Wholly Wholesome Organic Whole Wheat

  • $6.99 for a package of 2
  • Frozen in aluminum pie tin
  • Whole wheat flour, palm oil, water, cane sugar, sea salt

Tasting notes: Edible, doesnât taste artificial, definitely tastes âhealthyâ in a wheat bread vs white bread way, might work with a savory pie

Structure notes: It did crack a little on the side with pre-baking.

OKAY. seems very health-food-ish, wouldnât use it for a sweet pie. Might use it for a savory cheesy tomato pie.

Did I Mention It Has No Dairy

Its an indisputable fact that the crust is the best part of any pie. Its buttery and flaky and contrasts perfectly with any fruit or cream filling, bringing pie to a level a mere cake can never reach.

Unfortunately for those with a dairy or gluten intolerance, this level of perfection is one that can almost never be reached by crusts made without normal flour and tons and tons of butter. Usually, gluten-free or dairy-free pie crusts are not only bland from lack of butter, but have a chalky or cracker like consistency, making it something no one really wants to eat, and defeating the purpose of having a slice of pie altogether.

Today, all that changes.

No more going Whole Foods to buy a gluten-free pie crust, thinking itll be at least palatable, only to find in revolting. No more telling yourself that trying to make a gluten and dairy-free pie crust at home is something too hard to even consider.

This recipe is gluten-free and dairy-free, and yet still manages to mimic the buttery-ness of a normal crust, giving you the pie eating experience you deserve. And best of all? It is SO easy.

Though I have strong opinions about pizza and its crust content, I also love eating pizza, maybe too much, and realized perhaps this was a way to have it more often without feeling guilty about it. So I relented and took that first steper, biteinto experimental pizza crust. Whole Foods is my jam, so I thought I would give its own brand of 365 Cauliflower Pizza Crust a try. Its gluten-free, has half the sugar of traditional crusts, and is packed with vitamin C. My pizza oven was ready to be fired up.

So when I pulled this pie crust out of its packaging, I was surprised to find it softer than I had expected, something I took to be a good sign. I had this idea of cauliflower crusts having the crunchiness of hardtack. The instructions were simple: remove from packaging, bake for 6-8 minutes, voila. So I lightly lathered its surface with tomato sauce, and proceeded to top it with a proportionate amount of mozzarella, a sprinkle of parmesan, and some basil, and let it do its thing.

    • $4.79 for a package of 2
    • Frozen in aluminum pie tin
    • Enriched wheat flour, soybean oil, water, hydrogenated soybean oil, dextrose, salt, sodium metabisulfite

Tasting notes: Completely inedible. I spit it out as soon as I took a bite. I taste tested pie shells from 3 different packages from different stores and they were all terrible.

Structure notes: Of the 3 packages I bought, in each package one shell was cracked or broken in places right out of the package. Every blind baking test resulted in a pie where the rim cracked away from the rest of the pie.

AVOID. By far the worst tasting of all the pie crusts I tested.

Easy Plant Based Pie Crust/Oil, Sugar, Gluten Free/Vegan Friendly
    • $6.49 for a package of 2
    • Comes rolled and frozen, have to defrost completely then microwave 10 sec to unroll
    • Flour, palm oil, water, cane syrup, sea salt, cane sugar, guar gum

Tasting notes: Edible, taste is fine, but the crust itself is a little tough

Structure notes: Out of the box the crust dough circle was not large enough to properly cover my pie dish. I placed a piece of plastic wrap over it , and used my hands to press the dough out a bit. I then lined my pie dish and chilled it for 20 minutes before pre-baking. Even with that, the pie crust slumped with pre-baking.

OKAY. I both prefer the Wholly Wholesome Pie Shell and the Trader Joeâs pie dough to this pie dough. Taste is good, but a little tough and not enough coverage for my pie pan.
