Well, the answer to that question is in its name. Chicken pot pie is made in a pot instead of a pie pan. They both contain a lot of the same ingredients: chicken, broth, vegetables, flour, etc. However, chicken pie has a thicker broth filling inside a pie crust. And chicken pot pie has more of a soup consistency with lots of delicious homemade pot pie noodles.

Freezing Portions Of A Gigantic Costco Chicken Pot Pie

How To Make Chicken Pot Pie – Homemade Pot Pie Recipe #MrMakeItHappen #PotPie #ComfortFood

The Costco chicken pot pie is wonderful. Bountiful large chunks of chicken and vegetables. I didn’t detect filler potatoes. Creamy, natural tasting sauce. Delectable crust that both crowns and supports the pie. At about $14, the pie is a screaming bargain.Question. I’d like to buy the pie, but want to freeze it in smaller portions. There is no way I can consume a whole pie without turning into one. If I cut it before freezing, all the filling and crust will collapse. I was thinking of freezing the whole pie until it just becomes solid, but not rock hard. Then cut into quarters, and freeze each quarter separately. Will this work? Other suggestions?

Making A Flour And Water Paste

Meanwhile, put the flour into a cup, make a thin paste by slowly adding a little warm water, as youre vigorously stirring with a fork or whisk. (If you add too much water without stirring enough it will get lumpy. But if you add only a little water, immediately stir to make a paste, and then keep adding water until its a liquid consistency, it should not get lumpy.

Or you can mix your flour and water in a gravy shaker. My mom-in-law always uses one of these to make her gravy thickener. I never found the need for using one, as I have mixed my gravy paste in a cup or bowl all my life and it usually doesnt get lumpy. But if you havent learned the trick to getting your thickener nice and smooth, you may want to try a gravy shaker. Tupperware has a well-loved one Im listing a link here, in case youre needing one

The Best Frozen Chicken Pot Pies

For years I’ve been rejecting the notion of comfort food on the reasonable but insufficient grounds that I fear nostalgia and I think the term’s too cutesy. Plus a restaurant-owning friend once told me he makes a lot of boat payments courtesy of comfort- and “value”-minded patrons who opt for the $14 macaroni and cheese instead of the $21 roast chicken. Therefore, it has always made me queasy for personal, lexicographic, and financial reasons to consider the comforting powers of certain foods.

But I’m tired of talking myself in circles to avoid what is, after all, a perfectly apt label, and admitting as much finally frees me up to discuss my love of meat pies in general and frozen chicken pot pies in particular.

Most of the five minutes a year I allow for reflection on my childhood are spent rhapsodizing about Willow Tree Farm chicken pies. The chicken was whitish and the gravy was greenish and the vegetables were nonexistent and the face-stuffing was rapturous, and when I started planning this story I assumed it would be more of a coronation of Willow Tree than an actual fair fight among leading national brands.

But it turns out that my beloved Willow Tree isn’t a leading national brand: It’s a Massachusetts phenomenon that is unevenly exported to the rest of the country. Sorry about that, guys.

That leaves us to consider chicken pot pies from Boston Market, Stouffer’s, Marie Callender’s, and Swanson.

How To Make Pa Dutch Pot Pie Noodles

Making the pot pie noodles Amish is really very easy. Whisk the eggs in a bowl, add water and salt. Mix. Add flour and mix until it all comes together in a ball.

Sprinkle a thin layer of flour onto a clean spot on your countertop. Place your dough on the flour and spread out a bit with your hands. Lift the dough and sprinkle more flour underneath and sprinkle flour over the top as well.

Roll out the dough with a rolling pin until its fairly thin. I hadnt made this dish in a little while and remembered that I left it too thick the last time. So I rolled it about as thin as I could get it. But sadly, this time it was too thin for my taste. Next time Ill get it just right! But I would say roll the dough to somewhere around an eighth inch thick.

If your dough wants to keep sticking to the countertop, just lift the edges and sprinkle more flour underneath.

After you have it rolled to the desired thickness, use a pizza cutter and slice it into about one and a half-inch strips in both directions, to make little pot pie noodle squares.

How To Make Chicken Pot Pie

To begin, dust a clean, dry work surface with flour and place the puff pastry over top.

Sprinkle the pastry with flour and roll to about 1/8-inch thick, smoothing the creases with the rolling pin at the same time. Using a sharp knife, kitchen shears, or a pizza cutter, cut out 4 circles about 2 inches larger than the circumference of your soup bowls. Place the dough rounds on a foil-lined baking sheet and refrigerate until ready to use.

Next, make the filling. In a large sauté pan over medium heat, melt the butter, Add the yellow onion, garlic, celery, pearl onions, and carrots.

Sauté for 8 to 10 minutes, or until the carrots are just cooked.

Add the flour.

Cook, stirring constantly, for about 2 minutes.

Add the broth, cognac, salt, and white pepper. Bring to a boil, stirring with a wooden spoon to incorporate the flour.

Simmer until thickened, a few minutes. Off the heat, stir in the heavy cream, herbs, chicken, and peas.

Ladle the filling into oven-safe ramekins or soup bowls . The filling should come up no more than three-quarters of the way to the top of the bowls. If you have extra, make another bowl.

Brush the outside edges of each bowl with an egg wash.

Place the cold dough rounds over the soup bowls, pressing firmly around the edges so that the dough adheres, and then brush the top of the dough with the egg wash.

Using a sharp knife, make a ½-inch slit in the top of each pie. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, or until the pastry is a rich golden brown.
