Buttermilk Sky Pie Shop Retains Knoxville Architectural Design Firm

The store design for Buttermilk Sky Pie Shop, developed by Studio Four Design, is based on a southern traditional aesthetic to reflect the roots of the franchise owners Scott and Meredith Layton.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. July 18, 2016 Buttermilk Sky Pie Shop selected Studio Four Design, a top architecture firm in Knoxville, to aid the development of additional franchised locations nationwide. Buttermilk Sky Pie Shop owners Scott and Meredith Layton opened their first location in Knoxville in 2013, and began franchising in early 2014.

After previously working with Studio Four Design on their own home, the Laytons consulted the firm to develop a concept that preserves the brand continuity which is now reflected in the four Buttermilk Sky Pie Shops locations in the southern U.S.

Scott and Meredith wanted a store design that reflected their southern roots in a simple, yet stated way, said Michael Keller, principal and CFO of Studio Four Design. We developed what we call a Modern Garden & Gun concept which maintains the southern tradition aesthetic of Scott and Merediths family by integrating old stained sliding doors and heirloom pieces with more modern elements like subway tiles. We wanted to create a design guide that could be simulated in various building layouts and still communicate the familial foundation of their business.

A Note From Our Founders

When we opened our first Buttermilk Sky Pie Shop, we never knew how rewarding pies could be.

Pies connect people to past memories and the love theyve experienced in their lives. Older men shuffle in alone and quietly savor each bite of their pie, remembering the pies their wives used to make. Women smile wistfully and say how our pies taste like their mothers pie that they remember from so long ago, pies they could never quite replicate. With a simple concoction of butter, sugar, eggs, and love people instantly travel back to happy times in their lives where they were surrounded with love. That taste of homemade pie makes those memories come to life, even if it is just for a fleeting moment.

We invite you to join us in sharing the love of pie across the country.
