Not So Familiar: The Shuttle Services

France – Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port: Pension Maison Donamaria

Here is an option pilgrims dont really know about. Thats too bad, because it really is a handy way to cut in half that stage! This service is mostly available during the season on the Napoleon route itineraryHow does it work?

The shuttle services, an easy way to cut in half your stage

On the first day, you walk from Saint Jean Pied de Port until a meeting point you and the driver have agreed upon. A shuttle recovers you there and drives you back to the village, where you spend a second night. On the second day, you take the shuttle again at the village, which drives you back where it retrieved you the day before. Youll then finish your stage until you reach Roncesvalles.

Different transports services offer to put such trips together. Some are companies that specialize in pilgrim transportation, like Napoléon Compostelle or Express Bourricot. Others are taxis that also offer their services along the Way, like the Taxi de lOstibarret, the Transports Nafarroa or the Taxi Maïtia.

Be careful when you book your shuttle, these companies and taxis dont offer the same services! Conditions, meeting points and prices change from one to the other. Check with them to know the details of their services to confirm a shuttle that meets your needs!

As far as hotels in SJPdP go, I stayed at the Central Hotel one night. It was nice. Right next to the small river that runs through town. The one private albergue I made reservations at beforehand was the Gite Azkorria. That was nice as well, and very close to the pilgrim’s office. It included breakfast in the morning.

For centuries Saint Jean Pied de Port has played an important role in European Christian culture. The town is the starting point of the Camino Frances, the most popular Camino de Santiago route. Thousands of people arrive every year at the small town of St.Jean Pied de Port in the French Pyrenees to start their journey on the Camino de Santiago. In this post, Im going to describe different ways of getting to St.Jean by public transport.

There are different ways of getting to St.Jean Pied de Port. Whichever way you choose youll have to make at least one switch in order to get there. Its a very small place, there are no direct transportation options from major cities in France or Spain. When I walked the French Camino I got to Saint Jean from Barcelona. First, I took a bus from Barcelona to Pamplona, and then another bus from Pamplona to SJPDP.

Departure times and ticket prices can change, please, confirm the information on the companies websites following the links provided in the post.
