The Pie Town Annual Pie Festival Includes A Pie
Pie Town is located along U.S. Highway 60 in Catron County. Its name comes from an early bakery for making dried-apple pies that was established by Clyde Norman in the early 1920s. Pie Town is the location of a “Pie Festival” on the second Saturday of each September. Pie Town is also located immediately north of the Gila National Forest and not very far west of the Plains of San Augustin, the location of the Very Large Array radio telescope, which is also located along U.S. 60.
Another way to get to Pie Town is by way of the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail. For cyclists, equestrians, motorcyclists, and hikers, Pie Town provides a number of services including lodging, supplies and unique flavors of pie on request. In June 2007, three residents of Pie Town, Nita Larronde, Don Kearney, and Kathy Knapp, were awarded the Curry Trail Angel Award by the Adventure Cycling Association in recognition for their kindness and generosity.
The area of Pie Town in rich in Native American history. Many Ancestral Puebloan and Acoma pottery shards have been found in the area, along with grinding slicks, an ancient axe head, and petrified wood. Some fossilized bones have been found on the ground. The ruins of Ancestral Puebloan communities, which consist of one to a few dozen structures, are also found here.
The Pie Town Annual Pie Festival includes a pie-baking contest, games and races, music, food, and arts and crafts.

A Community Based On Pie
The Pie Town settlement started with a settler and a mining claim. A man named Clyde Norman staked a claim in the area in the early 1920s. His prospecting pursuits did not pan out so he opened a general store that catered to the miners and ranchers in the area. He discovered that he had a penchant for making pies, a passion he shared with family, customers and travelers. His reputation as a purveyor of pies spread throughout the region and people began to refer to the settlement as Pie Town.
When the locals petitioned for a post office in 1927 the authorities asked them to come up with a more conventional name. They refused. They were adamant that the community would be known as Pie Town or there would be no town.
At the height of the dust bowl era and depression in the 1930s, approximately 250 families lived in the area. The land in the Great Plains was barren due to prolonged drought, with storms whipping dense, brown clouds of dust across the plains. Dust bowl refugees settled in the area after abandoning their farms in neighboring states. The 1862 Homestead Act was effectively still in place, meaning new arrivals received parcels of land to farm.

When Sarah Joe Montana Chavez first visited Pie Town, New Mexico, on family vacations, three pie restaurants were open for business in the small high-desert town. The towns love of pie was signified by the summertime Pie Town Pie Festival. Pie Towns appeal was was based on curiosity from quirky travelers. Folks look at a map and think, oh, Pie Town, lets check that out and eat a pie in Pie Town, says Montana Chavez.
Then the COVID-19 pandemic halted mass gatherings and the Pie Town Pie Festival had to be cancelled in 2020. Trepidation lingered for the three pie businesses on whether to open their doors, thanks to the unknown health factors of the virus. After the pandemic hit, two of the three pie shops in Pie Town shuttered, leaving one sole pie shop the Gatherin Place the last pie shop in Pie Town.
Montana Chavez baked at home for fun prior to moving to Pie Town, but didnt realize that she would be carrying on a small-town tradition of doing just that: baking pie. A Phoenix, AZ native, depending on the day, Montana Chavez is the baker, shipper, cook, and front of house staff for the last pie shop in Pie Town: Pie Town Pies.

How 42 decaying president heads found a home in a Virginia field
From George Washington to George W Bush, each bust is 18-20 feet high, weigh between 11,000-20,000 pounds and sit in varying states of decay. The heads were moved to the field after the failure of President’s Park, an attraction that was intended for tourists to Williamsburg, but wasn’t met with much success. When the park failed, the busts were scheduled to be destroyed, but Howard Hankins couldn’t bear the thought, and offered to take the busts to his privately owned farm. But moving the busts proved difficult, the process broke noses off and put holes in the back of some of the heads. Abraham Lincoln’s bust has a hole in the back of his head and Ronald Reagan’s bust was struck by lightening. There was at one time a miniature head of Barack Obama, but it appears to have been stolen. The busts sit on private property that is not open to the public, but tours are offered occasionally. Photography tours are run by John Plashal. There are plans to remove the President’s heads to another location, potentially for another run at a museum. Those plans appear to be on hold as of 2020.
