Boston Cream Pie comes up as a frequent topic on Trip Advisors Boston Board.

Visitors see this as a bucket list taste of Boston. I added my two cents to a recent conversation, where someone planning a visit asked if it was possible to get a piece of pie without eating a full meal at the Parker House. However, I decided that more research was needed.

Ed, Poppy, and I took a walk to the Parker House and found the gift shop that was reputed to sell the pie to go. Its called Morsels and is located next to the 60 School Street entrance to the Omni Parker House.

As you may know, the Parker House is said to have invented this creation. Its so popular, that they have it ready to go in the coffee/gift shop attached to the hotel. Its priced at $8, at the time of this post.

It was not on display when I went in, but signs in the window said they sold it, so I asked the woman behind the counter. She asked how many I wanted. One, I replied, and she went to a refrigerator to get the dessert.

And, how many forks? She tucked the two requested forks and a supply of napkins into a small bag that was perfect for carrying the cake in its protective, domed container. She was charming and had obviously mastered Boston Cream pie to go hospitality.

We took our Parker House Boston Cream Pie to the Brewer Fountain Plaza on the Boston Common for tasting.

Why Is Boston Cream Pie

In the words of food writer Greg Patent, author of Baking in America, the cream cake was more like a cream puff than a cake . It is also possible that the Boston cream pie name is a reference to the claim by the Parker House Hotel in Boston that its first chef, M., invented the dessert there. Sanzian. Ms.

Visiting Family In Boston

Excellent location. More than welcoming door staff, bell staff and desk personnel. Really the only criticisms I have are pretty slim the bathroom is extremely small with no counter space but realize this is an old hotel. Also there is no fridge which is found in almost all lower cost hotels. The TV is mounted on the wall but is extremely small and does not swivel to allow viewing in all angles of the room.More

The hotel is located in a great area among great places to eat, close to the captiol. I found the the staff to be really friendly and helpful. Rooms are small and in need of upgrading! Cable did not get all of the channels but the internet seem to work fine. Business center is quite expensive to use, if you are there for work.

What kind of food is Boston known for? Well, it of course has the New England influence with clam chowder, fish and chips, baked beans, lobster , and clams. But think about it BOSTON cream pie!A Boston cream pie is a cake filled with custard/cream and then frosted with chocolate. Not so much of a pie and more of a cake. It was created at the Parker House Hotel , which is also the home of Parker House Rolls and Boston Scrod.

Owners of the Parker House Hotel in Boston state that the Boston cream pie was first created at the hotel by Armenian-French chef M. Sanzian in 1856. The cake he created, called Parker House Chocolate Cream Pie, consisted of two layers of French butter sponge cake filled with crème pâtissière and brushed with a rum syrup, its side coated with crème pâtissière overlain with toasted sliced almonds, and the top coated with chocolate fondant.

Unlike some historic hotels, the Omni Parker House has successfully updated guest rooms to suit modern travelers’ needs without forfeiting Old World charm. Their level of luxury is a noticeable notch below that of the hotel’s common spaces, but they display decorative nods to the hotel’s 19th-century heritage: cherrywood headboards, floral bed runners, mirrors with old-fashioned molding, wallpaper with a subtle brocade print, vertically striped window treatments.

At the lower end of the room inventory spectrum are 90-square-foot Economy Petite Single Rooms and 125-square-foot Traditional Rooms . The mid-range, 210-square-foot Deluxe Rooms are this Omni’s standard-room equivalent. Higher-level rooms include 400-square-foot Executive Rooms and the one-bedroom Freedom Trail Family Suite, which has bunk beds, beanbag chairs, a chalkboard wall, and dress-up costumes. At the top of the line is the 1,000-square-foot Harvey Parker Suite. Omni Parker House is a Boston landmark best known for its rolls and Boston cream pie, but the location is what makes it stand out. From the hotel it is a short walk to the best restaurants and theaters. Our room was the largest ever in the city. It was more the size of a suite. Very friendly people from the bellhop, desk clerks, to valet parking.King bed was comfortable and our room was quiet. Only negative was that the view was a brick building. Not a problem for us, but could be for others.More

Very beautiful entry and lobby areas. Close walking distance to several attractions. Room was small but very clean. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Large workout facility that was never busy. Would stay again.

