So, if you must use a pie chart, try to abide by these rules:

  • Don’t use more than five sections. Too many skinny slices are hard to read.
  • Place the largest slices from 12 at the top and work your way around the circle. Like this:
  • Avoid comparing one pie chart to another.
  • Don’t use 3-D pie charts.

For example, if you have several companies that operate on the market, you canrepresent a part of every company on the market as a slice.

This data contains five slices that fall below 10%.

To make smaller slices more visible in a pie chart, Microsoft Excel provides thePie of Pie , and Bar of Pie chart sub-types.

Each of these chart sub-types separates the smaller slices from the main pie chart anddisplays them in a supplementary pie or stacked bar chart. To create a Pie of Pieor Bar of Pie chart, follow these steps:

    1. Select the data range .

    2. On the Insert tab, in the Chartsgroup, choose the Pie and Doughnut button:

Choose Pie of Pieor Bar of Pie

    3. Right-click in the chart area. In the popup menu, select Format Data Series…

    4. On the Format Data Series pane, inthe Series Options tab, select which data to display in the second pie :

There are several ways to choose which categories to display in the secondarypie or bar chart:

    • Split series by Position
    • Split series by Value
    • Split series by Percentage Value
    • Split series by Custom

You can then make any other adjustments to get the look you desire:

    • Pie Explosion detaches the slice from the primary chart and moves itcloser to the secondary chart
    • Gap Width controls the distance between charts

Although Pie charts are used a lot in Excel and PowerPoint, there are some drawbacks about it that you should know.

You should consider using it only when you think it allows you to represent the data in an easy to understand format and adds value for the reader/user/management.

Benefits Of Using A Bar Of Pie Chart In Excel

By separating the smaller slices from the main pie, the Bar of pie chart lets you handle more categories in a pie chart, thereby simplifying a complex pie.

You can also use this as a tool to highlight the important portions of your pie chart.

The Bar of Pie chart is quite flexible, in that you can adjust the number of slices that you want to move from the main pie to the bar.

Besides this, the Bar of pie chart in Excel calculates and displays percentages of each category automatically as data labels, so you dont need to worry about calculating the portion sizes yourself.

Change The Labels Of A Pie Chart

By default, the SAS Pie Chart shows the category name and its frequency inside the chart. You can change this default behavior with the datalabelcontent and datalabellocation options.

The datalabellocation option defines where the labels are placed. You can use the keywords inside and outside. By default, SAS places the labels at the inside.

With the datalabelcontent option, you define what information the labels contain. You can use the following options:

    • ALL: To show the category name, frequency, and percentage.
    • STANDARD : The show the category name and frequency.
    • NONE: To show nothing:
    • : To show the category name and percentage.
    • : To show the category frequency and percentage.

In this example, we will show the category name and percentage outside of the Pie Chart, see the SAS code below.

    Construction Of Pie Chart

Now we will discuss about the construction of pie chart or pie graph. Inbrief let us recall about, what is a pie chart?

The pie chart is a pictorial representation of data relative to a whole. Each portion in the circle represent an element of the collected data. The pie chart represents the composition of various elements in a whole. The total value of the pie chart is always 100%. Each portion in the circle shows a fraction or percentage of the total.

Pie chart is a circular graph which is used to represent data. In this :

Various observations of the data are represented by the sectors of the circle.

The total angle formed at the centre is 360°.

The whole circle represents the sum of the values of all the components.

The angle at the centre corresponding to the particular observation component is given by

If the values of observation/components are expressedin percentage, then the centre angle corresponding to particularobservation/component is given by

How to construct a pie chart?

Stepsof constructionof pie chart for a given data:

Find the central angle for each component using theformula given onthe previous page.

Draw a circle of any radius.

    Draw a horizontal radius

Starting with the horizontal radius, draw radii, makingcentral anglescorresponding to the values of respective components.

Repeat the process for all the components of the givendata.

These radii divide the whole circle into varioussectors.

Thus, we obtain the required pie chart.

Data for a pie chart can be summarized in a table like the above, where the first column indicates a category, and the second the proportion, frequency, or amount of that category. Usually, the total does not need to be specified separately unless it is to be listed somewhere else on a generated figure. Alternatively, some tools can just work with the unaggregated data as in the below table, essentially performing the aggregation into the table above at time of pie chart creation.

    Formatting Data For Pie Charts

Getting your data ready for a pie chart is simple.

Just make sure that your categories and associated values are each on separate lines:

In this example, well use the number of units sold for a range of products.

Weve put each category and value on a row, but you can also separate them into columns. Excel can interpret both formats.

  • Why Use A Pie Chart

If youre here, youre probably already convinced that a pie chart is the best way to present your data. If not, though, here are a few reasons you should consider it:

    1. It can show a lot of information at once.

Many charts specialize in showing one thing, like the value of a category. Pie charts are great for showing both a value and a proportion for each category.

That makes for a more efficient chart.

    2. It allows for immediate analysis.

The way in which data is presented by a pie chart makes it very easy to make comparisons quickly. That allows viewers to analyze the data in a snap.

And thats what youre using a chart for in the first place, isnt it?

    3. It requires little additional explanation.

Some graphs and charts include complicated information and arent intuitively clear. A box plot, for example, might leave audiences scratching their heads.

But nearly everyone knows how to read a pie chart. That makes it easier for you to present and for them to interpret.

    4. Variations give you more options.

There are many different kinds of pie charts, and they each have distinct visual advantages. Well only be going over the basic chart here, but keep this in mind.

If you want to present your pie chart in a different format, theres probably a way to do it!
