Ground Beef , to which we add 4 Medium Potatoes and 1 Large Bag of Frozen Corn. As a variation, you can also add 1 Small Bag of Green Peas. Shepherds Pie with Ground Beef is a simple recipe and refreshing food, perfect for the cold season. The origin of this recipe is from Americas cuisine and is generally made with beef, lamb, or turkey. I tried it with Ground Beef and its excellent. If you do not want to prepare it with ground beef, try with lamb meat.

What Kind Of Veggies To Use

Heres what I love about this easy shepherds pie recipe- you can use any veggies you want! And its extra easy because you just buy a bag of frozen mixed veggies and dump it right in- NO DEFROSTING NEEDED! No chopping, no peeling ahh, life is good.

I almost always use a mixture of peas, carrots, and corn. You can also use green beans, soy beans, broccoli, sweet potato anything you want!

And you can also use fresh veggies if you want. If you do, I recommend giving them a quick sauté or steam to soften them up a bit before adding them to the shepherds pie. Frozen veggies come partially cooked, since theyre blanched before freezing.

    • Prepare Classic Beef Gravy.Classic Beef Gravy: Melt 1/4 cup butter in large nonstick skillet over medium heat until melted.       • Mash the yolks with the back of a fork until no large clumps remain.

      • Transfer the yolk mixture to a plastic food storage bag.
      • Squeeze and roll the bag around in your fingers until the yolk mixture is completely smooth.

        • Add dried parsley, dried thyme, dried rosemary, salt, and pepper.

        Technically, shepherds pie is made with lamb, and Irish in origin. A beef-based pie is a cottage pie, with British origin, since the Irish ate more lamb than the beef-loving Brits. But the distinctions have blurred over time, with shepherds pie being the most common name for both, especially in the States, so I call this beefy casserole shepherds pie, albeit incorrectly!

        This ground beef shepherds pie recipe uses a very well-known Cooks Illustrated recipe as its starting point. I love how they rake the mashed potatoes with a fork and throw the entire skillet under a broiler to give the potatoes a fabulous brown crust.

        That said, Cooks Illustrated recipes while doubtless technically close to perfect can have a way of being, well, a little fussy. A little too science lab for a weeknight meal, adding cornstarch to carbonara here, baking soda to raw meat there. This is not a bad thing, but sometimes I get a little into the weeds with their recipes.

        So like the good people at Cooks, I wondered if I could test my way to a better version for me, one that was streamlined, with simplified ingredients. And I did! By subbing a glug of red wine for Madeira , adjusting some flavors, and simplifying the ingredients, I came up with a recipe that everyone raves about.

        Grab a stockpot and place it on your stove. Add in the diced potatoes. “The potato chunks should be about 1-1.5 inch thick,” Shelbert shares. Cover the potatoes with water and turn the heat up to high. Once the water starts to boil and you see bubbles reaching the top of the surface, you can lower the heat to a rolling boil. Continue cooking the potatoes for about 15 minutes, until you can easily pierce them with a fork. Remove from the heat and strain the excess water through a colander.

        Once the shepherds pie is baked, cool completely and cover loosely with plastic wrap. Place it in the freezer until fairly firm, about two hours. Then, cover tightly with plastic wrap, followed by aluminum foil. Mark the date on the outside and store in the freezer for up to two months.

        When ready to serve, remove the foil and plastic wrap. Use the foil you just removed to loosely cover the pie. Make sure that your casserole dish can go straight from freezer to oven if not, set the casserole in the oven while the oven preheats so that the dish warms slowly.

        Bake the casserole for an hour, or until the pie is hot all the way through. Remove the foil for the last 15 minutes to allow the top to brown.