Harvey Parker opened the ornate, five-story Parkers Hotel and Restaurant in 1855. During this time, chocolate was primarily consumed as a beverage or in puddings. When Harvey Parker hired creative French Chef Sanzian to create and serve a versatile menu in his restaurant, his bake staff decided to drizzle chocolate icing onto a sponge cake filled with vanilla custard. Instantly, the Boston Cream Pie was born and became an immediate and perennial hit. The original Parker House recipe for the pie was so popular, that in 1958 it became a Betty Crocker boxed mix. On Dec. 12, 1996, the Boston Cream Pie was proclaimed the official Massachusetts State Dessert. The bill was signed into law in the Omni Parker Houses historic Press Room. To help celebrate the hotels 150th anniversary, in September of 2005, the Worlds Largest Boston Cream Pie was displayed at Faneuil Hall Marketplace. The pie was sixteen feet in diameter and topped with another Boston Cream Pie resembling the Parker House structure from 1855. The monstrous dessert included 1,300 pounds of cake, 800 pounds of filling and 500 pounds of chocolate frosting.

Does anyone know if we can just get a serving of Boston Cream Pie at the Parker House without having to do the fine-dining in the restaurant? We will only be in Boston for a few days and there are so many food places on our list that we’re trying to avoid having to eat a big meal at Parker House and stuffing ourselves silly. Does just going for dessert look ridiculous? I thought of the Last Hurrah Bar that’s at Parker House but we don’t drink so I was trying to avoid ordering only pie and water there. Such a dilemma. 🙂

The Last Hurrah does serve food and there is no requirement that you consume alcohol there so you do not have to indulge or drink water. Many people look ridiculous in bars and it isn’t usually because of ordering pie. i don’t drink either and have never had a problem in a bar. If all else fails, the Parker House has the recipe on their web site.

You can have the pie in parkers or the last hurrah, no problem. My wife and I have done that a couple of times on different trips. Nice way to relax for a short time between shopping, sightseeing etc.

I went searching because I thought I had read that you could get it to go. I found a few reviews that say the person bought the pie in the gift shop at the Parker House. I may just stop by this weekend and get one. I haven’t had their version in many years.

Not many cities are as tied to a food as Boston is to its eponymous Boston Cream Pie, the official state dessert of Massachusetts. The Omni Parker House Hotel not only created this piece of deliciousness in 1856, but theyre still serving up the original version in the restaurant nearly 160 years later. Augustine Anezin, the Cream Pies inventor, may be long gone, but his dream still lives on in each and every bite of this masterpiece.

Cooks in New England and Pennsylvania Dutch regions were known for their cakes and pies and the dividing line between them was very thin. This cake was probably called a pie because in the mid-nineteenth century, pie tins were more common than cake pans. The first versions might have been baked in pie tins. Boston Cream Pie is a remake of the early AmericanPudding-cake pie.

1856 The Parker House Hotel , claims to have served Boston cream pies since their opening in 1856. French chef Sanzian, who was hired for the opening of the hotel, is credited with creating Boston cream pie. This cake was originally served at the hotel with the names Chocolate Cream Pie or Parker House Chocolate Cream Pie. This was the first hotel in Boston to have hot-and-cold running water, and the first to have an elevator.

1879 In the cookbook, Housekeeping in Old Virginia, by Marion Cabell Tyree, has the following recipe for Boston Cream Cakes:Boston Cream Cakes:1 1/2 cups of water1 cup butter5 eggs

Boil the butter and water together, stir in the flour while boiling after it is cool, add the eggs, well beaten. Put a large spoonful in muffin rings, and bake twenty minutes in a hot oven.

The cream for them is made as follows: Put over the fire one cup of milk and not quite a cup of sugar, one egg, mixed with three teaspoonfuls of corn starch and one tablespoonful of butter. Boil a few moments only. When cool, add vanilla to the taste.

Open the cakes and fill them with this cream.
