How Do You Season Cast Iron

When you get your cast pie iron, youre going to need to season it. Rinse it with straight water and wipe out thoroughly. Then, cover the inside and outside of your pie iron halves with Crisco shortening. Place them on the grill or into your campfire for about 15 minutes.

After about 8 minutes, flip them over and place back on the grill or in the campfire. Then, allow to cool completely. Wipe out with a clean cloth. Never clean your cast iron with soap and water. This will de-season it and youll have to scrub and re-season your campfire pie maker all over again.

    Our Pie Iron Buying Guide

Campfire Cooking! 4 Delicious Pie Iron Recipes

Food experts call the pie iron an underrated camping tool. It boasts a simple design: just two square or similarly-shaped cast iron or aluminum pans mounted onto fireproof rods. The pans are then joined together with a hinge, and presto! It becomes a miniature oven.

Midwestern campers love this product. Pie irons are great for making sealed-edge sandwiches, omelets, mini-pies and many other delightful treats when youre enjoying the great outdoors.

Pie irons are made to use over open flames like campfires. Most are constructed from cast iron, which is durable and can stand up to high temperatures. Aluminum pie irons do not stand up to heat as well but are not as heavy to hold. These outdoor cooking tools have long handles to keep chefs safe from the heat, with grips on the ends.

The best part about pie irons is that the concave plates envelop their contents, which allows the food to get cooked on all sides. The edges crimp the crust and seal all the good fillings inside. The cooked food resembles an empanada or a little pie. Delicious!

    Mushroom Bacon And Swiss Panini

Makes 1 serving in a 4- to 5-inch square iron.

  • Spray pie iron with non-stick spray.
  • Spread one side of each slice of bread with butter. Place the first piece of bread, butter side down, on one side of the pie iron. Top with bacon, mushrooms, onions, and Swiss cheese. Add a bit of ketchup . Top with the other slice of bread, buttered side facing out.
  • Attach the other side of the pie iron and clasp to close. Cut off any bread hanging over the edges. Cook over medium-high heat for 3 to 4 minutes per side until the sandwich is golden brown.
  • Make It Vegetarian:

    • 4 to 6 slices pepperoni, thinly sliced
    • ¼ cup mozzarella cheese

  • Drizzle each side of the pie iron with a little olive oil for flavor. Split the pizza dough into two pieces and stretch it until its fairly thin and will cover the bottom of the pie iron.
  • Lay one piece of dough on one side of the pie iron. Top with sauce, pepperoni, and cheese. Cover with the second piece of dough. Attach the other side of the pie iron and clasp to close. Cook over medium to high heat for 3 to 4 minutes per side until the pizza is golden brown.
  • Make It Vegetarian:

Replace the pepperoni with your favorite vegetables.

Season Them Like You Would A Cast Iron

Rome Industries is the biggest name in the American pie iron business, having manufactured them for camping stores since 1964. If you buy your pie irons new, make sure that you season them well to create a nonstick surface and prevent rust. You can season them just like you would any cast iron pan: with repeated oiling and baking over an open campfire or grill. That way, none of your camp snacks will stick to the pans. As with normal cast iron pans, the pie iron will get more and more seasoned with each use and will last for years.

  • Tips For Cooking Pie Iron Recipes

There are three things that youre going to want to keep in mind to make your pie iron cooking experience great.

First: A pie iron should be seasoned just like any other cast iron cooking surface. .

Second: You need to preheat your pie irons before you start loading them up with goodies. I know, theyll be hot, but trust me, it is important. If you dont reheat them, your food will end up sticking. Consider getting some high temp barbecue gloves for handling them.

Third: Its good to have a cheap cutting board or metal rack handy to set your hot pie irons on while working with them. A pie iron fresh off the fire can burn a brand into a lot of surfaces.
