I got my first taste of Key Lime Pie while having breakfast at Blue Heaven. This restaurant is an institution in Key West over the course of its history the property has hosted cock fights, gambling, and even Friday night boxing matches refereed by the one and only, Ernest Hemingway. How could I say no to that?
Even though I went to Blue Heaven for breakfast , I still saved a little bit of room for pie because thats what you do when youre in the Key Lime Pie capital.
When my slice of pie arrived at the table, I couldnt believe the height of the meringue it was practically the size of my face! The meringue was a nice golden brown on the outside, and white and fluffy once you cut into it. The pie had the perfect balance of tartness and sweetness, and because Lemon Meringue Pie is my favourite, the similarities between the two immediately won me over.

Key lime pie is more than just the official dessert of the Florida Keys it’s the official dessert of summer. No matter where you are, the combination of sweet and tangy and creamy and cool filling on a buttery, crumbly, maybe even spiced or salty crust is a vacation for your mouth. But it is essential to the Keys in more ways than one. Naturally, Key limes are native to the area they’re smaller, more delicate, tangy-er, and more aromatic than Persian limes, making them perfect for inclusion in a dessert.
The nature of pie itself could only come from the Keys as well. What many accept to be the first mention of Key lime pie comes from a ship salvager , a man named William Curry his cook, “Aunt Sally” made it for him. But Aunt Sally was probably not the inventor of the pie… the recipe was probably floating around the Keys for years before that. One theory? The pie was invented by sponge fishermen in the Keys the main ingredients were things that fishermen would have had in their boats on long trips. Plus, the original recipe wasn’t cooked and there definitely weren’t ovens on board the sponge fishing boats of the olden days.

The service is excellent. However, I’d eaten Key Lime Pie before and it really didn’t do much for me. I’m a dessert eater and, can honestly say that I’d much prefer a lemon meringue or plain cheesecake.

The History Of Key Lime Pie In Key West
There are a few stories going around about the origins of key lime pie. Some say it originates from New York while others say it was derived from the Magic Lemon Cream Pie published on a promotional brochure by Borden, a producer of condensed milk.
The story told in Key West goes all the way back to the 1800s, when Key West sponge fisherman kept limes on board to prevent sickness. The fisherman, called hookers by the locals, would whip up a sweet treat mixing the limes with condensed milk and sometimes adding a wild bird egg. Theyd pour it over stale Cuban bread and leave it out to set in the sun.
The fishermans wives took it a step further and baked it in a pie crust. It was a modest dessert of the working class, up until Sarah Jane Lowe Curry, the daughter-in-law of Floridas first millionaire started serving it. Known as Aunt Sally, she served it to the children visiting her home and it wasnt long until it was served in every restaurant in Key West.

And there is a lot of Key lime to try, not just the pie. We ordered a Key lime cupcake, a Key lime ice cream and, a Key lime pie, of course.
The kids loved the ice cream and the cupcake was a delicious surprise. Upon reaching the centre of the spongy cake, the burst of key lime filling sent my tastebuds into overdrive.
