In 1923, Chef Philip Roemer, who is credited as its inventor, served it to the actor George Arliss, when the actor stayed at a hotel Chef Roemer was working in. At the time, Arliss was performing in the play The Green Goddess, which is where the salad and dressing get their name.

Additionally, its believed that the dressing was inspired by another dressing served to King Louis XIII. Chef Roemers original version of the dressing was made with lemon juice, mayonnaise, parsley, anchovies, sourcream, and vinegar. To this day, most of the preceding ingredients are used to make other versions of Green Goddess salad dressing.

Panera Bread Green Goddess Salad with Chicken recipe is packing all of the goods with fresh tangy flavors that make eating this salad enjoyable and filling! Heres what youll need:

For the salad: we are using grilled chicken breast, spring salad mix, cherry tomatoes, hard boiled eggs, bacon, or turkey bacon for a healthier option, avocado and pickled onions. If you want to make this vegetarian, feel free to skip the chicken and use a can of chickpeas instead.

For the salad dressing: we are using greek yogurt for the base and blending it with a wide arrange of herbs like: parsley, basil, shallot, cilantro, chives, fresh dill, lemon, garlic, dijon mustard and white vinegar. If you want to make this dairy free, feel free to use a vegan/ non-dairy yogurt for the base.

Now that your dressing is complete, it’s time to throw together the salad. This is, in many ways, a classic Cobb salad that’s full of colorful and flavor-packed ingredients.

Grab a salad bowl and add one cup of spring mix. Since this recipe calls for two salads, you will add only half of the sliced chicken, diced bacon, avocado, diced tomatoes, and egg to this bowl, reserving the rest for your second serving. One tablespoon of feta cheese and one tablespoon of pickled onions make up the rest of the ingredients. Now that the salad is assembled, it’s time to get it all dressed up and ready to serve.

Like so many things, this copycat Panera Bread Green Goddess salad dressing is one of those recipes that go in and out of fashion since its creation in the 1920s. Nothing says spring like the incredible fresh taste of this homemade salad dressing because of all the fresh ingredients.

The original version is served on their Panera Bread Green Goddess Cobb Salad one of my favorites! Its loaded with fresh arugula and romaine lettuces, tomatoes, hard-boiled egg, pickled red onions, crispy bacon and sliced chicken breast. The pickled onions are my favorite! I also add extra vegetables, like cucumbers and kale. If you love the version from Panera Bread, you will love this copycat.

Panera Bread typically serves their Green Goddess dressing on a cobb salad. If youre looking to make their cobb salad, heres everything youll need. Grab a salad bowl and make that big salad!

  • Arugula, romaine, kale, red leaf blend I used a Spring Mix
  • Prepare the vegetables as outlined above 1 oz fresh basil leaves, 2 tbsp shallot
  • Add all ingredients to a blender and liquify. 1/2 cup mayonnaise, 1 cup plain Greek yogurt, 1 oz fresh basil leaves, 2 tbsp shallot, 2 tbsp basil pesto, 1/4 cup white wine vinegar, 1.5 tbsp agave syrup, 1 tsp dijon mustard, 1/2 tsp lemon juice, 1/4 tsp onion powder, 1/8 tsp coarse sea salt, 1/8 tsp freshly ground black pepper
  • Transfer to a container, cover, and refrigerate.

I Tried Panera’s New Toasted Baguette Sandwiches & There’s Only One I’d Get Again

Panera is known for its sprawling, welcoming atmosphere with fireplaces and cozy nooks combined with quick service. It is also known for its rotating menu of hot soups, half-sandwiches, and healthy-ish salads, along with the requisite freshly-baked breads, cookies, and sweet treats.

However, cheesy, piping hot subs are one thing we’d never go searching for at Panera. Which is likely about to change: the chain is leaning into hot subs with the launch of three new melts that come served on its ever-popular 10-inch baguette.

The three new items sound like they feature a boatload of cheese, and come in the following varieties: Green Goddess Caprese, Pepperoni Mozzarella, and Smoky Buffalo Chicken. I tried the new sandwiches with two family members during the MyPanera app first look, which runs through Jan. 11, after which the sandwiches will be available to all diners.

