gives the bread bowls a less-than-favorable review, likening the dish to an idea sprouted out of a boardroom meeting. The outlet compares the bread bowl to a baked ball of pizza dough with a hole in the center . They also take issue with the pasta itself, describing it as “simultaneously mushy and dry, like baked ziti that has been sitting out a day too long.” Furthermore, they proclaim the dough to be “spongy, bland, overly sweet.”

But the Domino’s bread bowl also has its fair share of supporters. In a YouTube review, user PeepThisOut described the Chicken Alfredo Bread Bowl as much better than expected, praising the creamy sauce, chicken flavor, and the texture of the pasta. Likewise, food review sensation and Netflix star Daym Drops labeled the same dish in a YouTube clip as “something serious for your face,” rating it a four out of five.

Can I Make The Bread Bowls In Advance

The best part about making bread bowls is that you can easily tailor the recipe to accommodate your schedule. Once hollowed, however, we recommend enjoying bread bowls within 24 hours.

    Mix-ahead directions:

After the initial rise in step three of the bread bowl recipe, punch the dough down and divide the dough into balls as directed in step four. However, rather than place them on a baking tray to proof a second time, refrigerate the dough balls in an airtight container for up to 2 days.

Then, when youre ready to bake, remove the dough from the fridge, let it come to room temperature and proceed with step five. One added benefit to this method is the bread bowls will develop a stronger, more robust flavor due to the slow fermentation of the yeast that will occur while the dough rests in the fridge.

Bake and prepare the bread bowls as directed through step five. Then, store in an airtight container for up to three days. When ready to serve, hollow out as directed in step six and fill as desired. Next, take a look at these other copycat bread recipes.
