During our VBT tour of Acadia, guests participate in a “blueberry pie” survey. Baking Instructions:Preheat oven to 425°F. Remove pie from freezer and take off plastic wrap. Bake frozen pie on bottom rack for 20 minutes. Traditional Maine Wild Blueberry Pie
- 6Cups Blueberries
Make the Pie Dough
- Scoop the flour into a large mixing bowl, and measure in the salt.
- Use a knife to cut in the butter, then, using your fingertips, crumble up the butter into small, pea-sized pieces. It should be evenly distributed in the flour without any large pieces of butter left. Alternatively, you can use a food processor and pulse the butter into small pieces.
- Pour in the cold water and mix with a spoon until everything starts to come together into a slightly sticky dough. There should be no dry spots of flour, but if the dough still feels too dry or crumbly, add an additional tablespoon of cold water.
- Form the dough into two evenly sized balls, and wrap each in cling wrap or a clean, dry recycled plastic bag. After wrapping them, flatten them into a disc shape.
- You will only be using one of the two crusts for the pie, so place one in the fridge and if you do not have plans for the other one within the next few days, place it in the freezer. If you plan on making two pies, or using the second pie dough for something, place them both in the fridge. For the blueberry pie, the dough needs to chill for at least two hours.

- Combine the heavy cream, sugar and vanilla in a large mixing bowl and whisk on high speed until the cream is heavy and holds together, about 3 minutes. Take care not to over whip or your whipped cream will turn into butter!

This spot is great, one of those wonderful roadside attractions that I love! There are lots of trinkets, souvenirs, and blueberry products available for sale inside. But the best is the blueberry pie! It has a tender, flaky crust and is loaded with Maine blueberries. When I was there, I also picked up two five pound boxes of frozen blueberries. They are all separate so you can scoop out a cup or more and then let them thaw. In season, you can also get the blueberries fresh! I’d love to see their mini golf course start up again. I think it’d be a fun diversion when traveling!

Not in Old Port. Out of the way. Youll need a car and parking is limited. But it IS WORTH IT. They are justly famous from their version of a Whoopie Pie. Outstanding. Scones are very good.

Rhubarb Pie From Purple Pie Place: Custer South Dakota
This seasonal haunt, down the street from Mount Rushmore at the foot of the Black Hills, is hard to miss for its bold purple and pink exterior. Although there is a full menu, the pies are a real draw evident by hundreds of slices ordered each week, along with full pies. Anything rhubarb is worth trying whether it be the simple rhubarb pie or the sweet, spicy and tangy rhubarb-raspberry-jalapeno.
Wild Maine Blueberry Pie Recipe
Pie Dough
- 4 cups all purpose flour
- 4 sticks butter grated on a cheese grater
- 1 teaspoon salt
1. Place flour, salt, sugar and grated butter in a big mixing bowl.
2. Rub the flour and butter together between the tips of your finger until the fat is worked into the flour and looks like oats.
3. Add cold water and blend quickly with one hand, fingers held together and slightly cupped as you rapidly gather the dough into a mass.
4. Sprinkle up to 2 tablespoons more water on any of the remaining bits and add to the main body of the dough. Press the dough firmly into a ball.
5. Place the dough on a lightly floured surface and with the heel of your hand push the dough away from you so it smears across the board. Knead until it comes together in a nice ball. Split into two balls! Refrigerate for at least 2 hours.
6. Roll out dough into a 14 inch disk, and press into pie tin. Stephanie recommends sandwiching the dough between two sheets of parchment to do so, for an easier and smoother rolling process.
7. Blind bake the bottom shell only at 400 degrees for 8-20 minutes or until the dough is set. Remove and let cool.
Blueberry Filling
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 egg, beaten for egg wash
1. Wash berries and stir in flour, salt and sugar. Sprinkle with some lemon juice to taste. Set aside.
2. Pre-heat oven to 400°. Roll out remaining dough into a 12 inch disk.
4. Bake until the crust is golden brown and juices are bubbling, about 40-50 minutes. Let cool.
