Best Unconventional: Tesco Finest Crumble Topped Mince Pies With Salted Caramel & Festive Spice

If a classic mince pie isn’t what gets you excited about the festive season, these baked treats from Tesco Finest range are the best alternative in our opinion. They’re a luxe twist on the Christmas classic, combining fruity mincemeat with an indulgent salted caramel sauce. A touch on the sweet side , the real showstopping element is the buttery crumble topping. The pastry itself is delicious too.

Best Overall: Aldi Specially Selected All Butter Classic Minces Pies

Mr. Kipling

We think these festive treats are as close to mince pie perfection as it’s possible to get. The shortcrust pastry of these mince pies reminds of a really good shortbread biscuit, while the rich and fruity filling is perfectly spiced. The filling-to-pie ratio is also impeccable and the finish is beautiful to look at like something straight from a bakery display window. There’s the price to consider too, with these mince pies offering serious value for money. They are also available as a 12-pack of mini mince pies, but we preferred these.

So Where Can I Buy Mince Pies In Canada

The good news is that there are enough of us spreading the word about mince pies that local stores are beginning to see the light and stock them.

COBS Bread Bakery, with outlets across Canada, sells their own brand of mince tarts. They can sell out quickly, but if you call ahead they may be able to hold a box for you. Some Safeway, Freshco, Real Canadian Superstore, and No Frills outlets also sell them.

In Toronto, Agora Café on Dundas Street West is taking orders for their baked goods, including mince tarts.

There are also numerous stores stocking Irish and British goods, like the Celtic Treasure Chest in Vancouver, which have imported mince pies for the Christmas season.

Just remember that the key is to ask for mince tarts, not mince pies in Canada!

Best Filling: Asda Extra Special Luxury Sloe Gin Mince Pies

On the right side of boozy, the sloe gin perfectly complements the well-spiced, juicy filling. Sharp yet sweet, these mince pies have a great pastry-to-filling ratio and leave a satisfying aftertaste lingering on the palate. The pastry is pretty good as well it’s crisp and buttery yet allows the filling to take centre stage. This is a fantastic option for those who want to try something new this Christmas but aren’t ready to stray too far away from the classics.

Traditional Mincemeat Pie Recipe

Lets get started!

Make the pastry crust:

Form the dough into a ball, tightly wrap it in plastic wrap, and chill it in the fridge for at least 3 hours before using, or for up to 5 days. This dough can also be frozen .

Time to make the mincemeat pies!

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Grease the mini tart tins or a standard 12-cup muffin tin.

Roll 2/3 of the pie crust out onto a floured surface to 1/8 inch thickness. Cut circles out of the pie crust to fit into the tins. Scoop some of the mincemeat into each pie crust.

**IF MAKING A FULL SIZE PIE: Preheat to 375 F and bake it for 15 minutes, then reduce the heat to 350 F and bake for another 30 minutes or so.

Roll out the remaining pie crust to the same thickness and cut out circles for lids, star shapes, or lattices . If cutting out circles/lids to fully cover each pie cut a small slit on the top of each pie crust to let hot air escape.

Lightly brush the tops with milk or an egg wash.

Bake the pies for 10-15 minutes or until golden brown.

Carefully remove them from the muffin or tart tins, transfer them to a wire rack and sprinkle with powdered sugar.

Mince pies are best served gently warmed. They can be eaten with your hands or with a spoon if served with cream or even ice cream if you like.

Another traditional topping is Hard Sauce, known as Brandy Butter outside the U.S. Spread or place a dollop of brandy butter over the hot mincemeat pie and let it melt.

Enjoy!

Baking & Serving Tips

Make sure to get the most enjoyable and best experience out of our pies by following the baking instructions and serving tips below. These instructions are specific to Christmas Mince Pie. If you would like instructions for a different pie, please check that page.

Freshly Baked

If your Christmas Mince Pie is already baked, please store it in the fridge. For best results, the pie should be consumed within 4 days of purchase. Before serving please remove from fridge and leave at room temperature for 45 minutes. To warm, bring to room temperature for 45 minutes, and then place in preheated oven at 350°F. Warm a 9 pie for 20 minutes and a 5 for 10 minutes.

Frozen

If your Christmas Mince Pie is frozen, please store in the freezer until you are ready to bake and consume. For best results, the pie should be baked within 3 months of purchase. To bake, place pie on baking sheet and place in preheated oven at 350°F. Bake a 9 for 90-120 minutes and a 5 for 50-60 minutes.

Once baked, cool the Christmas Mince Pie for a minimum of 1 hour before serving. The bottom of the pie tin should remain warm to the touch. If it is served too hot, the pie’s consistency will be too runny.

If your pie has a crumble top, make sure the middle of the crumble doesnt appear wet or jiggly.

Tips

These were the best mincemeat tarts I’ve ever tasted! Really delicious, lots of fruit beautifully prepared — definitely something I’ll be ordering again whenever available!

Mince Pies Throughout History

For hundreds of years the delicious mince pie has been enjoyed as a tasty, warming and filling treat early on as a main dish, now most often to finish off a meal or to serve up as a treat. Warm, spicy mincemeat and the crisp pastry crust complement each other, and also go beautifully with a spoonful or two of whipped cream or a cold scoop of vanilla ice cream. But thats not always been the case.

The reason mincemeat is called meat is because thats exactly what it used to be: most often mutton, but also beef, rabbit, pork or game. Mince pies were first served in the early middle ages, and the pies were quite sizeable, filled with a mixture of finely minced meat, chopped up fruit and a preserving liquid. Mincemeat originally came about as a good way of preserving meat, without salting, curing, smoking or drying it.

In 1413, King Henry V served a mincemeat pie at his coronation. Henry the VII was fond of the meaty Christmas pie as a main dish, filled with minced meat and fruit. Mince pies have been known under several names over the years. Christmas pyes indicate their popularity at this time of year, shridpies refer to the shredded suet and meat, crib cakes which allude to baby Jesus in his crib, and wayfarers pies, as they were a traditional treat served to travelling visitors. They have been referred to as mince pies in literature by countless dignitaries and important historical figures.

History Of Mincemeat Pie:

How to Make Mince Pies – The Victorian Way

11th Century The Christmas pie came about at the time when the Crusaders were returning from the Holy Land. They brought home a variety of oriental spices. It was important to add three spices for the three gifts given to the Christ child by the Magi. In honor of the birth of the Savior, the mince pie was originally made in an oblong casings , with a place for the Christ Child to be placed on top. The baby was removed by the children and the manger was eaten in celebration. These pies were not very large, and it was thought lucky to eat one mince pie on each of the twelve days of Christmas .

Over the years, the pies grew smaller, the shape of the pie was gradually changed from oblong to round, and the meat content was gradually reduced until the pies were simply filled with a mixture of suet, spices and dried fruit, previously steeped in brandy. This filling was put into little pastry cases that were covered with pastry lids and then baked in an oven. Essentially, this is todays English mince pie.

1413 King Henry V of England served a mincemeat pie at his coronation in 1413. King Henry VIII liked his Christmas pie to be a main-dish pie filled with mincemeat.

1588 In the1588 Good Hous-Wiues Treasurie by Edward Allde, meats were still cut up to be eaten with a spoon and combined with fruits and heavy spices. Typical was his recipe for Minst Pye which used practically the same ingredientsthat go into a modern mince pie.