Interestingly, only one of them won me over, and I’d get it again with some key alterations. Here’s my ranking.

Panera Green Goddess Dressing Ingredients

This Green Goddess dressing does use mayo but we swapped out the sour cream for plain Greek yogurt. Its a great swap that is healthier. Lets get started!

  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise I only use Dukes!
  • 1 cup plain Greek yogurt you can swap sour cream for this if you like
  • 1 oz. fresh basil leaves, finely chopped I got one of those AeroGardens and have SO MUCH BASIL this recipe was perfect timing!
  • 2 tablespoons shallot, minced you could sub out with onion as well
  • 2 tablespoons basil pesto I used a jarred pesto or make your own
  • 1/4 cup white wine vinegar white vinegar or apple cider vinegar work as well
  • 1 tablespoon + 1 teaspoon agave syrup easy swap for this is honey
  • 1 teaspoon dijon mustard dont swap this its essential!
  • 1/2 tsp lemon juice bottled or fresh
  • 1/4 tsp onion powder you could swap out garlic powder if you were out of onion powder
  • pinch of kosher salt & coarse black pepper

Serving Ideas And Leftovers For Green Goddess Cobb Salad

When it comes to accompaniments for this copycat Panera Bread green goddess Cobb salad, pretty much anything bread-wise pairs well with this salad. Think a simple but delicious slice of baguette, perhaps, or a flavorful flatbread like naan.

Alternatively, if you’re a french fry kind of person, we always love to go healthy with a salad and then get some fries on the side. You can even dip them in the green goddess dressing seriously, don’t knock it until you try it! And, come to think of it, that dressing doesn’t need to be reserved only for salads. Carli notes that the dressing is also good drizzled over grilled veggies. If you happen to have any leftover dressing after all this, it will last in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.

  • Mayonnaise and Greek Yogurt Most recipes dont call for mayo, but I feel like it gives an extra creamy texture and tastes more like the original. You can easily swap in sour cream or yogurt.
  • Fresh Basil fresh is necessary here so dont skimp or reach from the dried. For more greens you could add some parsley or chives.
  • Yellow Onion just a little bit for an added bite thats just a tiny bit spicy.
  • Basil Pesto you can purchase store-bought or make your own from scratch. You could also just use more fresh basil and add a little olive oil instead. Using pesto adds some heft to the dressing, and nuttiness.
  • White Wine Vinegar For a tangy contrast to all the creaminess. Sup lemon juice or champagne vinegar.
  • Honey, Dijon Mustard, Salt and Pepper

Panera bread is all set to introduce their New Year’s special item in the form of three new Melts on their menu. The new sandwiches come as an addition to the chains Toasted Baguette sandwich lineup, and will be available at all participating locations across the country. Starting, customers will be able to enjoy new limited-time sandwiches at their nearest stores.

The three new sandwiches joining the chain’s menu are – the Pepperoni Mozzarella Melt, Smoky Buffalo Chicken Melt, and last but not least, the Green Goddess Caprese Melt. Customers will be able to enjoy the new melts at the nearest Panera Bread store, or through pick-up and delivery orders placed on the chain’s app or website.

Heres the best part of this recipe. Its incredibly easy to make. The only ingredients that need chopping is the basil, and itll take about 5 minutes to make your own pesto. Other than that, you just put all the ingredients in a bowl and whisk it together until its smooth and creamy.

Cover the dressing and refrigerate it, if you have time. Just 15 minutes will allow the flavors to come together and the dressing will shine.

You can use a food processor or blender if you want. I sometimes use my handheld stick blender. But a whisk works fine too.

I decided to use mostly the same ingredients that Panera uses in their dressing, which isnt exactly the same as some of the other green goddess dressing recipes youll find online.

The classic green goddess dressing uses a variety of herbs, which you can certainly do, but the Panera dressing uses basil and basil pesto. I used basil for the fresh herbs and also in the form of a pesto You can add more fresh herbs, like parsley and chives, to make the dressing more green.
