They went with glass because its inexpensive and conducts heat gently and evenly. They also like that it allows you to check the doneness of the bottom of your pie. More specifically, they liked this OXO glass plate because its made of thick borosilicate glass , which means the dish can go from freezer to oven with a lower risk of breaking. Also: This plate is two inches deep and held more than most of the other glass ones they tested. Note: The OXO plate that Wirecutter picked actually does not come with a lid, but the lid-less option is currently sold out. And a lid is nice to have, anyway!

WHY WE LIKE IT: This pie plate comes with a heavy cast iron construction and relatively large 10 diameter. This is an excellent choice for people who want to bake for larger groups.

This cast iron pie plate is a total exercise in utility. It is very barebones with a mate black cast iron construction and small grooves along the inner rim for a better grip. Two decorative molded handles make it a breeze to take out of blistering hot ovens using a pair of oven mitts. Our only knock is that it weighs close to five pounds. However, that is not atypical with cast iron cookware.
Heat conduction and tolerance with this cast iron pie plate are exceptionally high. While testing, we easily created golden brown pies with obvious even heat distribution throughout, leaving no cold spots. All in all, we were very impressed with this pie plate for pies and quiches.

WHY WE LIKE IT: These pie plates are made of aluminum and come in a monstrous 50-pack, great for catering events, parties, and for people who do not enjoy cleaning after every use.
- Recommended to use parchment paper for stickiness
- Not microwave-safe
- Could use more depth
These lightweight 9 by 6.5 pie plates are made of disposable 9-inch aluminum, sturdy enough to hold its own with heavy foods. While testing, we observed no sagging or bending. Plus, large curl lips and small rim creases provide a good grip when removing baked goods out of the oven. Our only criticism is its lack of depth , so multiple pie plates may need to be used for larger gatherings.
In terms of aesthetics, these are not meant to impress anyone. Disposable aluminum is as dry as it gets, simply used to deliver baked goods from Point A to Point B with no-frills. Coming in a 50-pack, these can even be used for arts & crafts projects.

We had been debating whether to include all the different standard wide rim clear glass Pyrex pie plates on one page or not – I think that we will for now, because otherwise we would have 7 different pages with essentially identical information. However, we will be listing any significant variations on different pages.
Clear glass pie plates are one of the most recognizable items made by Pyrex, even today. According to the Pyrex book by Rogove and Steinhauer, the standard wide rim Pyrex Pie plate came about in 1915 or so and was the #201 8.5 inch in diameter. Later on in 1920, #205, 206, 207, 208, 209, 210, 211 wide rim pie plates were all introduced. Their sizes were 5-11 inches, respectively. In 1926, the 6, 7 inch ones were removed from production, and in 1938 the 5 inch plate was gone.
Well focus on these earlier 5-7 inch smaller size wide rim pie plates for the most part, since the others are much more common. Heres an example of a #205 5 inch pie plate .
When we first found this, we thought it might be an orphan from the famous Childrens Pyrexette Set because it was so small. Then, we thought perhaps it was a tart dish or some sort of early custard. Later, we found out it was definitely an earlier pie plate. As you can see below, it has the early double cent sign stamp.

Pyrex Easy Grab Pie Plate For Pies And Quiches

WHY WE LIKE IT: These pie plates have distinctive Easy Grab rims and are made of durable and non-porous tempered glass, which is great for people who want a firm grip when holding.

Our favorite feature with this pie plate is its tempered glass construction, which is really resilient. Its non-porous surface does an excellent job of not absorbing stains or odor. It is also microwave, preheated oven, and freezer safe with high heat tolerance, perfect for baking directly on. While testing, we were able to heat a pie for 40 minutes with temperatures at 350°F with no issues.
On the aesthetics side, these 9.5-inch pie plates clash between exquisite and clean. A heavily contoured Easy Grab rim makes it very easy to hold with enough clearance between the rim and base for gloved hands to rest comfortably underneath. Kudos for coming in a two-pack, which works great with most households.

Kitchns Pick for the Best Pie Plate
This is actually a hard one! Because we see the merits of glass, ceramic, and aluminum. Theyre all so different! And it does kind of depend on the pie youre making and what youre planning to do with it. For example, we love the Williams Sonoma option for a simple graham cracker or cookie crust. The OXO glass one is nice for fruit or custard-based pies. But if we had to pick just one, were actually going to diverge from everyone on this list and pick this ceramic Emile Henry dish .
First of all, its gorgeous, so its sure to elevate anything you make. We also like that its so fluted, taking the pressure of novice bakers who might be intimidated with crust work. It can also go straight from the freezer to the oven, which is handy if you tend to freeze your fruit pies before baking them. And it can go under broiler, which glass cant do.

What Pie Plate Brands Do You Recommend
Although they did not make our list, we really like the Emile Henry pie dish, the Le Creuset Heritage pie dish, and the Creo Smartglass Pie Plate. The Emile Henry has a distinctive rugged styling that works well with mini pies, known for its fun Burgundian clay composition and French roots. The Le Creuset pie dish features a durable, cast iron construction that works well with larger 9-inch pies and the Creo Smartglass is an all-around workhorse with an outer ceramic construction and durable tempered borosilicate glass interior.
Williams Sonoma Goldtouch Nonstick Pie Dish
The Best Pie Plate, According to Cooks Illustrated and EpicuriousThe testers at Cooks Illustrated didnt like glass as much as Wirecutter because it struggled with release issues when it came time to serve. Instead, they picked this metal dish, which is extremely thin so it heats quickly and evenly. They said it baked crusts perfectly without ever over-browning. They also liked its super simple lip, which meant they could do their own crust-crimping. And did note that the metal surface can cut or scratch when youre slicing up the pie, but that this was not a huge issue.
Testers at Epicurious came to the same conclusion as Cooks Illustrated. Their tests involved making a blueberry pie and a Key lime pie in each pan. This pan did the best in both tests, but did especially well with the berry pie, producing the most even results and crisp crust of all. They noted that the slices came out incredibly easily. They also noted the scratching issue but said the scratches didnt seem to have any negative effect on the utility of the dish. Note: Williams Sonoma recommends using wooden or silicone tools when serving.

This mini pie plate has a very elegant and useful design. A ridged rim and side tab handles make it easy to hold, even with a pair of oven mitts. A weighted has equal proportions and is easy to open and close.
